DODGERS RE-INVITE ANTI-CATHOLIC DRAG GROUP TO PRIDE NIGHT, ISSUE APOLOGY TO LGBTQ+ COMMUNITY DESPITE LETTER FROM MARCO RUBIO

Quote

After “much thoughtful feedback from Los Angeles’ diverse communities” the Dodgers have decided to re-invite the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to its 10th annual LGBTQ+ Pride Night. They also issued an apology to the drag group, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and their friends and families.

FwxNrq8XwAEcPsA?format=jpg&name=small

The decision to reincorporate the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence comes less than seven days after the team chose to remove the group from the event. Los Angeles was initially set to give the group an award as part of its Pride Night celebration.

The “Sisters” of Perpetual Indulgence use “go and sin some more” as their motto, and frequently dress as Jesus, Mary and other religious figures. Members also hold pub crawls that mock the Stations of the Cross, and even the Eucharist.

Hmm.  I had understood that the Dodgers have a pretty sizeable Hispanic fan base, many of whom are presumably Catholic.  I wonder how this will play.

Quote

Senator Marco Rubio helped bring light to the group’s actions by issuing a letter to MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred. In the letter, he questioned the double standard in how Major League Baseball is seeking to promote inclusivity and be as “welcoming to everyone as possible.”

That's a fair point.  I suspect Catholics will not feel welcomed at this event.

Quote

Are the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence inclusive and welcoming to Christians? Rubio thinks not.

The Dodgers then decided to remove the award in what seemed like a direct response to the letter.

Not long after Los Angeles made its decision, LA Pride announced that it would not be participating in the team’s Pride Night. It did so because the team revoked the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s award.
...
This week, on Monday, the Dodgers re-invited the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. They also issued an apology.

From Twitter:

You will have your faith profaned and mocked in front of thousands and you’ll be called a bigot if you object.

Yep.

In fact, it will probably happen in this thread.  And I'm not even Catholic.  I will, nevertheless, voice my support for them.

Thanks,

-Smac

They presumably checked their notes and realized that Marco Rubio is a senator from Florida and not California. They then looked quickly to figure out what Florida was up to, were horrified, and then quickly reversed the decision. If Florida Man SenatorMan is for it then it is undoubtedly terrible advice.

Any outrage on how the Catholic Church has mocked the LGBT community?  Any outrage on how the right wing has vilified drag queens?

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence has been ministering to the LGBT community for the past 43 years and started out to help those suffering with AIDS when there was noting but condemnation coming from the Catholic Church or any other church for that matter.  They have raised over a million dollars to help those who needed help when no one else was willing to step in.  They found how to serve God in their own way and really don't care whether you or others condemn them for the work they do.  From their response to the Dodger management.  From their response to Dodger management

Quote

Brian Burch, president of CatholicVote, condemned the Sisters as a "Blatantly perverted, sexual and disgusting anti-Catholic hate-group". This is simply not true.  The Sisters began in 1979 in response to the AIDS crisis, when gay men, who their faiths and families had abandoned because of their orientation, were sick and dying.  The Sisters were among the first to raise money to help care for people with AIDS and to create and distribute safer-sex information.

"Our ministry is real.  We promulgate universal joy, expiate stigmatic guilt, and our use of religious trappings is a response to those faiths whose members would condemn us and seek to strip away the rights of marginalized communities" said Sister Rosie Partridge, abbess of the San Francisco Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.

The Sisters are not anti-Catholic, but and organization based on love, acceptance, and celebrating human diversity.  To be condemned by representatives of the Catholic Church is particularly ironic, given that organizations's long history of condoning and concealing the sexual abuse of children.

This small group of less than 1,000 people have raised over a million dollars to minister to those suffering and in need of care.  If the Church provided that kind of care to the poor, it wouldn't have a 100 billion dollar stock portfolio.  It would be following the example of the Savior.

So start yet one more thread to stir up outrage against the LGBT community and lets see how much you can gin up anger against them.  As far as I am concerned, the Church could learn a few things from this group of misfits.  Maybe Dodger managements were willing to look a little deeper than the loud roar of the religious right to see that there is more to them then just being outrageous drag queens.

I'm in LA and it is a huge story here; they dress in drag with overdone makeup and sexualized spoofs of nun's garments/ habits to ridicule them in a way to me borders on blasphemy, imo.

