Popular Post MustardSeed Posted March 24, 2019 Popular Post Posted March 24, 2019 I have been incorrect and want to be sure to correct myself. In the thread referring to April Conference, I pointed out inconsistencies in the word of wisdom. I also insinuated that LDS women have a lot of plastic surgery. Turns out lds women, according to this research, have the same amount as the national average. https://archive.sltrib.com/article.php?id=5086948&itype=CMSID So I was wrong-. My apologies. I know how important facts are here. The only piece I’ll be stubborn about is the inconsistency in the message. 5

Where are you seeing inconsistency? The Church has always taught that our bodies are Temples, and most Temples get a structural refurbishment every few decades. 5

cinepro Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 Just now, MustardSeed said: Lol ok And the article you cite says LDS have less plastic surgery, not the same amount: Quote "Among Mormon women, it's even lower than for women nationally," she says her survey found. "Moreover, Utah Mormons' rate of cosmetic surgery isn't outsized at all. Among all Utah Mormons, 3.7 percent have had plastic surgery, slightly less than the 4 percent national average for all Americans. For Utah women, it's 5.6 percent. That's also a little less than the national average for women, which is 7 percent." 2
Bernard Gui Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 Thanks for the correction. We all should be slower in our rush to judge others. 1

SeekingUnderstanding Posted March 24, 2019 Posted March 24, 2019 (edited) I’m not sure what the big deal is given that most people don’t blink an eye at the idea of cosmetic orthodontics (the vast majority of people with braces), teeth whitening, ear piercing, hair coloring, and foreskin removal. The Church has always taught that our bodies are Temples, and most Temples get a structural refurbishment every few decades. Some of what we are talking about isn't a refurbishment, it is an upgrade. So to take your temple analogy a bit further, it is like taking the old sagging but functional W30xAA beams and upgrading them to W36xCC beams. The old beams worked jut fine but the new beams really stand out. 😉 3

Robert F. Smith Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 South Korea is the plastic surgery capital of the world. Plus the Trib going against this is more credible as it's an argument against interest so to speak. 1

MustardSeed Posted March 25, 2019 Author Posted March 25, 2019 I wonder why so many articles mention all the billboards of plastic surgery in Utah while people here living in Utah claim to not have seen them?
Calm Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 They may be located in areas we do not drive around. I generally stick around Orem down to Spanish Fork. Occasionally up to UoU mental health clinic. With caring for Mom and a busted tailbone, I also avoid driving as much as possible. I think I have seen one or two around SL but usually thinking about serious stuff so besides the roads and cars oblivious. 2

Don’t know if you are referring to me, but I wrote only in reference to billboards about vaginal enhancement (or whatever it’s called) not about plastic surgery in general. Somebody said there was one in Davis County, and somebody else narrowed it down to Layton. In my routine driving on I-15, I seldom get north of Bountiful. Of course, it’s possible I passed it without noticing. Plastic surgery doesn’t interest me, so I might not notice a sign unless I were looking for it.
Rain Posted March 25, 2019 Posted March 25, 2019 3 hours ago, MustardSeed said: I wonder why so many articles mention all the billboards of plastic surgery in Utah while people here living in Utah claim to not have seen them? Years ago I heard about them while living there. I moved 5 years ago from there. I started actively looking for them while I was on the freeway. It was odd to me that there was so much talk about the when I never saw one trying to see one. I did see a whole lot of alcohol ads. So like others have said I really think it is going to depend on where you are traveling in Utah.

Plus the Trib going against this is more credible as it's an argument against interest so to speak. It actually does cite data. It sites this study, for example, which says in part- "Utah has the nation’s sixth-highest number of plastic surgeons per capita. Some suggest that many graduates of the University of Utah’s top-ranked plastic surgery resi- dency program stay in Utah because of the market.25Statistics are collected by region, so there are no Utah- specific plastic surgery data. In fact, one recent survey that seems to contradict other studies and indicators found that Mormon women in Utah self-reported having cosmetic surgery at rates slightly lower than the national average.26 However, other data suggest cosmetic surgery is indeed a major consideration for many Utah women. For example, Utah is in the Mountain/Pacific region, which has the nation’s highest rates of cosmetic procedures, and the most popular procedure in the region is breast augmentation.27 RealSelf.com reported that Utah topped its list on searches for breast augmentation (53% above the national average),28 and the most common Google search for plastic surgery in Utah was “breast implants.”29A qualitative research study on Mormon women in Utah showed that breast augmentations are sometimes given to young women at high school graduation.30 National research shows that “Mommy Makeovers” (breast augmentation, tummy tuck, and liposuction) and other procedures are given to women as holiday presents."31 "Though it is difficult to pinpoint why cosmetic surgery levels are high in Utah, demographic information gives some clues. Researchers have found that homogenous societies, such as Utah, can have a contagion effect that pressures individuals into cosmetic surgery.40 In Utah, 87.6% of the population identifies as white,41 and Utah tops all the states in having the highest population of one religion: 57% are Mormon.42 These factors may be linked to high plastic surgery rates. The American Society for Plastic Surgeons reports that 69% of people who undergo plastic surgery are white.43 The Mormon Church strongly emphasizes marriage and motherhood, and Utah leads the nation in several categories relating to marriage and maternity: the highest percentage of its population being married44 and the earliest median age for marriage (24.0 for women and 26.2 for men).45 Utah has the highest fertility rate46 and stands among the highest in breast- feeding rates.47 Perhaps it is no surprise that, according to one researcher, 48 many Utah mothers respond to cultural pressure to undergo the Mommy Makeover, which local doctors advertise as a solution to young mothers’ bodies “trashed” by motherhood. Additionally, despite having the largest average household size in the nation,49 Utah has some of the fastest-growing incomes in the country,50leaving families with more discretionary income than ever before." Here is the data used in that study: 1 Namie, J. (2013). ‘In the world, but not of the world’: The paradox of plastic surgery among Latter-day Saint women in Utah.
