It's Time for Another Church Wide Fast

Recommended Posts

With the undoubted success that the churches worldwide fast had on quelling the Covid-19 pandemic and quickly bringing it to an ignominious end and in quickly ending the Australian Bush fires by causing the storm clouds to gather and extinguishing those fires after over 17 million hectors had already been toasted in 2019, its time for the church to again weld its mighty collective power and call for another church wide fast to bring the Utah drought to a quick and lasting end as well.

Yesterday Utah's Governor Cox announced that we were in the midst of yet another drought.  When he made the announcement I immediately thought of all of the success that we have experienced first hand with the other church wide fasts to end the pandemic and Australian bush fires and thought,  yup, time for another fast.  If the church acts quickly, probably at April conference,  while it might be too late to salvage the ski season, at least summer boating could be saved and we could have this drought knocked out by the beginning of summer.

I pale to wonder what might have happened had the church not stepped in and held our collective church wide fast, can you even imagine the number of deaths and loss of lives had we not?

So who's with me? Time to fast.

You question the sincerity of my post?  Where's your faith brother? Have you not experienced the results of the fast first hand?  How can you doubt?

Fasting (without prayer) is just to go without food.  So what we really should be asking is that everyone pray, preferably a lot more than usual for those who usually don't pray very much.

I don't know why so many people seem to think fasting is the important part.  And yes you should actually use the words "and pray" when you ask people to fast, otherwise you are simply asking them to go without food.

Because prayer is the daily norm (or should be).  Fasting is the special extra effort.

I usually spend most of my day going without food, all but about 1 hour of my day while I am awake.  It usually takes me and my wife longer than that to prepare our food before we eat it, but the eating part doesn't usually take very long at all.

Praying usually takes a lot less effort than eating or going without food does.  How much time do you usually spend every day going without food and why do you see going without food as something that takes some special effort?

I am beginning to suspect this is just a disingenuous attempt to slim down members of the Church.

If God wanted that to happen he'd put Mountain Dew and Doctor Pepper back in the Word of Wisdom.

So you're suggesting that going without food (in addition to prayer) is no big effort?
I recommend you take a look around on the next fast Sunday.  It seems like fasting is a BIG effort to most.  (But I agree with you.  Fasting is something I don't find too hard).

Yeah.  As I said, I usually spend all but about 1 hour of my waking hours going without eating food.

If you're talking about how fat some people are I think that has more to do with what people eat than how often people eat.  But yes there are some people who spend more time eating than some other people.

Not doing something is usually easier than doing something specific, for most people, I think.  But the point I was making is that the important part of fasting with prayer is the prayer part.

So we should ask others to do the important part, regardless of which part is easier to do.

I have no doubt that if asked, just like their overwhelming support for the state's mask mandate and vaccination push, church members would rally to support another church wide fast.

...probably, but I would still be a bit perturbed if some other member asked me to "fast" rather than ask me to "pray".  My mind automatically translates "fast" to "go without food" because I know what the word "fast" means.

So I would probably go:  Eh, he or she probably means to ask me to pray, even though he or she isn't using the word pray, so if they want me to pray, sure, I will do that.  I pray every day without anyone asking me to pray anyway so no big deal.

A church-wide fast for anything weather related is not wise. Some areas need less rain, some more. Maybe there is enough pressure from dead powder skiers in heaven to get snow on demand but I doubt it. A church - wide fast for this pandemic to be eased does make sense.

Saints in the Amazon rain forest ,I suppose, could ask for some of their rain to be transferred to Utah. Nah, that is expecting too big a miracle.

I would.  Though I don't really enjoy fasting.  I like to eat too much.

God's will is what it is, and if it's not what we are fasting for, then the fast isn't going to change it.  But, it never hurts to ask.

Maybe if everyone around the coastal regions stopped sinning and causing the hurricanes (based on what some religious figures say) the moisture might make it in to Utah.

Oh yeah. You deserve a hurricane or two.

And then when the Moronis get blown off, the footage can be set to the tune of "See the might angel flying"

But with the cyclones, floods, fires, insect invasions, heat waves, cold snaps, and occasional earthquake that Australia gets, according to those same preachers Australia must have some pretty sinful people.

