Maybe so... did I miss that the package had the wings on it?  Now that I think of it, maybe they were on the package and he saw the wings on the archway over the driveway and recognized them from the package... then again on the back of her truck.  But even so, why would she be sending anyone a satellite phone... a Christmas present?

I think not knowing the contents of the package was just fine no matter what...

Edit to Add... I thought it interesting that when she drove up, he was standing at a crossroads... actually the crossroads of his life... which direction to go... then she comes along and they talk and she gives him directions, and then drives away on the road leading to her house, and as she does so he sees the wings on the back of her truck... and he watches her head down the road... I wanted him to follow her.... but it leaves that up in the air so we don't know if he did.

I loved Castaway, just watched it again recently.  I think Martian came close but no cigar.  Btw, did you watch it 3D, I chose not to since I have to wear glasses to watch movies these days.

Today about noon I decided to go to the movies because "The Martian" was playing at the Bijou... an old theatre that has been in the center of town since the 1950's ...  they've redone the screen (was an original "silver" screen), and the seats.  And I wanted to see this movie on the large screen vs waiting for it to come out on DVD.  Some movies you just have to see on the big screen, and this certainly is one, to get the full impact of the special effects.

I found it very entertaining, and Matt Damon did an excellent job, along with other cast members.

(We also have a modern multi-screen threatre which I prefer, but usually when the Bijou carries a film, it's not shown at the multi- ).

Hi GG.

I am a sucker for space stuff even though most are garbage. So I was at a stoplight on Sandy Blvd today near an old theater here in Portland, I think they call it the Roselawn. Anyway I saw the title on the billboard, looked a little closer. Boy is that Matt Damon up there? Could this one be decent? Anyway...thanks for the tip. I'm looking forward to it.

My wife is a silent movie buff and has been to the Bijou in LC. I never have. You make me want to come down for the weekend! Alas, we have obligations.

God Bless.

Michael Medved gave The Martian four stars, which is unusual for him. I think he said to be sure to see it in 3D. I think that is what I will do tonight. I was wondering what to do on a Friday night.

You will love it, I bet a lot of stuff went over my head but won't for you. :)

Still haven't gone.  I almost went, but the screentimes didn't work out right.  Later.

Watched the Cokeville Miracle finally.  Not a bad flick.  Interesting story.  I'm curious to know how closely it adhered to the facts.

Pretty spot on according to what the real people say.

Saw The Martian. It was very good.

That does it. I'm going tomorrow. I'm on vacation, and I might as well do something fun.

I rented a movie titled "The Age of Adaline"... and interesting film... starring Blake Lively in the story of Adaline, a 29 year-old woman who survived a car accident where she went off a bridge into icy water, and lightning strikes the car.  The lightening strike does something to her cells/DNA and from that time forward she never grows older physically.  She guards her secret through the eight decades that follow... the film takes us through the 1920's until today and is a visual feast of fashion and architecture, technology, automobiles and so on...Woven throughout is a love story that forces her to face her destiny and the timeless power of love...

I enjoyed the film...

I want to see it.  Good to know it's worth the effort.

Captain Phillips.

The scene where captain Phillips/Tom Hanks is being tended to medically on board the rescue ship really stuck with me. Both the actor's portrayal of the shock, relief, etc. and the repeated reassurance by medical staff that he was safe now. I think it was well done and something I could personally strongly relate to. Sat there on my couch crying like a dork. We're talking serious "ugly cry" here. Probably a good thing I never saw in in the theater.

Now I need to see if there was a book written about it.

I loved the movie...

and I think there is a book or maybe not... there was a small controversy among some crew members when the film came out about the way Phillips was portrayed, i.e., that he was not as heroic and actually placed the crew in some unneeded danger... something along those lines... I can't remember now, but some crew took issue with the portrayal.

But no matter what, he and the crew survived a terrible event.

What struck me was the beginning of the film and the Somali village... the people living in hovels under terrible conditions... not a tree or shrub or flower... the young boys running to hide so they wouldn't be hauled off... I see such environments in the news... after seeing the film I felt so blessed not to have to face that situation every day...

On the DVD, it has "special features" where the fellows who played the pirates were interviewed and they were all from a group of Somalis living in I think Minnesotra (or Wisconsin)... and the one playing their leader, Muse, told of how his parents "won the lottery" to come to the U.S. as refugees and so he was brought to the U.S. at about age 14 where he was educated and grew up in the security with what he said were opportunities that other Somalis can't imagine...

Anyway, it is one of my favorite films..

The controversy:

http://nypost.com/2013/10/13/crew-members-deny-captain-phillips-heroism/

http://www.historyvshollywood.com/reelfaces/captain-phillips.php

"Not all of the crew cooperated with the movie, and those who did were paid as little as $5,000 for their life rights by Sony and made to sign nondisclosure agreements — meaning they can never speak publicly about what really happened on that ship"

Can see why they are mad. $5000 bucks when the movie made $175 million after expenses and who knows what Phillips got for the book and they cannot make another dime by writing their stories or giving interviews, pictures.

Given the involvement of Hanks and the usual success of real life hero films, at least they could have arranged bonuses if the film made over so much.

Watched The Intern tonight. Liked it for the most part. It was better than the trailer I saw.

I actually like the trailer for it, but believed the movie wouldn't live up to it.  So maybe I should go see it.

You have to see the Martian first.
