Better to avoid it. ..................... I would panic because my body wouldn’t want to move and I felt I would stop breathing if I stopped paying close attention to it. Maybe there would have been a breakthrough point if I had taken more, but it didn’t feel worth it to me. Now whether that would have stayed with me once I was sober again, I don’t know. He had no motivation to deceive. He wasn't avoiding potential trouble at all, and he was honest with me both before and after. On a personal note, I studied for my master's degree at an American university (in?)famous for being one of the most 'progressive'. I lived in a block of flats my first year, with an internal corridor, doors directly across from each other. One Friday night, I woke up feeling really sick. When I attempted to get out of bed, I realised I was dizzy and disorientated. I walked to the kitchenette to get some water, and when I switched the light out, I could see that my flat was filled with smoke. Terrified that the building was on fire, I opened the door. The smoke was billowing out from under the door of the flat opposite and, with my window open, being sucked straight into mine. I could hear music and voices, and it finally dawned on me that this smoke, which wasn't tobacco, must be something else. Still dizzy and a bit nauseated, I rolled up a wet towel to block the gap under the door and went back to bed -- a tactic I used each weekend thereafter. So yeah, I was affected by smoke from under my door. Thanks for the story. It may be about habituation. I was an atheist communist hippie when I first smoked pot and sought after the experience, so I never had the opportunity to experience "second hand smoke" because my experiences were always quite voluntary in those days, and I was probably habituated to the point that I would not even notice the effects of a small dose. For us the towel under the door was to keep the smoke IN the room, lest we get arrested for at least possession by being reported by some "square" guy like you.! I mean, like, whatcha gonna do with these religionists anyway? How dumb can you be to believe that God stuff?? I got better. 2

Wait a minute- we cannot possibly merit the rewards he has, so I guess it IS a welfare state after all. The rewards FAR excell what we can do on our own. But you want to get rewarded for things you did NOT do? Sorry it doesn't work that way in this world OR the next.

Your new analogy is flawed as well. A degree and a level of demonstrated competence in a choses career is not the same as paying money or other restrictions on to get to the highest heaven. This is where I think Christian faiths that focus more on grace than works have a better theology.. Sure the expectation is after you are saved by grace the works will follow as the fruit of your salvation. But you don't have this long list of controlling petty rules to follow.

You may not have been forced but your indoctrination from a high demand organization that uses techniques that persuade its believer to make such choices was there whether you want to admit it or not. We disagree on pretty much everything here; however, there are other more important things on the “list” that haven’t been addressed…only the few material things that seem to irritate. We could start with charity, without which nothing else matters, not even paying a full tithing nor strictly obeying the Word of Wisdom. If one doesn’t believe there is a heaven (and everything is subjective), then what greater benefits does your subjective view have to offer? Why get heartburn over those who do believe? That seems nonsensical, too. When I envision a great dinner, I plan a menu, work for money, go to the store to buy the ingredients (or if I farm I grow them myself, but the seeds have to come from somewhere), prepare and cook the food, put it on the table, and share with family or friends. I wish I could give you multiple up-arrow responses to your post, but alas, I can only give one I am in Arizona, and before this whole COVID thing I used to visit clients in Albuquerque multiple times a year, and there is nothing in the world better than New Mexico style Mexican food, along with their green chilies. And now because of technology changes and other arrangements, I no longer have the same need to go to Albuquerque, but I still talk on the phone or have meetings with the same clients. And they know of my love for their Mexican food, and they like to rub it in occasionally by mentioning what they had for lunch that day. Maybe some day I'll get to go back! Edit to add: Another interesting item are the Navajo Tacos that I got in Gallup. More green chilies, and also very good. Edited February 24, 2022 by InCognitus 1
