The Name of the Church

I wonder if President Nelson will re-incorporate and rename the church's legal organization to support this revelation he's received?

Today, the church organization is known as the "Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."  If we're going to be accurate and consistent, would President Nelson mind if we referred to ourselves as "members of the Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?"

Publications have to write articles that people know what church they are referring to.

I think that's the most important point.  This isn't a matter of newsrooms just swapping out the name.  It will take generations before people stop seeing LDS as "Mormons", and that's assuming it could ever happen at all.

And honestly, it will be almost impossible to pull off without sounding like jerks, or at least overly pretentious.

But that would be inaccurate, since he's the only member of that Corporation.

This is the headline of my Yahoo News feed right now.  Made me cringe.  The headline conveys a petty plea.  I'm sure this is not the narrative that President Nelson wants, but messaging is very hard to control.

Good point.  So legally, what are members of the church?  What could I say that has legal standing about my relationship with the Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints?

Legally you could just say you give money to the Corporation of the President of the Church of JC of LDS.  But I think you are a member of the Organization that is the Church of JC of LDS.   Can we type out the acronym to save our fingers a bit? CPCJCLDS?

You could say that you have no relationship to the Corporation of the President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, (other than possibly being a donor?)

Which is a shame, because I would love to tell people that "I'm a member of the CoJCoLdS, also known as Deseret Pasta."

He looks senile in the picture. Yahoo is giving the P.R. dept. some work to do.

I had to chuckle at that, but found the DBA  "PROMISED VALLEY PLAYHOUSE" to be more titillating.

Yeah, that's a really unfortunate picture. You can tell a lot about a person/organization's point of view by the pictures they choose. If you doubt this, look at pictures Fox News uses of Hillary or CNN uses of Trump.

That was a strange one for me to wrap my head around. Legally, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints doesn't exist as an organization. The name is a trademark. The legal entity is the Corporation of the President, but like you say, we're not members of that. The question of legal standing is interesting. I wonder if the only legal standing is as donor or if a court would take into account a person's 'membership' in the trademark name.

I agree.  I’ll try, but I honestly believe not much will change (other than the die hard letter of the law types becoming obsessive about it).  I understand why the change may be good, but I doubt it will be successful.  I will make an effort of course.

Are we going to change the name of this forum???

The word “Mormon” is big and prominent at the top of each page!!!

I don't mean to engage in any 'gotcha' questioning.  Sometimes my opinions aren't well thought out, either.  I just try to fully understand others' thoughts because it helps shape mine (for the better) - especially from people like you.

You and I have a very different approach to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  How naive would I be if I thought I was 'right' and you were 'wrong' in our approaches?  I think our church needs thoughts/perspectives/and approaches of all kinds to function best.  I would not be happy in our church if everyone thought like I do.

So, even though I see you annoy some people on here with what seems to be a more traditionalist/conservative/orthodox/TBM/(whatever you want to call it) perspective - please keep at it.  You force us on the other end of the spectrum to rethink our assumptions IF we consider your ideas seriously, and don't write them off as 'Lloydisms.'  I just hope that from time to time, you'll consider our ideas, too.

The only ideas that really interest me on this topic are those that comport with the revealed word of God as taught in scripture and the inspired words of prophets and apostles.

Ha!  Good question!

Are we going to change it to:

"The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Dialogue and Discussion Board"?

Any journalist worth his/her salt could easily find a way to use the formal and proper name of an organization while making it clear to the reader/viewer/listener what is being referred to. In fact, that’s what good journalists do.

And I say that as a 38-year practitioner of journalism.

Sometime this next week:

Bill:  "I'm a Mormon...

Sue: "not Mormon any more, remember.   It's a member of the Church if you want to take a short cut please.

Bill:  I'm a member of the LDS Church.

Sue:  "not a member of the LDS church but a member of the Church or if you prefer to clarify, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or for short a member of the Church of Jesus Christ."

Bill:  Ok.  I'm a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and according to LDS teaching as I.

Sue:  Not "LDS teaching", remember we're moving away from the terms LDS and Mormon.  It's teachings of the Church of Jesus Christ or Church teachings if the context works.

Bill:  oh man...Alright, anyway, according to LDS, or I mean Teachings of the Church, as I understand, we aren't supposed to treat those who aren't Mormon.

Sue:  Not "Mormon" but members of the Church.

Bill:  arggghhh...Those who are members of the Church nicely, but if they are anti-Mormon...oh is that ok to say anti-Mormon?

Sue:  It must be because what else do we call people are apostates of the LDS Church..

Bill:  Not LDS Church remember...it's the Church, or the Church of Jesus Christ, or the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Sue:  Oh yes...I meant that, but anti-Mormon is a term we've always used so..

Bill:  Isn't Mormon a terms we've always used too?

Sue:  Well not Mormon it's a member of the Church remember...

Bill:  I'm sorry I've got to go.  I dont' get all the fuss here anyway.

I personally can't wait to run into one who is a stickler to the new proposals from the President and see if I can exhaust him or her out of it.

I heard a national talk show host discussing this announcement today on the radio as I was driving.

He stated that part of this announcement was that the Mormon Tabernacle Choir will now be changing their name.  (He was serious.)

I for one welcome the emphasis away from Mormons and Mormonism. I rarely use them myself. I firmly believe it is the right course.

I take then you are not one in "the Mormons aren't Christian camp?" There are many who are, and I believe the term serves to further this tendency. I tell people I am LDS Christian. If others want to call themselves Mormon, I guess it is their prerogative, but LDS Christian is not too much of a mouthful.

Well ... let's say I don't believe Heavenly Father was a man who became a God. I also don't believe Jesus was the first
spirit child of heavenly parents who became a God either.

According to the guideline, you can shorten it to "the Church of Jesus Christ."

I think one can find a similar reference in the Book of Mormon too.

The church's spokesman has said that he knows nothing about the Mormon Tabernale Choir's name changing, so i think the radio host probably spoke out of turn.

I notice that Tad Walch in his Deseret News piece said the new style guide on Newsroom “hinted” that the name of the choir might be.changing because, unlike in the old style guide, the choir was not given as an example for which the name Mormon would be acceptable. But that strikes me as pure speculation.

The radio host might have taken a cue from Tad’s piece.

Oh...I know!  I just had to chuckle when I heard him say that

But then I also had to admit that I could understand why he may have thought it was true, after hearing the announcement.  It's a bit confusing to hear that we now want to avoid the use of the term "Mormons', but then continue calling our choir the "Mormon Tabernacle Choir".  I'll be very surprised if any type of change is made though.

I remember on the mission field when they changed our mission name tags or pocket plaques.  By using the new "Deseret" font which was designed on contract by a guy at byu it gave the name a better look.   They changed the name to emphasize jesus christ.  I get that interpretation to me from president nelson, that he's trying to dig to the foundations of the church in a new way.   Mosiah 26:18  "18 Yea, blessed is this people who are willing to bear my name; for in my name shall they be called; and they are mine."  Will see how it works out.

So, then when you say Mormon, do you think "Christian?" You say using Mormon is not demeaning, but I think you use the term to differentiate from Christians. True?

Do you believe Hebrews and Acts that Yeshua was begotten when the Father told Him "this day I have begotten thee"?