Reminds me of the eve of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, and there was not enough snow.  Some North American aborigines did a snow dance, and, voila, there was snow that night.  Capped an amazing rescue effort by Mitt Romney --  brought in at the last minute to reorganize the Utah Olympics.

Well, we just had some snow in the mtns (Park City is happy), and we are due for more precipitation next week.   So all is not lost this time around.  I'm so glad that we have Fair Dinkum calling for a faithful response.  He will surely receive his reward.  :diablo:

Yes, but one can save money by not eating.  Then one can afford to pay his mortgage.

the churches worldwide fast had on quelling the Covid-19 pandemic

The CDC stated that if you have the virus between the ages of 0 to 70, you have a 99% survival rate. And if you’re over 70, the survival rate is nearly 95%. (Source: https://www.winknews.com/2020/09/23/cdc-shows-covid-19-has-high-survival-rate-doctor-still-wants-to-see-precautions-taken/). At rates like that, the fast may have been intended more to end the 1984-style lockdowns, in which case the fast would have been an organized request or begging of God to restore/install more logic and reason in the public sector. If God's answer was: Don't hold your breath or this won't end until mankind no longer exist on the earth or start a revolution, would we have responded accordingly? Doubt it.

This may sound heartless but people died and die at a certain rate each day due to their health statuses (obesity, cancer, heart disease, etc.).

I am not sure that rate has increased significantly due to covid.

Hospitals received an increase in funding for each Medicare-covered patient they had who died "due to covid."  Medicare being the forced health insurance coverage everyone above a certain age is required by law to use, and coincidentally this same older age group includes those who are only 95% likely to recover from covid.

Trump's modern medical miracle of fast-tracking three vaccines in record time, notwithstanding the FDA's indifference, is quite an accomplishment. Some may see the vaccines as an answer to the Churchwide fast. I don't because I don't believe this was a real pandemic. If it was real/organic we wouldn't be seeing herd immunity after all of us probably already caught the virus, and we wouldn't see the virus attack certain blood types and groups and demographic populations the way it has.

I hope this is not offensive to anyone, especially the Lord.

I read a joke??? once upon a time that went something like this: The rains were coming down hard and the weather reports were for more rain and flooding. A man was sitting on his porch with the water up almost to the top of his steps when some neighbors came by on an all terrain vehicle and offered a ride to safety. The man demurred saying, "I'll just wait on the Lord to save me."

The rains came down and the water flooded the house, forcing the man to take refuge in the second story. Some rescuers came by on a boat and offered to get him to safety, but again he demurred, saying, "I'll just wait on the lord to save me."

The rains came down and the waters rose forcing the man onto his roof. A helicopter came by and the operator let down a ladder offering another chance for safety, but again the faithful man demurred, saying, "I'll just wait on the lord to save me."

The rains still came down and eventually the man drowned. Finding himself in the spirit coming before God, the man asked plaintively, "Lord, I have lived a good Christian life and have prayed continually and yet you did not save me from drowning."

The Lord replied, "I sent you an all terrain vehicle, a boat, and a helicopter. What more do you want?"

And now, I was recently contemplating the same thing about the COVID-19 and all of the prayers that had been offered and yet the pandemic is still with us. But then came the thought that scientists had somehow produced several vaccines in a period of time which conventional scientific wisdom was that it would take a couple of years. That is when I thought of the above joke.

God answers prayers in His own way and normally does not counsel with us mortals on just how He should go about His business. It is terribly frustrating to those who know better than God how to run things on this earth.

I suffered through a horrific burn accident on November 29th of 2019. I was not supposed to survive that experience due to the severity of the burns and my age, but I was lifted up by prayers from a lot of good people and I am still here spouting off, although I have been slowed down considerably and am still recovering.

There is no one that will be able to convince me that the Lord did not hear and act upon the prayers for me, and there is no one that will be able to convince me that the Lord did not have a hand in guiding those scientists in getting those vaccines developed so quickly.

Glenn

I'm so sorry you went through that, I worked in a hospital and a certain day of the week was with several burn patients getting treatments. It would be one of the worst pains to go through. I found it difficult to work on that day to see their pain. I'm glad the prayers got through to God, I believe he and the angels do a lot! Including helping with the vaccine and it's urgency. It's up to the us to be able to get the signals I guess and then help. Take care Glenn!
