I think you’re misunderstanding 6EQ. He’s misguided, but he’s not anti-Nelson.

Hard copies are much more likely to be looked at if unfamiliar with something.  Easier to ignore or delete a link than to toss a gift a friend gave.  And probably somewhat easier to hand out if face to face...at least it would be for me though I suppose someone might spam people they aren't that good of friends with without feeling strange about it.

 In no way does starting out with one hard copy prevent friends from writing up an intro email DN sending friends links.  More likely to do it once the ice has been broken with the first attempt as well.

Which is why Costco hires all those free sample ladies. A taste in the mouth is better than a link to a website.

We had big problems with the internet connection at our chapel so Sis Gui and I watched from home. The bishop asked everyone to power off their phones and tablets, but that didn’t seem to help

I think that’s the first time I have heard Sis Nelson talk. We were intrigued by Pres Nelson's 5 requests of the youth. We were trying to remember the last time such specific requests were made.

2. Make a weekly sacrifice of time to the Lord, for three weeks in a row. “Let Him know that you want to be part of His youth battalion — more than you want anything else,” he said. “For three weeks give up something you like to do and use that time to help gather Israel. Anytime you do anything that helps anyone — on either side of the veil — take a step toward making covenants with God and receiving their essential baptismal and temple ordinances, you are helping to gather Israel. It is as simple as that.”

3. Do a thorough life assessment with the Lord, perhaps with parents and a bishop, to ensure an individual is firmly planted on the covenant path. “If you have wandered off, or if there are some things you need to let go of to help your mind and heart be more pure, today is the perfect time to change,” he said. “If you aren’t sure how to repent, talk with your bishop or your parents or both. They will help you experience the joy that true repentance always brings.”

The prophet urged youth to “please do not stay off the covenant path one more minute. Please come back through true repentance now. We need you with us in the youth battalion of the Lord. It just won’t be the same without you.”

4. Pray daily that all of God’s children might receive the blessings of the gospel of Jesus Christ. “You and I are living to see, and will continue to see, Israel gathered with great power. And you can be part of the power behind that gathering.”

5. Stand out and be different from the world. “You and I know that you are to be a light to the world,” he said. “Therefore, the Lord needs you to look like, sound like, act like, and dress like a true disciple of Jesus Christ. Yes, you are living in the world, but you have very different standards from the world to help you avoid the stain of the world.”

If i misunderstood you I apologize. I thought you were complaining about Pres. Nelson wasting money by handing out physical copies instead of focusing on digital copies.

I spent today away from social media. I decided if President Nelson thinks it's a good idea for the youth to fast a week from social media, it's a good idea for me too

I don't know if teenagers are different today than when I was a teenager, but I can only see all the ways that having a bunch of LDS kids handing out "For the Strength of Youth" pamphlets could go wrong.

IF just one tenth of one percent result in some action on the part of a non-member towards Christ, it will certainly be worth it.

I like the 7 day fast from social media, we may try it as a family - adults included.

I'm guessing there isn't a number that is low enough to make it not worth it...

As for the "seven-day fast", this is one of those things where I think critics get set on auto-pilot and just reflexively look for ways to mock and deride anything the Prophet or other leaders do.  Technology addiction is becoming a huge problem.  And I say this as one who is both addicted to technology and who has to forbid my employees from using cell phones during work hours.  They literally have to lock them up in a secure locker, and the anxiety some of them feel for the first few weeks is incredible.

That being said, I also think that LDS can go a little overboard on this and turn some good advice to the youth into a COMMANDMENT FROM GOD TO EVERYONE, thus saith the Lord.  As with so many things, good sense probably lies somewhere in the middle.

I'll also add that the problem with the 7-day "Social Media Fast" is that it is probably way too extreme.  I would be surprised if most youth (and many adults) could even do a 7-hour fast.  He should have talked more about the signs of addiction and how to moderate use.  Just trying to go cold-turkey for seven days is probably going to be futile for many people.

This could be something worked on with leaders where they help the kids work out a program to work up to 7 days.

My wife Facebooks a lot, I don't, neither of us tweet or anything else. I am on message boards a lot. Only app on our phones is the LDS Gospel Library and I use that for scripture and lessons, my wife still lugs around the heavy stuff. Unlike almost everyone else I see, if we go out we are talking with each other, not looking at our phones.

Going off of message boards for me for 7 days will be rough, especially since I own and moderate one. But I do have other mods that can step in.

This 7-day fast from social media did not come at the best time for school teachers. By the time school starts in August, the teenagers will have forgotten about "the fast" and be back to normal.

In fairness to Scott, I don't think the social media fast includes accessing church websites at church.
