Tacenda - I would love to see this talk with my sons. That message is what they need to hear.

RPN - I totally agree with you on this. I am looking at in the light of we all have weaknesses. This one is his weakness and learning how to control these feelings and urges will make him even stronger than he is. Once he realises that this is his weakness he can concentrate on making that weakness become strong.

I would love to share it. I went in search of the VHS and couldn't find it. I think I may have given it to the Deseret Industries because I no longer have a VHS player for it. But I will keep looking. I hate when I deep clean and get rid of things I shouldn't have.

ETA: I found it on Google, just put in "Of Souls, Symbols and Sacraments" by Jeffrey R. Holland. It was a speech at BYU in 1988. And you're in luck, they are selling it on DVD at the Deseret Bookstore online for $19.95. I found the full speech online that you could print.

The video may be at your local ward library. My memory says ours has it, though our previous one didn't. If they don't have it and you want to share the wealth after buying it, you can see if the librarians are comfortable with adding it to the library (if it isn't produced by Church Distribution it shouldn't be these days, but some of us keep around some of the closely related to the Church vids, plus just because it isn't produced now, doesn't mean it wasn't produced in the past and discontinued and those would be okay...I will try and get into the library tomorrow to see what our copy has to say for who produced it)

It might be able to be viewed online or downloaded through the BYU speeches site though I suspect Tacenda would have mentioned that along with the full transcript. I will go doublecheck to see.

Youtube has it here:

but there is a good chance this is a copyright violation. I don't know what the rules are for vids, but I doubt using a whole video posted to the general public even after almost 25 years is legal. It may depend on whether the guy copied it off of a repeat on TV as BYU does reshow speeches or took it directly from the vid itself. I get confused on the niceties. I don't think the Church cares in the least about their property rights here save to protect it from being misused, but this can be a chance to teach respect for others. (And I wouldn't include the 'lecture' except you are obviously concerned about teaching your kids correct principles so I thought I might point this out this might be a good chance to do, teaching your kids it is worth $20 to show respect to others and to the laws, etc....) :) If you don't have a VHS player at home, then perhaps you can go to the Church to watch it on some evening with your family for a FHE.

Came across this website you might find useful, perhaps Kevin can tell us if it is a good one:

http://salifeline.or...and-sacraments/

Doesn't look like they have that one on byuspeeches, possibly because it was published by Deseretbook and there would have been copyright issues they didn't want to confuse people over. Here is a speech he made shortly after it where he refers to it briefly though just for fun:

We had some serious Trouble with the youth in our town a few months ago. The attitudes of the kids had changed, as well as their dress habits. Some of the more rebellious ones had even taken to memorizing jokes out of Captain Billy's Whiz Bang, if you know what I mean.

Turns out the problem was that our local billiard hall had installed a new pool table. We decided the best thing to do would be to have the kids focus on something positive (and time consuming!), so we're organizing a youth orchestra with the help of a consultant and musical director.

I'll let you know how it turns out.

When you said "youth orchestra", my mind went immediately to what our Stake started doing. They started just a few yrs. ago, putting on the "Saviour of the World" production (very time consuming) but it changed the lives of the youth and the closeness they felt with the Lord. Too bad they only do this every 4 yrs. as their Youth Conference, much like the Pioneer Trek.

It's cast is made up entirely of the youth. The only adult was the role of the Saviour. And one year I was told, that while in character they each hugged him and felt his nail wounds. It had a profound affect on their relationship, albeit in character form, with the Saviour. They felt the spirit so deeply. Many chose mission's etc. that might not have.

I think it does take a village to raise a child in this circumstance and yours Cinepro.

I once heard Elder Packer in GenCon say that teaching doctrine is more effective at changing behavior than teaching behavior. I am fond of Elder Holland's talk mentioned above and some of the other suggestions, but I'd spend only about 5-10% of the time dealing with chastity per se and the rest on developing spiritual relationships. Maybe have him write reports on Book of Mormon topics, requiring quotations of multiple supporting verses, eg. have him find all verses in the BoM on faith or repentence and write an essay synthesizing the principles in a composite whole.

I've always regretted not going on a vision quest. If he's interested, that may be a helpful option.

Brilliant. I wonder how many people will get what you're referencing.

(I probably shouldn't, but I was in band and choir from 5-10th grades.)

Let me start out by saying this is my first time here. I came here seeking some advise and offering my solution. I have a 14 year old son who has just recently become interested in very mild porn. This is not tolerated in my house. I am very computer literate and can do many things to prevent this. The technical aspect of this really is no problem. I am seeking a more spiritual answer or advise. After discussing this with my wife we decided on the following course of action in hopes that with the Lords help he will overcome this. I have blocked all websites on his computer except lds.org While this current ban is in effect he is allowed to do homework and an assignment that we are giving him. He will spend no less than a week preparing a "paper" or article on the dangers or porn. He is going to do his research using only material from the church website. I do this in the hopes that he will understand the ill effect this can have on him. I know that this stuff is easy to access almost anywhere and I want to bolster him up rather than punish him. My question to you all is what have you done to combat this in your home? and what would you do?

I once knew a man who was so heavily into Porn and so guilt ridden that he found a Urologist that removed his gonads. He was going to church and was married with children. He and his family just stopped coming, and a few years later I ran into him at a clinic where I worked. He told me the truth then. He was so heartbroken. I don't know if he is alive. He quoted the scripture that Jesus Christ used. "If thine right hand offend thee, then pluck it off."

Wow. That certainly shows the dedication as well as the addictive nature. I am shocked he got a doctor who was willing to do that.

Yeah I heard that you. Have got trouble right there in River City. I imagine it will turn out all right with a conman reformed and a whole city leqrning and growing together.