In passing, as a note, nuns do not wear habits anymore, (for those unaware)  but those habits very much functioned for their vows and covenants, as our garments do for us. It's like ridiculing ANY religious garb; garments as Sikhs wear, Orthodox Jews, Moslems etc.  It makes no sense- it certainly does not create good feelings with the groups being ridiculed- I cannot imagine what they are trying to achieve, because imo all it does is alienate people.

The Dodgers have now reversed their "dis-invitation", and are now re-inviting them to their pride celebration.

It's interesting to compare this to the musical the "Book of Mormon" which I think is still playing- and will be here in LA soon again, as it has several times before.

And yet any statement considered "homophobic" is attacked with venom.

I have no clue what this group is attempting- if it's winning approval for their cause, imo they are headed 180° in the wrong direction.

But they might make some Catholics feel bad or uneasy so who can really say if they are good or evil?

Ridiculing people's religion is not a way to earn their love.  I'm out.

I have queer people in my family, I appreciate what they go through, and love them dearly. I get it.

But this group is going in the wrong direction and is hurting their cause more than helping it.  It simply makes no sense and sets back their alleged " ministry", and does not foster love.

Their ministry was and is a huge success.

This controversy probably has the dollars rolling in. They should thank Senator Rubio for the free publicity.

Yeah well Church leaders accused Christ of blasphemy and hated Him as well because He didn't do things the way they wanted him to do it either.  The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence are loved by those they serve and take care of way more than the Catholic leaders wearing their dresses.  Many would say that Church does not foster love either in the LGBT community.

That's not the objection or criticism here.

From Wikipedia: "{B}etween 1979 and 2007 the Sisters are credited with raising over $1 million for various causes, or almost $40,000 on average per year."

Nobody is doing condemning their purported service to the LGBT community.

Rather, I think the criticism centers on this stuff: "The 'Sisters' of Perpetual Indulgence use 'go and sin some more' as their motto, and frequently dress as Jesus, Mary and other religious figures. Members also hold pub crawls that mock the Stations of the Cross, and even the Eucharist."

Easter Sunday is a high holy day for the Sisters, but their celebration, which includes a "Hunky Jesus Contest" in Dolores Park, has been called blasphemous by some Catholics. In 1999, the Archdiocese argued unsuccessfully that the Sisters should move their 20th anniversary party to a different day.

From Wikipedia:

Religious parodies[edit]

Once founded in 1979, Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence attracted local attention by attending major LGBT events in the Castro District, with the members of the organization wearing outfits of Catholic nuns.[41] Both local LGBT as well as Catholic newspapers and journals expressed confusion at "clearly male nuns, one in makeup holding a toy gun, strolling through the city".[54] The first collusion with the Catholic community took place in 1982, when the Sisters attended a Mass at Cathedral of Saint Mary. When interviewed by a local LGBT newspaper Bay Area Reporter, the Sisters stated that they did not mean to spark controversy. Nevertheless, a local Catholic newspaper The Monitor expressed concern that the group was degrading towards Catholic nuns, as the members of the organization had aliases such as "Sister Hysterectoria" and "Sister Boom Boom".[41]

"Sister Hysterectoria."

"Sister Boom Boom."

Quote

Starting in 1995, the Sisters began a Castro Crawl on Easter Sunday to celebrate their anniversary. The event features a 13-stop pub crawl that parodies Stations of the Cross. At each station in front of a gay bar or similarly affiliated organization, the Sisters call out "We adore thee, O Christ" to be answered by their traveling audience in "Luvya, mean it, let's do brunch". Actors portray the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and other people integral to Easter traditions, and the Sisters continue to educate for safer sex by passing out condoms, ending the event with a toast of vanilla wafers and Jägermeister.[53]

A pub crawl parodying the Stations of the Cross.

Mocking the Catholic Eucharist with vanilla wavers and Jägermeister.

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence often parody sacred religious rituals in an offensive manner.  Examples include their “Our Bother” prayer and their “Condom Savior Communion,” which makes fun of the Catholic Mass while distributing something of which the Church strongly disapproves. Additionally, they sexualize religious figures with their annual “Hunky Jesus” and “Foxy Mary” contests. A slogan at the bottom of the Sisters’ webpage reads, “Go forth and sin some more,” the very opposite of what Christianity endorses.

