poptart Posted February 19, 2022 Posted February 19, 2022 With all the politics going on here's one I'm curious about, think the church will ever get behind marijuana legalization? It's awesome they're ok with medical marijuana, was wondering about recreational.

It had benefits for me, but also some big drawbacks, especially as time went on and I used very small doses. I am concerned about people using it without at least minimal supervision…which I was given and having it available through pharmacist supervision which made it very easy to ask questions. Got some great advice from them. Just checked in with my psychiatrist every couple of months to share what and how I was doing. That could have been limited to twice a year after the first renewal, which was 3 months iirc. I highly doubt they would get behind it given the Church policy on not using drugs recreationally, they might not oppose it though. My guess is more likely it will stay as is, medical usage only. I get it if they don't get behind legalization, I'm just sick of the politics behind it, legalize it and move on. Geez, alcohol is one of the worst things humankind ever made and it's legal, add that in with the opioid problem we're having and it's a nightmare. Addiction is a horrible thing, I keep seeing and hearing about the poor health of millenials and alcohol is almost always involved. Working around it is just depressing. 1
The Nehor Posted February 19, 2022 Posted February 19, 2022 It is unlikely the church will take a stance on legalization. They probably will continue to hold that using it recreationally is a violation of the Word of Wisdom but members can support or oppose legalization if they wish. I support legalization but would want well-considered cut-off levels for driving and other potentially dangerous activities. Sadly this is a problem because evidence of marijuana use ironically stays in a person's system much longer than more dangerous recreational drugs. By that I mean virtually every other recreational drug. 1

That, plus the fact that (and don't read this as an endorsement of alcohol: It is not) based on weight, prior history of use, contemporaneous food consumption, previous effects, and so on, it is fairly easy to predict what a certain amount of alcohol in the system will do to a person's ability to drive. Not so with Marijuana. THC levels vary from plant to plant, and, hence, from joint to joint and edible to edible (even when the edibles are "the same," came from the same batch, and so forth). Add to that the fact that its effect from person to person is much less predictable than it is with alcohol, and quickly, the potentially massive problems of gauging whether one is "safe" to drive with a particular measurable amount of THC in the system become readily apparent. 4

Is there any reason to think otherwise? As a non member who's experience with the Christian religion has been mostly Trinitarian? yes. I have member friends and family but that's about it. I do like Joseph Smith quite a bit (from a secular POV) but don't believe in your religion spiritually. It's annoying for me, I have issues finding Christians here stateside I can take seriously, they're either ignorant or just use whatever religious office to cause political problems, the Lutherans are quite bad about that here unfortunately. I makes me sick seeing how the privileged, entitled end just spew things that make inner synod politics ugly, now even the Catholics here are running off at the mouth as badly. While across the pond the Catholic church is taking a step in the right direction with LGBTQ rights the ones here make me wonder if they have their klan robes next to their Sunday best. So far? The LDS churches leadership has been fantastic, I love how they've handled covid despite a lot of their more privileged membership base having the nerve to run their mouths off about how their Prophet is misguided. (at least that's what I saw one poster here say, hope things work out for him with his family.) I get it, this is the USA, in general people here really have little to no civility left in them which is why I asked. Like Pope Francis I find it amazing that the LDS faithful here would dare run their mouths off about their Prophet, the man who is supposed to be able to understand the will of God, that's just the culture here. Anyway, I don't expect them to be totally backing it but with how they've reacted towards social justice, embracing more diverse worship music and of course one of my main things LGBTQ rights, I was just wondering. Your leadership I consider the cool heads in the room, with the medical people they have I'm real curious if/when they'll have anything to say on it. I'm kinda hoping they'll have something science backed, what i've seen the LDS church put out there for mental health is just fantastic. Edited February 19, 2022 by poptart 1
provoman Posted February 19, 2022 Posted February 19, 2022 I say legalize it all out. Regulate it like alcohol and tobacco. Life sucks sometimes, let people enjoy an escape.

Is there any reason to think otherwise? Hmmm….but alcohol and tobacco are specific in the Word of Wisdom. “mind altering” is not in the Word of Wisdom. i think “illegal” may be current wording, but if a Country or US State permitted recreational use of marijuana, then use of marijuana in those places would have been within the Word of Wisdom. Is there any reason to think otherwise? You don't live in Utah! The church, IMO, will not okay recreational, heck it didn't want medical, but were basically bull dozed by those who do, including members.

Bernard Gui Posted February 19, 2022 Posted February 19, 2022 By all means! We need more drug usage in our world. Drugs are are friends.

But to me recreational, isn't being used for medical reasons. Or maybe it can be, boy I'm all over the place here. I guess I'm with those that worry about the harm that can be done, just as opioids....they can cause people to wreck in their cars as well. I don't like the smell, my nose detector picks up on it all the time. My son vaped it in the window well in our home, it's helped his anxiety and depression by a long shot. So that's when I smelled it, and when walking in Vegas recently I smelled it, of all places on the freeway! ETA: No, I wasn't walking on the freeway, lol. I smelled it walking on the sidewalk and while driving on the freeway. Edited February 19, 2022 by Tacenda

Yeah, and the problems is that the metabolites that are often used in testing stick around from anywhere from a few days to a month. This is a big problem for roadside testing because someone who hasn’t used it that day is not impaired so testing to see if it was the cause of an accident or caused erratic driving gets difficult. Alcohol and most other drugs metabolize more quickly and most at least roughly go down in the same way impairment does. 1

Then again, I want stricter DUI/DWAI laws period, sickens me how many lives are ruined by irresponsible people. 3 hours ago, Tacenda said: Went over my head, lol! Something from moms background, marijuana grows everywhere in Hawaii, back when it was illegal Hawaii was one of those places where no one cared. Before I was born the police had a hit and run/drug bust on the street mom lived on, someone stole some guys moped and the marijuana plant he had growing in a planter, the owner of both ran the thief over with his car. WHen the cops arrested him one asked was it worth it? The guy wasn't so much concerned with the moped, it was his plant he wanted back lol. Anyway, mom and her cousins raise their kids to avoid that stuff, parenting is still a thing over there. Meanwhile the cousins I have here I hear about from time to time believe their kids have all kinds of mental illnesses, have them on psyche meds and of course expect society to do their jobs while they live privileged suburbanite lives. It's something I never understood here, why the culture here lacks that common sense, as someone who learned about it as an adult, it is what it is. No idea what your situation is, I can understand why some parents would worry about it but in the back of my head I always ask, what are you as the parent doing about it? I learned a while ago, it's best not to ask people here those questions, so many take it as an insult. Props to the LDS church, the membership seems to be the exception to that rule. Moms BYUH classmates are fantastic parents/grandparents as are the relatives I have here. Here's me hoping you can show all the transplants flocking to Utah what responsible parenting is.

I think it wonderful that cannabis extract is being used to help calm the brains of children with epilepsy, and for other medical reasons. Recreational drug use is a very different matter, and I doubt that Latter-day Saints will ever approve of drinking tea, coffee, or anything harder. 2

I'm not sure what you are really asking because there are a lot of things that are legal (gambling, cigarettes, alcohol...) that the Church doesn't get behind.
