But if you look at the talent, to me it's undeniable. I read the other day his son has addiction problems. Poor guy. I'm sure it's not easy living with such a famous father. At least he's a good husband, not unfaithful like a lot of actors can be. Of course I use to say that about Mel Gibson. I sure liked him in this latest movie though, I can't think of a movie except for a couple that I didn't love. Turner and Hooch...I think that's the name, didn't care for and a few others.

I was thinking about ERayR's opinion about Hanks' acting being "mediocre" (and I don't agree either) and thought perhaps it was because he's played so many light/romantic comedy roles... but then you mentioned Philadelphia... what a performance... in fact I think he won the Oscar for his portrayal of a man dying of AIDS who had been fired by the law firm he worked for... and his subsequent lawsuit against them... Denzel Washington gave a very good performance as his attorney... and Antonio Bandares was his partner... Joanne Woodward was his mother. It is an excellent film.I loved "Sleepless in Seattle" and "You've Got Mail." These are the types of romantic comedy films we see him in most often... but then comes along a film like Philadelphia and it is obvious his range as an actor is very, very good... GG

I also like "Catch Me if You Can" that's a true story also. And of course love his romantic films. Just love how he can play the different rolls much like Robin Willams did. When it comes to a sci fi movie, I am always on the lookout for bad science and I found none. I haven't read the novel, but if a screwup were going to come it would have come in the translation from book to movie. But it appears that Hollyweird actually got something right for once. I'm sure if I read the book I will find that they left out something important, but the movie seems to stand alone without any problem. I like that. 1

I am afraid of heights, so I knew going in that this would make me uncomfortable, but when it got to the point of the WTC walk, I had no fear and it was a beautifully transcendent spiritual moment, unlike anything I've experienced in a film. And the connections with pressing forward with faith, following the straight and narrow, enduring to the end, etc., are all there, but not overt or pedantic. I've heard some reviews praising the wire walk but saying the rest of the film is weak, but I disagree... It's all very well done and builds up nicely to that moment.The Martian is also great, with a positive attitude of endurance and using our ingenuity to solve problems. It starts out with a girl that lost her faith since being raped.. she felt like she was a broken person. I wasn't raped but understand what she means when she said she felt broken and not loved since losing her faith.

Despite all the raves I thought "Forrest Gump was so so. Some of the philosophical take away lines are pretty good. I liked "The Green Mile". The last role I saw Val Kilmer in was a film called "De je Vu" starring Denzel Washington. Val played an FBI man, like DW, searching for an insane "bomber" ... one of the few movies involving "time" that I really liked. It was actually pretty believable...Val's role was rather minor, and it was obvious he was no longer the handsome fellow he used to be. GG

What I like is that he makes his characters believable and his ability to do a wide range of roles.
