Duncan Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 An inmate possessing a firearm is a bit shocking. do you know why Joseph was in jail?
Scott Lloyd Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 An inmate possessing a firearm is a bit shocking. Not under the circumstances. Legally, Joseph was under protective custody of the state while awaiting court proceedings, though the state dismally and shamefully failed in that duty.
David T Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) An inmate possessing a firearm is a bit shocking. My understanding is he was in protective custody that night the Jail. It was understood his life was in danger, and a goal was, in theory, to protect his life from known would-be-assassins. Not your standard inmate. Edited February 11, 2014 by David T
Tacenda Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Calling Sheila.Steve Benson (ugh!) has posted online a much more thorough outline and description of this case. I don't want to link to it (I'm on my phone anyway) but if you get a chance to read it, your expertise on it would be great to see posted here. The title is:"Details of criminal fraud case against Monson & co-provided by Tom Phillips" The HMRC tax page explains the process: " Charities or CASCs take your donation - which is money you've already paid tax on - and reclaim the basic rate tax from HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on its 'gross' equivalent - the amount before basic rate tax was deducted. Basic rate tax is 20 per cent, so this means that if you give £10 using Gift Aid, it’s worth £12.50 to the charity."In other words, the UK pays the charities (i.e., LDS Church) out of its coffers as a plus up to what someone has already donated. Now, a member could pay 8% and allow the UK to pay the other 2% of their tithing. It appears, however, the LDS Church did not explain to most members that they need only pay 8% tithing under the Gift Aid relief.British Mormons have chimed in on this. Some of these are involved in the case, so I won't list names until I can assure it won't breach case rules. One former Mormon Bishop wrote: "In my experience most Bishops don't tell the member they can get away with paying less in tithing because the Church claims back the difference. Many members pay the full 10% & the Church gets the extra [percent]." British member said, "I was never told that I could claim relief on my charitable giving, only that the church can claim that extra percentage on my donation. Isn't that withholding information? ...under Deed of Covenant. I paid 12% on Gross."Not only is the LDS Theocorpocracy under investigation for evading payment of taxes on the moneys it paid to UK mission presidents, but it would appear it defrauded its member out of a tax benefit from tithing it received by giving members false information about its own history and about the tax relief laws governing its accounting. This is not about persecution against beliefs. This is about defrauding people and governments. As more information makes its way out we will see Mike Purdy and President Newsroom (the only prophet that speaks these days in the halls at the church offices) spin and spin as they twist in the fraud winds. Scott Lloyd Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 My understanding is he was in protective custody that night, not as a criminal penalty. Thanks for the corroboration.
T-Shirt Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 (edited) When Joseph first went to Carthage he was staying in a hotel where he was relatively safe. He had not yet been placed under arrest. It wasn't until a false mitimus was produced that he was to be arrested for treason and expected to be taken to the jail. The Governor knew the mitimus was false and that the charges were false, but he refused to interfere. Justice Robert F. Smith told the Governor that the reason for the warrant to take Joseph to jail was in order to protect them as he claimed they weren't safe in the Hotel. All of this, of course was pure bunk. The only reason they wanted him in the jail was so they could kill him. If the Governor had any spine, he would have intervened. The Governor later told Joseph that he hoped that he would be acquitted, but that he could not interfere. The Governor knew that many of the Carthage Greys were intent on killing Joseph, but he insisted that they were disciplined. It was requested that the Governor put the prisoners under the guard of a militia of another county, but he refused. Eventually he left town leaving the prisoners in the care of the very men that wanted to kill him. Joseph was in jail illegally on false charges of treason. The destruction of the press was a civil matter, and Joseph was willing to pay restitution if the City Council's act was found to be against the law. He never should have been in that jail in the first place. Edited February 11, 2014 by T-Shirt 3

Just saw it. Oh great, they're bringing out the personal anecdotes. Also, may I point out that it would not necessarily amount to a member paying 12%. The 2% is the government returning money that has been taxed, so it essentially makes it so the member is paying on their gross income (unless they're paying 8% because they know gift aid and prefer to pay on their net, or maybe they're paying 12% because they feel they should pay on their gross). The church website in the UK explains gift aid to the members, and that it allows their contribution to be more valuable. It sounds like Steve would have it say "This means by the way that only you have to pay 8% if you prefer to pay on your net income." Do you know why the church wouldn't do that? Because it's extricated itself from the whole gross vs. net vs. surplus debate a while ago. Jeez Louise these people are stretching. (Not a criticism of you Tacenda, thank you for posting that info). 3
MichelleD Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 Tacenda, thanks but I don't think that's it. Can I post the link here? I don't want to break any rules. Let me know and I'll attempt to post it from my phone if I can.

The Nehor Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 He illegally incited a mob to murder him. How does one legally do that?
Thinking Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 what riot? the riot that destroyed the press of the Nauvoo Expositor.
Avatar4321 Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 the riot that destroyed the press of the Nauvoo Expositor. By carrying out an order of the city council? He was charged with treason, not with the destruction of the press. 1
The Nehor Posted February 11, 2014 Posted February 11, 2014 the riot that destroyed the press of the Nauvoo Expositor. That was not a riot. That was a police action. 1
