blueglass Posted October 19, 2019 Posted October 19, 2019 I thought the long length dresses the sisters wear were already a fundamentalist worry, then they came out with weird pants recommendations https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/church/news/all-sister-missionaries-now-have-option-of-wearing-slacks?lang=eng Now with this jackets rule not sure what's going on. Was the mission presidents wife (still no update on this title change) on board with this rule change?
Calm Posted October 19, 2019 Posted October 19, 2019 (edited) Are the elders require to wear suit coats, no short sleeves in the meetings? I can see trying to make the dress rule consistent, especially if there was complaining by elders. But if they were told just in the presence of elders, it suggests something else. We asked if it was cold in the building (because it was still warm outside), because it looked kind of weird for them to be at a baptism with coats on, and we were told that all the sister missionaries have to wear sweaters or jackets whenever they are around Elders. Because their missionary-approved dresses and shirts just aren't modest enough by themselves, so there needs to be another layer of protection. If anyone wants to know what it looks like when the focus on "modesty" gets out of hand, this is it. 🤬

It wasn’t. It was one of those passed around rules that didn’t really exist like caffeine. Perhaps, men in your ward are realizing they can investigate for themselves? Our stake president requires bishops and counselors to be clean shaven. I love him but it’s dumb. 3
Tacenda Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 Lol, I think that many on this board are more on the unique side, not your cookie cutter members like in a lot of wards I've been in. Loving this wild side of all of you, haha!

I have noticed more slowly over that time. What is significant now imo is younger men wearing rather full beards rather then neatly trimmed ones. I believe that has been a general fashion trend for about five years. Not my preference, give me a neat beard every time, not looking like someone decided not to shave for a few days or weeks or long enough to grab and pull or collect food. Oh! That’s the best part of having a beard and mustache......food storage. Eat now, save some for later. Mine has come and gone over the decades. My roommate and I had beards at BYU when I was a freshman, but the next year they were verboten. No matter what I do it keeps growing back. I heard that some real men use a hammer to drive the hairs back through their cheeks and then bite them off on the inside as a more permanent solution. I might have to try that. I have had similar experiences.

This came to me this conference. They are all wearing suits. I know it is to put out a professional/reverent? image. But I really don't understand how the only way we can be reverent is in a dress code. That very little of who the women (and men) are comes through. Power color ties and suits. Is this what we are asking of our leaders? That we need to see it look like this to know we are being led properly? I don't even know what I'm saying, I'm trying to articulate what I find sad about it, but I don't think I hit the nugget yet. Kamala Harris almost always wears a suit. So do Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi. And AOC. Remember the Democrat Ladies in White at the State of the Union address? Who are the trendsetters? Just curious to hear some remarks Cut it, no problem. I would even shave it complete. That would be no sacrifice for me. Long...depends on how long and if I could thin it. My hair is so thick it was increasing levels of pain of my headaches when I had it down to my hips. The difference was so noticeable when I got it butchered, I have never grown it out since (before that it was cut extremely short and then see how long I could get it before the tangled drove me mad, cut, rinse, repeat). So I would likely have to pass on a calling if they wouldn’t take my excuse or allow it to be shoulder length. Now I keep it very short to stay cool while sleeping. Even with thinning it out, it is like wearing a hat. Given the years it takes to grow long hair, cutting it would likely be very hard for someone who has never done more than trim split ends as I know many women do. Edited October 20, 2019 by Calm 1

Maidservant Posted October 20, 2019 Posted October 20, 2019 2 hours ago, mfbukowski said: Sisters would you cut your hair or grow it long for your callings? Just curious to hear some remarks There was a time when I was younger, I would have offered any sacrifice or obedience, as I understood it. I think the answer would be 'no' now because I understand better what obedience is and it does not mean, doing what someone above you said just because they said it. And that sacrifice of integrity (including our relationship to our bodies) is not sacrifice, but a sin. And, in my opinion, uniformity is almost always a sin (except I do not describe things as sin, but if I were going to; rather, I would say now, unhealthy). My hair is extremely long; I don't want to lose that. But I have never gotten those second ear piercings I would have once liked to have, for artistic reasons. Because it was at the time that I did what I was told and felt that I was righteous for it. Now I just don't care and can't be bothered and I'm not sure my head energy wants metal in it, so it's not a big issue for me now. Let's see what the future brings. I already wear clothes I don't want to be wearing in order to keep the rules (and cover garments), but I probably will some time soon change that . . . . when I have the time to change anything about myself, this is also not number one priority, working on far more important changes, so my outfits come far down the list, so I just go to default, because I know when I do make the change, it will take a lot of personal energy to maintain it in the face of those who won't appreciate it (and whose body it isn't), and I'm going to need to have the energy of bravery and energy to articulate myself in order not to feel, well, horrible (judged, and perhaps in some company, harmed). I simply feel better the less I wear. And I like my shoulders and they prefer to be bare. But . . . oh well? Another lifetime? But sometimes I just wish it wasn't a Whole Thing that I have to rearrange the whole universe and my apparent identity and the sense of virtue (not actual virtue) in order to wear shorts and a tank top. So comfortable!!! But NOT THIS THOUSAND YEARS in the bloodline I entered. Grrrrrrr. 2