As a practicing Catholic, I find the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence’s parody upsetting. In the interest of the freedom of speech, I maintain the right of this order to exist, but having the right to do something is not the same thing as being right in doing so.

And here:

Quote

In 2017, Westcott House in Cambridge, U.K. chose to celebrate LGBT history month. While the Church of England had allowed for services to take place to commemorate LGBT history, a minister at Westcott house overstepped the invitation by conducting an evening service entirely in Polaris-a form of Queer slang-based on a translation of the Bible written by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence. Some members of the church found the service highly objectionable, such as a part where the traditional “Glory be to the father, and to the son, and the Holy Spirit” was translated as “Fabeness be to the Auntie, and to the Homie Chavvie, and to the Fantabulosa Fairy.”

For those who have the stomach for it (and NSFW), here is a video of the "Hunky Jesus" contest, which heavily sexualizes Jesus Christ.

Not much of a need to describe what SPI folks are doing.  Just go and read their stuff and watch the videos of their performances.  This is a "res ipsa loquitur" kind of thing.

I've never been overly fond of SPI outside their actual community work. On several occasions, certain UCC churches have endorsed "hunky Jesus" contests at gay bars here in Phoenix on Easter Sunday. The mockery of what is sacred is absolutely reprehensible. However, the immoral and sanctimonious attitudes of those seeking to cancel drag is also telling. It is a lose/lose situation. I am forever grateful that the US is not founded on any Abrahamic religion and that it is no better a land in God's eyes than any other land.

You want documentation that the Catholic Church has chucked stones at the LGBT community? Perhaps you would also like documentation that water is wet to go with it?

This is not going to light any fires. This whole drama is largely ignored outside of MAGA media and some LGBT media.

Seriously?

Put on blackface and act out traditional racist ridicule of Black folks and see who thinks it is a good idea for your ministry.

Take on the Asian people and the Jews at the same time while you are at it.  Do a little street theater by going to the next general conference with garments outside a black leotard, just for emphasis.

Wear yarmulkes and Orthodox garb to make it even better :)

Who's to say if that is good or evil?

Certainly it will help whatever your cause is, right?

After all, that is what those MAGA folks do, right? All that racist theater surely is why their party seems to be coming back in the House.

But no politics....

The Anaheim Angels used to host an anti-LGBTQ group every year at their stadium, even having one their leaders throw the ceremonial first pitch. This group expended significant resources to ensure that homosexual relationships would never be legally recognized. They mocked and profaned homosexual relationships by reducing them to their manner of sexual intercourse and ignoring the joy and happiness that the individuals found in their loving relationships. The invitation to this anti-LGBTQ group made me question “the double standard in how Major League Baseball is seeking to promote inclusivity and be as ‘welcoming to everyone as possible.’”

Oh, I'm not huge on outrage, but I can use my voice (fingers) to speak out about people (and groups) vilifying other people (and other groups).   My whole life I've seen people vilify, mock, scorn, make fun of, demonize, and sarcastically parody folks with the intent of boosting one signal by diminishing another signal.  I am not a fan.  I don't care who is doing it, I'm not for it.  I am a right winger, and I am standing here typing right now, that I am against such tactics when the right wing uses them.

There.  That's one.  I'm speaking in favor of cleaning up my own back yard.  Will you now join with me and speak similar words on the subject of the vilifying/mocking/scorning/making fun of/demonizing/sarcastically parodying being done by the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence?  Or is it ok when your side does it...

In general, I say phooey on the silly notion that 'speech is violence'.   But let's have a hypocrisy check here too.  Hey @california boy, any outrage about the endless acab/kill cops graffiti seen all through the protests and riots of 2020-'21?  Any outrage on how the left wing has vilified cops?  Have you ever spoken out against anyone on the left for ginning up anger against the right?  Could antifa learn a few things from folks who support cops?  Maybe you and yours might be willing to look a little deeper than the loud roar of the anti-rule-of-law left to see that there is more to the thin blue line than just being zealous protectors of society.

The difference between mocking an actual organization that was actively oppressing you and just punching down at random minorities?

Also this was a political thread starting with the OP. Smac knew exactly what would happen when he started this thread.
