Metis_LDS Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 Hello this is not a trick question and I do not know the answer. Perhaps there is not one? If you think about all the work done in the Temples, there are more than one place do operate in except for the Baptismal Font. Question: Why do Temples only have one Baptismal Font per Temple???
InCognitus Posted November 4, 2019 Posted November 4, 2019 Good question. Maybe because if there were two fonts there would be 24 oxen, and there are only 12 tribes of Israel? All joking aside, maybe it's just a demand issue? But that may vary depending on the temple. Up until recently, I was going to a local temple to do baptisms for the dead with our youth on almost every Saturday morning, and it was nearly packed most of the time with about a 45 minute wait (some weekends were exceptions). But Saturday morning is kind of a rush-hour for that ordinance I would imagine.
Popular Post strappinglad Posted November 4, 2019 Popular Post Posted November 4, 2019 Much higher processing speed. A well coordinated team can average about 1 baptism/confirmation per minute. Not hard to keep up with endowments if many youth are involved. I think temple workers get baptised if needed but I personally have not seen that. 6

I can think of one Temple where in theory keeping up would not apply. I am told by those who did attend that the London England Temple used to have a single "Instruction Room" that could hold 200 patrons. So in theory for that one Temple back then (I think it has been remade into smaller rooms) 3 full endowment sessions total of 600 would outpace the font even assuming 60 baptism an hour over 8 hours (a rate that would be difficult to maintain). It mostly likely did not happen much to get three full sessions of 200 people but the font workers could not of kept up. Edited November 6, 2019 by Metis_LDS addition for clarity
strappinglad Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 Anyone who is aware of the process out there? I doubt that temples run at full capacity most of the time. Have there been times when patrons have been turned away because of lack of names ?

Not turned away for lack of names, but because there was more than an hour and a half wait to do baptisms for the dead. We did confirmations only instead. Edited November 6, 2019 by InCognitus

If we were concerned about doing as many as possible at a time we would have fonts the size of large swimming pools and multiple people baptizing, with enough witnesses to keep track of however many baptisms. I think it's more about not wanting to go too fast, not wanting to make it look like a high volume processing facility. Doing baptisms at a dignified pace, with a sacred atmosphere. As calm and peaceful as possible, rather than hurried so they can do another quickly. 1
Ahab Posted November 6, 2019 Posted November 6, 2019 On a related note, how does an adult do baptisms for family members? I'd like to do the baptism ordinance for my grand Dad instead of having a teen do it. From what I hear baptisms seem like they're something teens do but I want to do one as an adult. Is this something I should ask my bishop about? Or the missionaries? Or the ward mission leader? Who in my ward should I talk with about this? 1

I've been baptized for family names (belonging to others in the group) when I went with our youth. We were limited to four baptisms per person per visit because of the volume of people wanting to do them. So when we had more family names to do (or more male names) than the youth could handle in a visit, I would participate too. And I've seen other adults go in for their own family names as well. It might help if you hook up with a youth group to make it easier, but if you just show up they will likely be able to accommodate you (depending on your temple). 1

Someone at the front desk? I suppose I could go there next and see what they say. Thank you for your information.

Have there been times when patrons have been turned away because of lack of names ? Unless they bring their own names youth generally get 3-5 names each now. There is a big backlog of baptized and confirmed people. I do remember when they opened the temple in Preston they were trying to get a ton of youth groups to go in the first few months. They did not have a big backlog to start off with.
InCognitus Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 (edited) 15 minutes ago, Ahab said: Who would I ask at the temple? Someone at the front desk? Yes, although we have a separate desk at our temple for baptisms (I think most do). And the desk for baptisms would be the best place to ask. Regarding the adults getting baptized, while waiting to do confirmations one time we watched a group of adults doing baptisms in ASL. That was pretty cool to watch. By the way, I understand your questions. Before I started going with the youth I was totally clueless on how it all worked. I'm less-clueless now than I used to be. I’ve done my family names by going with a group of adults. Several of us were converts who were just starting to do our family work. We organized a group from our ward, including members who were experienced in doing family work, and reserved a time. We all stood proxy for several family members, then someone from the group volunteered to be proxy for the opposite sex. It was a really wonderful experience. 2

Our ordinance rooms used to occupy at least 100, now they are being reduced in size. We have, I think 26 veils and typically use 10 or so and that is for fast turnaround. We would not have enough workers to work 26 if we had the patrons suddenly for some reason

We have had sessions where we were filled to capacity and beyond- but those are once in a lifetime events for most ordinance workers. I have seen like 2 in my 15 years on my weekday night shift.

No I can't even conceive of that Of course I am not in Utah where they have waiting lists of people wanting to be workers.

Yes this is the thrust of training today- slow emphasizing every word and realizing these are PEOPLE receiving their ordinances, and not "names" They are YOUR ancestors and mine, or should be treated as such. Would you do an ordinance as fast as you can if it were your grandma? (general question- not to Ahab) 2

You have some excellent responses. But also, I find it symbolic for the one gate, the one way to enter the path. It is fairly easy and quick to get onto the covenant path, not so easy to stay on it with advancing knowledge, obligations and the associated opposition. 1

Are there LDS temples that have the font upon only 6 physical oxen? Thanks, Jim

It has 4 ordinance rooms now, and offhand I can't be sure how many patrons can each room can hold, but it might be as many as 100. Perhaps I shall count them next time I'm there. 1
