nuclearfuels Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 Are there any stake callings other than high councilman that a foreign-language ward might need? It's a ward that doesn't ask for help even when they need it. Not asking for a friend. Asking for myself. Thanks all!
bsjkki Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 I’m not exactly sure what your asking but... When I was in a foreign language branch, we needed additional leadership so some people were ‘called’ to attend the branch. It really helped. 2

I see that Ginger Snap mentioned Elders Quorum President, and actually the entire EQ Presidency are called by the stake. So are: Ward Clerk (and Assistant Clerks), and Executive Secretary. All of these may be, and usually are, suggested by the bishop, but the stake presidency makes the decision. EQP must be called and set apart by the SP. Clerks and Exec Sec are called and set apart by Stake Presidency or High Councilors. If there are any problems in any of these callings, the stake leadership should be being proactive in dealing with them. What bsjkki said. 4

I'm so surprised at this... do we as a ward sustain these individuals? I don't recall ever sustaining a ward clerk, etc., other than our own... GG 2

The Stake President gave the high councilor assigned to the ward I lived in at the time, along with my parents, the assignment to call "Brother Gourdin" as Executive Secretary to the Bishop. Dutifully, the high councilor sought out Brother Gourdin (the elder) and issued the call, then was told, "No, not that 'Brother Gourdin,' the other one." I all but told the high councilor, "No, no: I know the Stake President thinks you made a mistake, but believe me, you had it right the first time." Hopefully I didn't drive too many people out of the Church, or drive too many bishops (I served under two) crazy. Edited September 22, 2019 by Kenngo1969 3

GG Ward clerk and exec sec have always been sustained at the ward level in sacrament meeting, and presented by a HC member usually. Previously, EQ presidency (along with HP group leaders) were sustained only in their quorums (same for Aaronic priesthood quorum presidencies and YW class presidencies). I am not sure if this has changed. All stake callings are sustained in sacrament meeting in all wards and branches in the stake. 3

If you can get a hold of the Church Handbook #2 it has a "Chart of Callings" in section 19.7 which shows the Office, Recommended by, Approved by, Sustained by, and Called and Set Apart by columns. Can't think of any other stake callings a foreign ward might specifically need, other than what has already been mentioned. You need to define what kind of "help" you are talking about. Edited September 22, 2019 by JAHS Handbook 1 has section 9.1.5 for Nonnative Language Wards and Branches 3
The Nehor Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 (edited) If you are asking if there are other callings the Stake might need the only kinds of callings where the Stake sometimes requests a representative from every ward are things like YSA and SA reps. The Stake may need other callings filled but if they want someone from your ward for them they will contact the Bishopric and notify them. Edited September 22, 2019 by The Nehor 2
rpn Posted September 22, 2019 Posted September 22, 2019 It isn't uncommon for a Stake to call language speaking families to attend a specific congregation that needs help, even without calling them to specific callings that are done by the branch pres or bishop there. 4

ERMD Posted September 23, 2019 Posted September 23, 2019 I still don't understand the original question. 2
Calm Posted September 23, 2019 Posted September 23, 2019 (edited) Maybe this is the issue: Quote It's a ward that doesn't ask for help even when they need it. If people in the ward don't ask for help, the only way they may get it is from someone outside the ward asking for them...which would work better if the ward was in their stewardship, a stake calling that would interact with ward members? Hopefully nuclear will clarify. Edited September 23, 2019 by Calm 1

Hopefully nuclear will clarify. Maybe a Stake Fam Hist consultant who knows the ethnicity. Or someone in the ward. But the stake could help or train. Employment specialists, self reliance, or "just serve" folks. Service missionaries, or senior missionaries from the Mission. 1

It's a ward that doesn't ask for help even when they need it. Not asking for a friend. Asking for myself. Thanks all! If it's a full-on ward, rather than a branch, then the only stake callings that will be necessary are the usual ones as others have mentioned (e.g., Executive Secretary, Ward and Assistant Clerks, EQ Presidency, etc.). Individuals in the ward may require training from the stake to fulfill their various callings. For example, in a foreign language ward, it may be necessary to have the Stake Technology Specialist train a couple of people in the ward on how to use the translation equipment. But that's really just local unit training - not an additional stake calling. Now, as others have also mentioned, sometimes the Stake President will have members attend a foreign language unit in order to help provide additional support or to fulfill a need. Depending on how that is handled, one might consider such an assignment as a 'stake calling.' A common one around here would be a pianist for one of the Spanish Branches. I've seen Stake Presidents have a bi-lingual family with a pianist have their records moved into the Branch, and then the individual was called as the pianist by the Branch President. But I've also seen someone who wanted to keep attending their own ward, but who would happily attend the branch as well solely to play the piano, and that ended up being a stake assignment rather than a branch/ward calling. There's a bit of flexibility when it comes to things like that though, so it's not really a big deal. 2
