I am loving Elder Oaks's talk, but I keep hearing bits that I predict the discontented are going to attack. Viciously.

I guess I can read it later, but anything specific for the people who are at work?

Gender is eternal.

Male + female marriage.

I am hearing the same things right now.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see the importance of child bearing being emphasized in the years to come. It seems to be a growing issue among people my age.

So what?

Best single talk I have ever heard in my life. Absolutely fabulous.

Other than the definition of marriage, what practical meaning does the doctrine of gender difference have?

Paul taught that women should not teach in church. We’ve rejected that. Women used to be excluded from missionary service and prayers in general conference. We’ve dropped those practices. And it’s been decades since the church told women to leave the workforce.

So while I’m certain Elder Oaks feels strongly about this principle, I’m really struggling to understand what it means in practice.  Seriously, from official doctrinal sources, can anyone explain what the gender differences are?  I’d like to know, since apparently I’m supposed to tel my girls how they are different from their brothers.

It could be that Elder Oaks was emphasizing the gender issue due to society's changing beliefs about transgenderism.

I loved how he brought up that real learning must take place by study and by faith.  If we leave the 'by faith' part off then our learning and understanding will always be incomplete.

I fell asleep somewhere slightly before his talk and woke up near the end of it. So considering it was at least somewhat about increasing your family and my inability to stay awake these days are pregnancy induced, I figure I was just living parts of his talk :P

The only line I heard was him saying that our beliefs about the value of mortal life will continue to have us opposed to abortion and euthanasia. Weird line to wake up to. But even though I lean toward allowing abortion in society to an extent, I don't necessarily disagree with the line. Follwed by opposing gender bending or something (started to fade again).

With luv,

There is always one talk that gets attacked every conference

Might as well get it out of the way in the first session.

He's doubling or tripling down on male/female marriage and having children.  And attributing opposition to it to Satan.

I'm loving it!  I can predict the firestorm of criticism that is going to erupt on this topic any minute now...

Six, five, four, three, two, ONE!  ERUPT!!

Is it your turn to pop the popcorn or is it my turn this time?

Yeah, what's up with that?  Aren't men and women the same?

Are you serious?  This is the first you've heard about gender differences?  How could you have even had children if there were any doubt?

Im not talking about physical differences and how babies are made. I’m asking what  behavioral differences I should teach my kids? Until the combined FP/Q12  is ready to give specifics, we’re just spitting in the wind.

In a salvation sense men and women are the same. Salvation comes from becoming like Christ; taking his image on us. That image has nothing to do with height, weight, skin color, spoken language, body organs or any other outward differences between people. If it did, we would need a black savior, short savior, Hindi- speaking savior, female savior, and so forth.  From a salvation view, the only characteristics that matter are those available to all people. So gender may be eternal in the sense that skin color may be eternal, but it has no bearing on salvation.  It’s just a beautiful variety.

.  I’d guess he is repeating it more often now because he’s know that fewer and fewer church members agree with him.

We should do only what the majority agrees with?  Why not start holding elections for church offices?  We could elect people that only tell us what we want to hear...

Yes, from a salvation point of view, men and women are the same.  No doubt.

I helped raise five or six boys and 2 girls.  I didn't seem to need to teach them about how to be boys or girls.  They just seemed to know how to do it, by nature.  There was this ineffable difference, how the girls tended to act like, well, girls, and the boys were like all into mischief and running around like little hellions.  Not that the girls couldn't do their share of it, but they were a lot more settled, to give it a word.  In the end, they pretty much all ended up taking on the roles that most men and women take on.
