Church hymns?

In some other groups I been hearing about the hymn book finally being released soon, what have you heard?

Just all online chatter, mostly. Tales of who submitted songs. Boomers dreading if "Hie to Kolob" is on the chopping block. Zoomers who are not sad to see the "funeral music" go.

The rumor I heard (from someone who claimed to have overheard it from a General Authority) is that there is now a new theory among the brethren that the war in heaven began over changes to a new hymnbook.

What's this about "Boomers"? 

And what's wrong with "If I Could Hie to Kolob"? The hymn's been a Latter-day Saint historical classic since W. W. Phelps wrote it over a hundred years ago. It's one of the most beautiful latter-day hymns in the book. And while we get rid of that one, let's also do away with the rest of our history to satisfy the shallow souls of Generation X.

My sister-in-law and her friend submitted a hymn for consideration. As far as I know she hasn't heard anything about it, so I presume the final selection is still yet to be made. Or perhaps announced.

My wife played their hymn on our piano. To be honest, I didn't particular like it.

Even if a hymn isn’t in the hardback version (many won’t be since it will be smaller, yet have new songs), my guess is the digital library will be big, possibly huge in a few years as people add songs to it that are in use locally.  I wonder if there will be an approval process for that or rather how complicated it will be.  I like the idea as long as there is not a copyright or doctrinal issue, a hymn should be allowed.  They could easily keep track of views and cull those songs every five years or so that get few hits even in the region it’s native to.

I heard once it wasn't included because of doctrinal issues.  I just looked up the lyrics and in the verses listed there I could see no doctrinal issues. 

I wonder if whoever told me that thought that by not including something like "after all we can do" made it not doctrinal? That wouldn't be true, but that might have been their thinking.

I got confused with Come thou font. The song you posted is a mashup of Font and Kolob, and I sang it with my DIL and a friend a few years ago.  Pretty arrangement.

I heard it was because of the whole “wretched man” part, not being doctrinal. But I never heard that from anybody who had any authority so I’m not sure.

Interesting. 

Still doesn't work though if you consider how Nephi thought of himself at one point.  Or if you take the definition of wretch that means "unhappy".

The committee for the last hymnbook thought it too closely taught the protestant doctrine of salvation by grace alone.

Personally, I liked the song the first 5000 times that I heard it, but since then it's been wearing on me.

That's basically what I was thinking. Reading the lyrics I didn't see that in the words themselves. You have to add in the alone part in your thinking

Here in Catholic Louisiana, LDS that come from Catholics families compromise at funerals with the Catholics hosting the funeral at their church and having the LDS bring a Choir to do all the music. We try to stick to more familiar hymns, we always throw Amazing Grace in the middle of it, which people seem to really appreciate.

Seems to me that seeing humans as wretched fits our doctrine of the natural man as an enemy of God.
