Dubious Intel on New Youth Program

The new Youth Program is being tested and the testing areas I know of are in Central America. Also, full disclosure, this is still from the testing and may be adjusted before final implementation so I cannot guarantee that this will be the same.

I only got a few details:

• Youth meet twice a month during the week.
• One of the meetings is analogous to a current mutual activity.
• The other meeting is meant to be a more in-depth activity or service project or career introduction type activity.
• The focus will be more on home-based development and encouragement of personal religious devotion.
• Campouts and other outdoor activities are still encouraged and the Young Women Program will also lean more in this direction.

I am trying to get a copy of the new handbook but I am not sure if that is going to happen. Take it all with a grain of salt but thought you might want to know.

How did the beta version you looked at stack up to Nehor's dubious intel?

That's on par with what was rumored -- all youth programs become more like Activity Days.

I didn't look at it that closely.

The thing I'm not sure about is the twice a month mutual.  I think there are two conflicting ideas at here.

The first is the desire of church leaders that membership in the church be a blessing and not a burden for members.  With that in mind twice a month mutual would seem to be a good idea.  Many youth leaders are young, going to school, raising families, etc.  Life can be a difficult juggle at times.

The second is the concern among general leadership that the youth, since the change to twice a month ym/yw on Sunday, are not spending enough time with their leaders.  Personally, my youth leaders were my examples of how a priesthood holder should carry out his duties, so I can understand this concern. 

My impression has been that the frequency of mutual will be left up to local leaders.

My wife is working on the project.  She shares very little and I don't feel it appropriate to share very much of the little she's told me.

there is no program.   the youth leaders have to come up with all the ideas and hope for the best.   The same youth leaders have to fund the program from their pockets because the church is saving money for a rainy day.

This is pretty close to what we do in our ward (activities, service, career nights) except that we meet every week and are still putting focus on scout advancement.

I wonder if the twice a month thing might be because of the location.  I hope, for the sake of my kids, that they'll still encourage leaders to have the youth meet every week where it is practical to do so.

I'm hopeful that frequency will be left up to local leaders.

My daughter has just started the young woman's program and she is already kind of bummed that she only gets to have Young Women's every other week on Sunday. I imagine that scaling back girls-only activities to only being once a month would be even more heartbreaking. 

There is a benefit that comes from being around good leaders, but there's a benefit in forming meaningful friendships with your peers as well - especially in places outside of Utah where you and your small group of friends are the only members in your school/town.

Youth with inactive or disinterested families......what about them

Agreed.  I would hate to see the number of weekday meetings cut back.  

Also, logistically, planning on every week is better.  The one thing I hated about doing Activity Days was the "no more than twice a month" mandate.  There was constant questioning on whether we had a meeting this week, people were more likely to forget there was a meeting, and anyone who missed a meeting missed a full half, or even all, the meetings for the month.  Plus longer-term projects were not feasible because there was too much time between meetings.

According to Bro Douglas Holmes of the YMGP, worldwide the 5th Sunday in September will be used to introduce the program.  There will be a face to face broadcast in November led by Elder Gong.  He mentioned that currently moms with kids in the programs are responsible for 470+ requirements for Duty to God, Faith in God, and Personal Progress.  He said the new program will be radically different since all those are going away.  He didn't give any more details in the training meeting this morning.

Ok now I understand why sister so and so successfully breezed through child rearing in the church program and I failed.  

Not everyone is blessed with such noble organization skills to be able to handle all the requirements for righteousness

Only if they aren't having their own family time.  Inactive and disinterested families...less likely to be following the Church's programs, I suspect.
