Enjoyed the movie, the shots of the landscape and the horses going straight downhill stay in my mind, besides the music of course. It was certainly a very good blend of a love story mixed with an action movie and it was well done.
strappinglad Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 Last night I re-watched " Men in Black " There is a scene in it where the 'J' character asks the 'K' character why they don't just tell the public about all the aliens on earth because ' people are smart' . The 'K' character replies that ,Yes, a person is smart but people are dumb and panic-y and irrational. For some reason, this resonated with me, maybe because of recent events. Anyway, a fun movie still.
Garden Girl Posted November 10, 2015 Posted November 10, 2015 This evening on one of the Encore channels they played a movie I love... from 1952!! "The Greatest Show On Earth" starring Charlton Heston, Betty Hutton, Cornel Wilde and Jimmy Stewart... all about Ringling Brothers, Barnum & Bailey Circus.I was 11 years old, and Betty Hutton starred as "Holly", a trapeze artist... in fact she did most of her aerial stunts herself.... after seeing the movie, I wanted to be a trapeze high flyer. In the movie they show the work it takes to set up the big top tents when the circus comes to town, how many workers it takes... how the animals are handled... all the costumes and equipment... the number of performers, what it takes to transport everything, etc etc. Really interesting.But then a few months later, our family went to the Pasadena Winter Gardens to see an "Ice Capades" Show... after that I wanted to be an ice skater... When I was a student at BYU, I took the train home from Provo to So Cal... during the night I woke up and we were passing another train... so close... I could read the writing on the cars... Ringling Bros, Barnum & Bailey Circus... it reminded me of the movie... GG

I'm in the "watch rated R movies if it teaches something vital about humanity rather than seeks to entertain through mindless gore and sex" camp. The movie is about a child in Africa whose family is separated, and all the male members killed, after which he is conscripted into a warlord's army. He's subjected to drug use, physical and sexual abuse, and all the horrors of war. It's not a pleasant movie to watch, but the acting is on point and it caused me to reflect on a number of issues like agency, redemption, the atonement, politics, etc.
Garden Girl Posted November 13, 2015 Posted November 13, 2015 I watched "San Andreas" starring The Rock and it was good, but I think the destruction was overdone.... of course the quakes were in a "swarm" and in the 9.0+ range... so 9's could have caused such damage I suppose...it just seemed like a little much with tall skyscrapers simply falling over, etc. Soon the destruction lost its impact. I grew up living in So Cal right on the San Andreas fault and it was always a fear when we'd get a quake... like, Is this going to be the "Big One?" The "big one" for So Cal is still predicted for the future. GG

This reminds me of the event some years back where a person bought a new motorhome and while driving it on the freeway, put it in cruise and walked back to the kitchen to make a sandwich. Chaos ensued . For most action movies ,it is best to forget any knowledge one has of physics. 2
