“Come Thou Fount”? Not particularly, as hymns go.

Maybe it’s arranged in a difficult key for your vocal range. The melody lines of most of our hymns are in a troublesome key for me, but it’s not an issue, because I sing the bass lines.

I am bad at singing so I am a bad source but I found it hard to sing well the rare cases I tried to sing it.

You sound like you’re criticizing just for the sake of criticizing.  You’re not even making sense in some of your statements.

Elder Holland’s son was called over “some other guy” because that was Heavenly Father’s plan.  But you’ve already stated that you won’t accept anything that you don’t personally like, so even the truth won’t be acceptable to you.

You’re sounding more and more like an angry anti all the time.

Cabin fever. Staying at home all the time is starting to affect me too. 😉

as I said to Stargazer, whom I like by the way, I want things to be reasonable and make sense, it doesn't make sense to me to have this tradition r whatever of calling your kids or buddies to these callings, how does that fit in foreordination? So, you're saying that the reason Matthew Holland was placed in Elder Holland's family was just so he could get a calling in the Church? Do we normally accept things we don't like? no, we do something about it and figure it out to accept it or change it. I am hardly angry, I am drinking pepsi🍸

To be clear we are talking about your stake right? With the stories you tell I am not sure your leadership could organize a rainwater regatta that did not somehow go apostate.

it's only 3 years!!!!!!!!!!!! and they are rich!!!! dumb but rich!

I was talking about Richard Hinckley, who was a GA. I am not questioning their ability but 16 million members of the Church and it's one family leading it? Pres. Kimball, Benson and Hunter did not have any of their children serve a GAs so if they said we don't believe in nepotism they yeah, their actions fit with what they are saying

Two people from a family is not a family leading it. There are a lot of General Authorities.

Wealth is the primary and only qualification now and intelligence is optional? That is a little horrifying.

what are the gospel principles backing it? I think you mean practice

D&C 86:10 Therefore your life and the priesthood have remained, and must needs remain through you and your lineage until the restoration of all things spoken by the mouths of all the holy prophets since the world began.

Abraham 1:2...I became a rightful heir, a High Priest, holding the right belonging to the fathers.
3 It was conferred upon me from the fathers; it came down from the fathers, from the beginning of time, yea, even from the beginning, or before the foundation of the earth, down to the present time, even the right of the firstborn, or the first man, who is Adam, or first father, through the fathers unto me.
4 I sought for mine appointment unto the Priesthood according to the appointment of God unto the fathers concerning the seed.

The principle of birthright blessings, lineal priesthood, and heirship is all through scripture.  Christ merited his calling through both his righteousness AND by being the firstborn.  Hyrum became Church patriarch because of it, and was Joseph's probable successor had he not died first.  Brigham ordained two sons as Apostles outside of the quorum when they were youths claiming a patriarchal right to bless his posterity.

Yeah, me too, and it's starting at 1 am my time. In just a few minutes. >Yawn<

I admit I would enjoy the British General Conference times much better now that I am not under mission rules and would not have to go to a building. I usually do not get to bed until 2 or 3 in the morning.

It was strange hearing a talk this morning referring to the bloodline of Joseph Smith, strange but good.

Heretic!

No, actually, that's my favorite! Or was until my wife introduced me to Pepsi Max. Which is not available in the US!

well, it died with Joseph Smith and it went to Hyrum

Priesthood doesn't equal callings in General Church leadership.

The good news is that we're a long way removed from the days of Brigham Young ordaining his 11 year old son an apostle in the hopes of having him be church president, only for him to become a complete dirtbag:

As much as I find the guy obnoxious and I am reasonably sure I would have avoided him if I knew him in life I am not sure “complete dirtbag” is an accurate description.

One of the advantages of being childless is not having to worry about a crazy mission president for my kids.

There are not a lot of advantages so I take what I can get.

Let's just say "not the kind of guy you want as church president" then.

That I agree with and admit I might have cackled had I been there when he got the clarifying message that apostolic seniority would be by time in the Quorum and not time holding that office.

It has been talked to death

Correct.  It supercedes them.

"I do not care who leads the Church, even though it were Ann Lee, but one thing I must know, and that is what God says about it. I have the Keys and the means of obtaining the mind of God on the subject." - Brigham Young

Priesthood keys trump Church calling  (in the unlikely event they ever diverge).

It is my understanding/belief that general conference talks typically aren't vetted. I wonder if the youth speakers were an exception (not that they were bad talks at all).

I am sure if something went way off the rails a translator would have said something.

I predict the two talks will cause a mild stir as the two talks exemplified how males and females have sometimes different experiences in the church (e.g. the young man could have more-or-less given the young woman's talk, but not vice versa).

Really?  Hu.  I thought they went through layers of careful checks.  That was my opinion.

Duncan I have a similar response as you do to the selection process. I can live with it, though.  I don’t expect God to direct all callings the way others do.
fwiw.
