Do you pick dandelions on Sunday?

When I woke up this morning, I noticed about ten dandelions that had popped up during the night. I immediately dug them out (roots and all) to prevent those yellow petals from going to seed and blowing all over the yard. I do this every day and as a result my lawn has minimal dandelions. I wondered if I was still active LDS, would I wait until Monday and risk them going to seed or would I pick them. What would/do you do?

Pick them. Heck, I make dinner, do the dishes, what's the difference, or is it the problem of being seen working on Sunday?

As long as you are not intentionally disturbing your neighbors or they you, what does it matter?

Pretty sure as long as you were not going to use them to start a fire you are exempt from being stoned.

I'd wait,  but then if they just sprung up overnight I would have no worries that they would be spreading seeds before Monday or maybe even later.

Dishes and dinner are different because you need to eat and because as soon as you walk out of the kitchen that plate has multiplied 10 times!

I'm convinced that when I walk to the backyard and then return to the front yard the dandelions have multiplied 10 times.

Again, or simply split the difference and *put* the ox in the mire by combining your dinner with the makings of a dandelion salad.

Two birds. One salad. No stoning.

I'd get my sprayer, and nuke them all in the morning - like I am going to do.....

I can see that. Down here in AZ we really haven't had a problem with dandlions like we did in Utah, but other weeds...we are convinced the weed killer (chemical) and the weed killer (flames) just makes them grow better. We tried yet another weed killer on Saturday and I hope it works.

I leave the dandelions either way because, who cares?  I mow 'em off anyway.  I suppose they spread but I don't pay enough attention to my yard to care.

There are probably hundreds in my back yard. As long as they're not in my garden space I could care less. I do sometimes garden on Sunday. But none of the heavy-duty ground breaking stuff. Just weeding and watering. I don't think of it as work. It's what relaxes me. 

I also watch nature docs on Sunday as I cook. Sometimes a kids movie.

I'm a heretical Mormon apparently

And that's the biggest reason I don't weed on Sunday. Weeding is not relaxing to me. Cleaning the bathroom would come long before weeding for me.

Well to those of us who are looked down upon and have dandelions, "mowing the weeds" is probably a bit of a subjective conclusion here.  To me, they're mowed.  To my neighbors, I'm sure we need to some work on that.

I try to avoid yard work on Sunday unless there's no alternative. It's not a big thing of course so I don't think it matters that much. But I find the small things matter in terms of our example to our children who may not pick up on nuance well.

Hah.  You remind me of my neighbor when I first moved in (10 years ago).  An old tell-it-like-it-is lady.  I'm actively weeding the yard, because we just moved in and it was a mess then.  She's pulling off in her car, slows down rolls down her window (I had met her before only briefly).  I was like "Sweet. she's going to say something and we can learn more about each other".  She yells out, "you need to weed your yard" and speeds off.

That's what I was doing.  Some neighbors you just can't please.

My husband would nuke/poison the dandilion. Me, I like to pull it by the root, or any weed for that matter, by the root. Hate the chemical route.

You dug them out with a shovel? So you left little holes around your yard? Or did you fI'll those holes in with new dirt? Did you already have some good dirt stored somewhere or did you have to go buy some? And did you just leave it as dirt or did you plant something in the new dirt, like some new grass seed, maybe? And did you already have that or did you have to go buy it? 

I don't usually feel like I am doing yard "work" unless I use some tools other tHan my hands or when I take my truck to go get a new load of dirt or barkdust or any other lawn materials, and I try to avoid causing others to do yard work on Sundays as well.

You didn't ask me, but the way I have done it, is fill the dandilion with some water from a hose to loosen the root and then pull it out. It doesn't leave much of a hole. But my yard only had a few, probably because my husband uses weed and feed all the time.

One of the most effective chems for dandys is 2-4-D. However, even the amine formulations like Trimec, need to be sprayed when temperatures are less than 85 F. So spray first thing in the morning in AZ!

P.S. It is also most effective on days other than Sunday....

Pulling a hose around the yard is what I would consider yard "work" and I wouldn't usually do that on a Sunday unless I thought they couldn't make to Monday without more watering.

That is a good tip for pulling weeds, though. I might try watering the whole yard with my lawn sprinkler system before pulling weeds the next time I do that.

I really like that I have few expectations for what "must" be done on a Sunday regarding yard work etc. But sometimes I just really, really want to be outside. If the mood strikes me and I just want to mow, I mow. I get on my riding mower and enjoy the sunshine. It becomes leisurely and even a therapeutic activity instead of a "must-do" to cross off my list.

So if picking danelions provides you a little outdoor therapy time because it's something you want to do, and not something you feel compelled to do, I'd say go for it.
