Tucson Temple

I'm trying to place which other building it reminds me of. I want to say the Capitol Building, but I'm not sure that fits entirely.

Either way, it's a pretty rad design.

Not that this is a surprise, but it really is a wonderful fit for Tucson's architectural style.

I've seen a mosque or two that looked quite like this (minus the statue)

I agree, and am reminded of the Ismail Samani mausoleum in Bukhara, which apparently evokes even earlier Zoroastrian temples.

I really like the dome. Is the dome part of the celestial room? I'm assuming not, but it would be cool if it was.

Growing up my Dad taught me that LDS temples resemble the temple in the Bible. Why are there so many different temple designs (I think the architecture is super cool!) but none of them resemble the ancient Jewish temple in Jerusalem?

Is this just a drive-by, or will you be sticking around awhile?  Are you on a break from school, eager to use what you just learned in Bible study to try to (de-)convert all of us eeeeevuhl Mormons? ;):D

(Sorry; whenever I see a post like this, I can't help but ask such questions: Must be the cynic in me! :()  Do you really want to make a fifteen-million-member Church and its leaders accountable for what "[your] Dad taught [you]"?  If so, why?  If there's a difference between what your Dad taught you and what you observe, why not ask him about it?  Also, something the Apostle Paul wrote comes to mind (see 1 Corinthians 13:11).

Did your dad also teach you about the architectural format of the Arad temple?

Hi there,

No I'm just curious, I realize that what my Pops taught me may not be doctrinal, just his take on it.

As for your Corinthians scripture are you implying that my question is childish?

Seriously though, if the LDS church is "the restored church" why are the temples not patterned after king Solomon's original temple with the Old Testament specifics?  If you restore something that means to make like the original.

It's a gospel restoration, the fullness of the gospel,  not a building restoration.

So why doesn't the "gospel restoration" include the levitical priesthood laws and rituals described in the OT to be performed at LDS temples?  Again, restoration means to make like the original. These "temples" don't resemble the one described in the OT.

Not restoration of the Law of Moses as practiced in the Old Testament. Restoration of the law fulfilled by Jesus.

Matthew 5:17 is a good start.

This is pretty basic stuff so I feel like you are trolling a bit, especially when reading your other comments.  This isn't a really good place to come and tell Mormons they are following a false God.  That's much better received in person. :D

I don't think your going to get anywhere with this one.

Looks like Tucson.  Hopefully, there will be no fights with the local residents about the height of the thing along the lines of what happened with the Phoenix Temple.  The practical benefit of the dome seems to be in that arena since it seems most objections begin with the height of a steeple.

The Levitical laws weren't the originals.
Genesis is the original.

Excellent question.

JS tells us that, as part of the Restoration., there indeed will be a final sacrifice by the Levitical priests before the coming of Christ.
" then shall the sons of Levi offer an acceptable offering to the Lord" D&C 13:1

Sacrifice to Be Part of Restoration

It will be necessary here to make a few observations on the doctrine set forth in the above quotation, and it is generally supposed that sacrifice4 was entirely done away when the Great Sacrifice5 [i.e.,] the sacrifice of the Lord Jesus was offered up, and that there will be no necessity for the ordinance of sacrifice in future; but those who assert this are certainly not acquainted with the duties, privileges and authority of the Priesthood, or with the Prophets. The offering of sacrifice has ever been connected and forms a part of the duties of the Priesthood.6 It began with the Priesthood, and will be continued until after the coming of Christ, from generation to generation. We frequently have mention made of the offering of sacrifice7 by the servants of the Most High8 in ancient days, prior to the law of Moses;9 which ordinances will be continued when the Priesthood is restored with all its authority, power and blessings.10

As I understand, these will be of the appropriate ancestry, and possibly the involvement of a red hefer.

So, do you know about the Arad temple?

Our modern sensitivities would not be able to withstand the sights and sounds and smells of an OT sacrifice. I hold to the idea that the sacrifice of the sons of Levi will be that of a broken heart and a contrite spirit, but I am willing to be corrected.

No, not your question, necessarily, as much as your approach to it.  True, even in my advancing years, I still seek my dad's advice and perspective, and I find them valuable.  That said, he reared me to think for myself, to formulate my own approach to questions and issues, and to go my own way in resolving them.  "What would Dad do?" or "What would Dad think?" certainly are two data points, perhaps large data points, in the consideration of such questions and issues, but they aren't the end-all and the be-all.

A beautiful temple. Only downside is being there means you are in Tucson. :vader:

If I were an Arizona resident, I would feel a great need to opt for an occupational option which would allow me to spend my winters in a place like Tucson, while spending my summers in a place like, say, Flagstaff.

Summers and winters in Mesa among the many citrus trees and swimming pools is a happy medium.
