Nephites! Yea Or Nay?

Nephites - Yea or Nay?

  1. 1. Did Nephites literally exist (outside of Joseph Smith et al.'s imagination)?

    • I think yes - and their literal historical existence is essential to the "Restored Gospel"

    • I think yes - but their literal historical existence is immaterial to the Restored Gospel

    • I think not - but I still have confidence in the LDS Restored Gospel

    • I think not - and the absence of evidence for Nephites undermines the claims of the LDS Church

What say ye?

Probably an attempt by a critical non-member to get those members who have lost faith in the divine authenticity of the Book of Mormon to make their views known in the hope that a seemingly pervasive spirit doubt is becoming the new normal in the church.

Dingdingding...we have a winner!

Breeding disunity is a popular passtime for some.

Don't you think it is amazing that the "Old World" for the most part was ignorant of the American continent?  Despite the fact that Europeans were trading as far away as China and Japan?  According to the Book of Mormon, God explicitly stated that He purposely kept the "New World" from being overrun by other nations.  Keep in mind that there are thousands of ruins under deep cover of impenetrable jungles.  I feel very confident that there are many written records waiting to be uncovered throughout the Americas.  Archaeologists can barely keep up with cataloging the digs (in many cases taking decades to make proper assessments).  And these merely are small scratches on the surface.

Continued from post # 2: A rather easy thing to do here since this is a gathering place for many opinionated members who hold unorthodox views.

I know they existed too.

The Book of Mormon is amazing book. Why don't you share a scripture from it that speaks to you in my flood this thread with the Book of Mormon thread five?

Hi Five Solas, It's good to see you back around these parts. I say number, 1 it's historical and essential. I'm looking forward to meeting Nephi and discussing his sail to the New World as well as the Brother of Jared about their trip over. I have my own ideas on routing and what type of boat Nephi sailed. I always knew in my heart when I was an EV that Christ had come to America and somehow we fit into prophesy about the whole House of Israel, the Lost 10 tribes and the blessings given to Abraham and Jacob and his sons so when the missionaries came to the door with the Book of Mormon I practically yanked them into my home and grabbed the BoM and started reading.

D&C 3 Nevertheless, my work shall go forth, for inasmuch as the knowledge of a Savior has come unto the world, through the testimony of the Jews, even so shall the knowledge of a Savior come unto my people— And to the Nephites and the Jacobites and the Josephites and the Zoramites through the testimony of their fathers-- ...And for this very purpose are these plates preserved which contain these records...that they might know the promises of the Lord, and that they may believe the gospel and rely upon the merits of Jesus Christ, and be glorified through faith in his name, and that through their repentance they might be saved. Amen.

D&C 2 Behold, I will reveal unto you the Priesthood, by the hand of Elijah the prophet, before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And he shall plant in the hearts of the children the promises made to the fathers, and the hearts of the children shall turn to their fathers. If it were not so, the whole earth would be utterly wasted at his coming.

Yea.

Kind of a silly poll, but we're all entitled to our silliness.

Aw come on it's a bit of fun. It makes me want to read more BoM and get better acquainted  with the people of the book. As a convert I recall the OT people better than the BoM people.

I do not think so. To many improbable situations and logical errors to make it historically factual.

Exactly what the atheists would say about the Bible. I presume you don't believe the Bible is true?

I have heard this many times but no one seems able to provide an example.

And we still have the problem of the witnesses who never retracted their testimonies. Now that is a hard nut to crack. A few even confirmed it again on their deathbeds in front of their kids, friends, and spouses. What to do?

History is replete with improbable situations and logical errors.  This does not make it counter-factual.

Do you know that I am descended from five Roman Emperors?  The earliest of them was Vespasian.  Yep, he's my 100th GGFather.  Actually, I don't know how many generations separate us, but regardless, I'm one of his descendants.  That is improbable.  But it is a fact.

For all I know, you're descended from him, too, and we're cousins!  :D

Wow 13 voted for the last one. That's surprising for a Mormon board.

You might have noticed that we seem to have a generous sprinkling of MINOs and former members.

The biggest mistake anyone can make is thinking that "Mormon" has the same definition online as it does in real life.

I suspect that it is more important for those that disagree with the believing stance to have their opinion counted than for the typical believer, thus results in a self selecting poll will always be skewed.

According to the members section, there appear to be officially over 10,000 board members (542 iirc pages with 20 names each). There are 51 votes.

The poll informs us only about those 51 posters, not anyone else.

There are more options than just atheism vs fundamentalism.

Let me know when the first Nephite museum opens.
