... bunch of dirty hippies. Let's take the beard back!!!!

Uh oh. I feel a beard revolution may be forthcoming.

Let's hope it's a respectful revolution by those who will be called into leadership positions.

I associate beards with ZZ Top, Duck Dynasty and slackers in lumberjack shirts on the streets of Portland, Oregon.

Still a few hippies and hipsters using beards as a statement.

Now who wants to be associated with any of those.   :acute:

That WAS the reason it was implemented... but the reason for the ban in the first place is no longer around... so why should it still be in place? That's the question.

Perhaps you missed a key word... associated.

Stigma. It takes another revolution to overcome it.

The church could quietly break the policy. One beard in General Conference... Or one of the 12 growing a clean cut beard for a little bit.... Boom. It would all change.

But who associates a clean cut beard with a hippie today? No revolution needed... the stigma is already gone.

I'll grant you that a long beard like duck dynasty might, but not a well trimmed beard.

We have a policy against long hair for male missionaries... but we don't cut it ALL off because of it.

Who CURRENTLY associates beards with hippies? Are there still any hippies in the 21st century?

There are a lot of old hippies still 'truckin along'

Tell me something mormonnewb - it appears from your posts that you dislike just about everything about Mormonism, so why are you one? seriously, I really would like to know.

Beards as a symbol of "hippies" has passed and it has regained it place as a marker of manhood. Throw out your razors, brothers.

I've been without facial hair for exactly two years of my adult life -- the same two years I had a black name badge on my chest. For the vast majority of LDS men who aren't currently making the choice to enrol themselves at BYU, there is simply no need to 'bring beards back'.

I personally think it is a very silly rule.  No beards because of hippies?  Seriously?  That was FIFTY years ago!  A nicely trimmed beard is perfectly acceptable in our society now and it has been for a long time.  That being said, it is the rule at BYU and no one is twisting anyone's arm to go to BYU.  Seriously, if you don't like the rules, there are more than 2,600 other Universities in the United States to choose from.

Yeah, so shun the school and let the weirdos who agree with those things go there.

This reminds me of an experience I had whilst studying in America. Pres Hinckley visited our university to speak to LDS students and friends. He began by saying how nice it was see so many Latter-day Saint youth doing what he wished all would do: staying away from BYU.

We should follow the Hutterite pattern. When a man marries, he grows a beard. Single men remain clean shaven. Works better than a ring.

And then how do we stop women hitting on all the married Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and certain Asians???

i've gotten a different impression. where are you getting those assumptions from?

I love President Hinckley.

He tends to like to work through the unwashed masses. As I've been told, He used a semi-literate 14-yo country bumpkin to restore the Gospel. If that is true, He certainly can use a college student to restore the beard.

He does like to work with the weak things of the world. He counsels them and calls them to do things but He does not need their counsel or their advice. I doubt Joseph Smith would have been given his calling if he had approached God with a theological system in the Sacred Grove and told God Joseph needed to share it.

Now if someone were called by God to end the "Beard Ban" at BYU more power to them. If it is people who want it to end and want to pretend they are called by God to do so then they are guilty of priestcraft and will certainly burn in hell.

The Church of Jesus Christ is not a democracy. We don't get to advocate to change the status quo. If the Lord wants something to change in  His kingdom he will reveal it to the people He has out in charge and given authority and responsibility to. Not to a stupid kid at BYU. That is how he works in all days and at all times: through his chosen, to whom He has given authority. That has always been the case. He is a God of Order. Right now we live in a time when He has MEN on Earth who have such authority to receive any necessary revelation to change the order and workings of the Kingdom. You don't have to like it, but that is the case.

Next topic, please. If people want to change the status quo in ANY other organization, go for it. But the Church is not any other organization. It is not a government, club, social organization or frat. You or me have no say (LITERALLY NO SAY) in how it works. Nor should we.

Are we really putting the no-beard policy of the honor code up as revelation from God that only God can change?

I see absolutely nothing wrong with calling attention to a policy so policy makers might take another look at it.

This is BEARDS! Not the Priesthood of God.

I think it may be unfounded to confuse BYU with the Kingdom of God.

I don't really care about beards. If men want them then they can have them.

A thread I read on another non lds related message board before reading this one was about trends people were hoping to see end.

I, like others, see this as a fad. Oh men will always have beards and they always have had them. I know many men who don't wear them to be in style.

But reading this thread after reading that one I see this is a protest to participate in a fad. And that's why no one much cares to join the guy and why it won't get anywhere at BYU.
