Should Elder Uchtdorf step down?

Recommended Posts

No. Why should he step down?  He is a great person, and has acknowledged the mistake.  Forgiveness is an important part of life.  Also, it’s not like this is a critical rule he broke...it is an internal rule and mormon leaders frequently break their own internal rules.

You guys are making this way more complicated than it needs to be. The young women in this video is wise beyond her years.

It's a woman telling women they're beautiful in this video, there's a difference, IMO. I'm sorry that so many men before you and others, ruined it for you and others.

It's the icky feelings one receives when the compliment comes from thinking the man might have ulterior motives. The non-trust when getting compliments from men not related or close to you or that you don't know well or not at all.

If the compliment is that they appreciate you for something other than your looks too. Since the catcalls in the past or ? give a icky feeling, like what's next?

But you telling your daughter she's beautiful, is absolutely wonderful. My dad wasn't the best at giving me compliments, but I'd much rather he be proud of me for more than looks.

Don't take these comments as if we're bashing you. I'll bet your wife has run up against this in her lifetime at some time and she may not have always felt comfortable around a stranger. I'm sure there are compliments, and then there are compliments, if you get my drift.

I want you to know its really hard for me not to give you a compliment right now, but out of respect for you, I'll just say, yes, I'll try to "listen" to you better. Now pleeeeaaassse, let's end this. Watcha say? Please have the last word, it's all you.

Do you really want to hear what Calm and others of us have to say or do you just want us to be quiet because we don’t agree with everything you say? It’s kind of patronizing telling Calm she has the last word.

Mike, I can’t agree with your approach about making unsolicited and cringeworthy remarks to perfect strangers, but I do thank you for being a lightning rod. I made a comment that I sensed from the outset would not be kindly received by some here. Surely enough, the jackals were starting to circle. Then you came loping by and drew them off. Well executed!

Really? Jackals? How mature.

I'm just wondering why you have to find a new favorite within the context of the situation with Edler Uchtdorf?  I read your comment to mean he used to be your favorite, but now isn't.

Because of his apparent political affiliation of course. Isn't that what this thread is kind of about?

I guess that must say something about me.  I'm politically conservative but more liberal when it comes to religion.

He shouldn't step down for this peccadillo.   Besides, the church was for Biden anyway.

Oh really?

Where the country went in a bad direction is when religion started identifying with one particular party.  That party took up the branding to get the voting block.  Now it is almost impossible to separate the two.   It made it so politics was divided by religion.  It can all be traced back to Phyllis Schlafly when she made the ERA a religious crusade rather than a political cause and handed over mailing lists of religious organizations to the Republican Party to fund raise off of and get out the vote organizing.  Before that, Republicans and Democrats didn't see any connection between giving women equal rights and religion.  Even the Church took up the cause long after the amendment had been passed with wide, bipartisan support (including that of both major political parties, both houses of Congress, and presidents Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter.  There was a really interesting in-depth series on the ERA on Netflicks a couple of months back.

I was personal witness to all that, but it only points up the continuing tendency toward mercenary and Machiavellian strategies to dominate the political scene.  That won't be changing any time soon.  The only good thing about those unseemly tendencies is that our Constitution assumes the worst.  That's right, evil is banal and always has been.  All of us are riding the tyger.

You are actually calling Peacefully a jackal? What has she ever done to you to deserve that?

Questioned my maturity level for a post made in jest.

I’m actually taking note of the up votes her post has already garnered. And a couple of earlier posts from others implying that I am jealous of Elder Uchtdorf.

What was it the standup comedian said? “Tough crowd.”

Right, because it is funny calling fellow Saints jackals.

And where was the circling before besides in your imagination?  Your first response was from me and I agreed with you the comment was inappropriate and continued to say so.

I recognize that. It was when others chimed in that the circling began. And the jackals comment WAS intended in a light vein.

As I said, tough crowd.

What circling?  Two people who probably saw their comments as intended in a light vein...but you have a right to take offense at that and others don’t at being called jackals?

And one person responding (me) counts as a crowd now?  Quite a bit of inflation going on.

This conversation is going nowhere, so I’m exiting it now.

We all make mistakes; and the gospel teaches us to admit them. I'm not troubled about the "family" donations, or even the so-called oversight on Elder Uchtdorf's part. I am concerned that His explanation is less than forthcoming, and sounds like he has something to hide, or someone to protect. He is a public figure and should understand his oversight triggers journalistic scrutiny as well as head scratching among the Church membership. Why leave us wondering? Just tell us who made the donations; explain the need for an online family account with your name on it, and trust us to make our own evaluation of the facts. We can handle the truth, if it is the whole truth. Attempts to cover up the truth reveal much more about a person's character than the initial "oversight" that was uncovered. This raises serious questions in my mind about openness, candor, and transparency on the part of Elder Uchtdorf. Nixon fell from the Presidency not because of the Plumbers' illegal break in, but from using his office to try and cover it all up.

Yes thank you. Are you ok with me giving you compliments like I did on the other thread?

Oh my gosh. Oh my gosh oh my gosh, really?  I read tacendas post just 30 seconds ago and was like, alright, this whole situation has calmed down, great post tacenda, Thank you. But, then I get to this one and kaboom!!!  Where I come from, offering someone the last word means giving them a chance to define how the heated conversation will end in their opinion and then dropping it. It was me bowing out and giving her the opportunity to define how the conversation will end. Gee whiz, I was doing exactly what she was telling me to do, to stop talking and listen!! And somehow you saw that as patronising? I didnt understand what Scott meant till now, it's almost as if I'm wearing a meat necklace around my neck. 😉

Not every instance of idle curiosity merits being gratified — especially where a non-governmental entity like the Church or an individual leader therein or his family are concerned.

And I say that as a retired-but-still-curious journalist. 😉

Those who are spun up about Elder Uchtdorf or members of his family being involved in partisan politics should consider the link below. Hoo boy! Katie bar the door! I bet Joe Biden’s Catholic ears were burning after that sermon.

Yeah, offering someone the last word in a conversation is done quite frequently around here. It only means that one chooses not to continue the exchange but recognizes that the other party might still have something to say. Nothing rancorous is implied by or should be inferred from it.

Incidentally, thanks for stopping by again. I need that lightning rod once more. 😉
