Thinking Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 I'm curious to know if general authorities have a certain amount of vacation time that they are allowed to use. Does anybody know? Thanks.
smac97 Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Just now, Thinking said: I'm curious to know if general authorities have a certain amount of vacation time that they are allowed to use. Does anybody know? Thanks. My sister's FIL was previously an Area President and presently working in the Church History Department. Based on what I have heard from my sister and her son, the short answer is yes, GAs are given time off. IIRC, the amount of time is neither particularly stingy nor generous. Thanks, -Smac
rockpond Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 I can't comment on general authorities but I can comment on what I know from my family members who have served in these full-time callings: Mission President - no time off except for P-days (and down-time on p-days is severely limited/interrupted) Temple President - can take time off and away from the temple if another member of the temple presidency is able to cover. There always has to be one member of the presidency in the temple.

There always has to be one member of the presidency in the temple. When the temple is shut down for maintenance the temple presidency doesn't have to be there. So, for example, the Salt Lake Temple is shut down for two weeks in January and two in July every year. The presidency could use this as vacation time. 1
Scott Lloyd Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Yes, but as a practical matter, some work through it, fulfilling speaking assignments and such. I don't think you could fill a role like that without regarding yourself as on call 24-7, 52 weeks a year.
rongo Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Area authorities are not general authorities, and they still have their "day jobs." They are akin to a stake president, but over multiple stakes. General authorities receive a stipend from the Church, and work full-time for the Church. Part of their benefits is access to a ranch, similar to Philmont in New Mexico, with amenities and activities for family. A sister in my previous ward's parents are in charge of the ranch, and have told us stories about various GA's and their families. It seems to me that in general, July is a big month for GA vacations. They are allowed time off or away from their GA duties for "vacation." 2
Bob Crockett Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 (edited) All of July (or August; I have forgotten). However, they are often called upon to speak in the congregations where they attend during that month. Edited October 5, 2016 by Bob Crockett 1
Duncan Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 As an aside I was wondering if members of the auxillary presidencies work fulltime for the Church? So like that Brian Ashton and Joy Jones, Linda Reeves are they at Church HQ all day every day or do they work at a job and do that calling on the weekends? I was wondering what would the Sunday School Pres. do all day every day? 1
rongo Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Auxiliary presidency members aren't paid Church employees. Only FP, Q12, and Presiding Bishopric, as I understand it.

Boanerges Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 I don't know, I'm pretty sure the Sunday School and YM presidencies are full time and I don't see why it would be different for the female auxiliaries. Those sisters do travel on behalf of the church, some of them visited our are a few months ago and had a very rigorous meeting schedule over a few days in our stake and surrounding stakes.
Jeanne Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Well heck..this thread makes me appreciate Wally World...I get about 2 weeks a year plus personal time. I never thought I would say something so nice about Walmart. I hope they do get time off...families need them and life is short. 2

They don't. My former mission president was general young men's president, and he still had his "day job." When people complain about the nepotism and Wasatch-centricism of the general auxiliaries, that is one big reason for it. They have to be local people that you aren't moving to Salt Lake from Connecticut or Belgium. General authorities are different --- they do work full-time for the Church in every sense, so compensation is needed. 2

Being a GA is not something you can just not think about on your downtime.

There always has to be one member of the presidency in the temple. No rest for the wicked and the righteous don't need any. Mosiah 5:2 2 And they all cried with one voice, saying: Yea, we believe all the words which thou hast spoken unto us; and also, we know of their surety and truth, because of the Spirit of the Lord Omnipotent, which has wrought a mighty change in us, or in our hearts, that we have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually. 1

And what about MOTAB, when they are on tour worldwide? Who pays for all that?

Calm Posted October 6, 2016 Posted October 6, 2016 (edited) He doesn't post much, so someone could PM him, though I hope they only ask for vague info and not specific unless they want to share ant reimbursement for company trips or similar stuff. Edited October 6, 2016 by Calm

Not just CD sales, but proceeds from ticket sales to concerts when they are on tour. Admission is not free, as it is for Salt Lake City events. And it's not cheap. Also, donors contribute money to fund the choir's activities (I'm not referring to tithing here; this is donated money earmarked for the choir and Orchestra at Temple Square. It is done through LDS Philanthropies) Spouses or guests may come on tour, but they must pay their own way. I went with the choir last year to the East Coast and this year to Europe, not as a singer but as a news reporter. And I've covered the choir for years. You say it didn't used to be that way. I don't know that it was ever not that way. Edited October 6, 2016 by Scott Lloyd 2

None of the auxiliary presidencies are full time callings. They are part-time non-paid positions, like stake president or Area Seventy. I cover the Sunday School presidency, so I know. Caveat: In times past, General Authorities have served in presidencies of general Sunday School and Young Men, but not currently. Edited October 6, 2016 by Scott Lloyd

Caveat: In times past, General Authorities have served in presidencies of general Sunday School and Young Men, but not currently. Wow. That's a heavy church load to carry along with working full time. I wonder why they aren't paid. Obviously the church doesn't have a problem with having employees, both ecclesiastical and non-ecclesiastical. It sure sounds like a huge burden and with the growing international church it seems like a fully time employee/General auxiliary presidency member would be better able to serve if they were full time. Also, it would allow for much greater diversity in an international church for leaders to come from other areas of the world/country instead of needing to keep them all local to the Wasatch front.
