ALarson Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 A friend of mine who no longer attends church just sent me a link in an email regarding this. Is this legit? I won't post the link to it on here, but I'd love some more information if anyone knows more about it and if this is actually happening. Here's what it states "Thomas Monson issued court summons to answer allegations of fraud". If someone has actually accused him of this, they can't seriously believe anything will come of it.

This appears to be something Tom Phillips has been working on for a while. It does appear to be legitimate. The Fraud counts are for knowingly misleading by professing belief in what are presented as (and what are alleged to be known to Monson as) a few key historical falsehoods (no death prior to 6000 years ago, Joseph and Hyrum were killed because they defended the book of Mormon, Book of Abraham is literal translation of papyri, etc) in order to coerce tithing money. Saints Alive Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Then there is the whole mission president tax evasion thing.

P.S.: U.S. Courts just love hearing litigation regarding religious truth claims, and I'm sure the same can be said for their British counterparts! Bet the court can't wait to hear this one! halconero Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 This is the "surprise" that Tom Phillips had planned. He just said it today. Here's a copy of the summons for those interested. I think he's pulled the wool over his own eyes if he thinks this is going to be the straw that breaks the Church's back: 1
Kenngo1969 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 What a maroon.Is that you, Bugs? ("Ehhhh ... What's up, Doc?!" )
Popular Post juliann Posted February 4, 2014 Popular Post Posted February 4, 2014 Maybe this will set a precedent to sue politicians for their lies to get tax money back! 16
thesometimesaint Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Is that you, Bugs? ("Ehhhh ... What's up, Doc?!" ) I'm not that smart. 1
Kenngo1969 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) Just noticed the address on the summons. "East Temple Street" actually is Main Street. If Phillips's counsel can't even be bothered to get the Defendant's address right, it makes me wonder how effective s/he'll be overall. Edited February 4, 2014 by Kenngo1969

I can't find news about this anywhere on google. Probably just a made up document.
ALarson Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 Maybe this will set a precedent to sue politicians for their lies to get tax money back! Well, I could certainly get behind that!
David T Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 (edited) I don't think this is legit at all. I can't find news about this anywhere on google. Probably just a made up document. It was just released an hour ago, and posted by the individual, a former Stake President, who'd been claiming to be working on a 'crushing blow to the church' for months now. This is an actual legal attempt to get Monson on the stand in the UK. Edited February 4, 2014 by David T

Probably just a made up document.Nope, just searched and this is for real. Some are saying that other charges are coming soon from Germany and France. I still cannot believe that anyone believes this will go anywhere. Also, many are speculating that this is why the new essays have been written and released as the church has known these charges were coming for some time.

I'm sure that's as true in Germany and France as it is anywhere else.
The Nehor Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 That's it? This is his exciting move?Bwahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha!
thesometimesaint Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Too bad there is no such thing as criminal idiocy. 2
halconero Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 I'm close friends with an ex-member of the church. We're still very friendly, polite, respectful, and not all of our conversations surround the church. His reaction to this was "I can't describe with words the underwhelming feeling I'm experiencing right now." He told me that the reaction is split on the exmormon forums, boards, subreddits. Some are using this to herald the destruction of the church, while the other half are feeling more than a little let down. No unhallowed hand can stop the work. 3
MiserereNobis Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 If only Salt Lake City were its own country, like Vatican City, and President Monson the head of state, then you all wouldn't have to worry about any of this. That's actually one of the reasons why the Popes in the 19th and early 20th centuries pushed so hard for temporal independance -- they didn't want the head of Christendom to be subject to the whims of secular governments. Can you imagine a "State of Deseret" in downtown SLC? 1
escott3564 Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 That's it? This is his exciting move?Bwahahahahaahahahahahahahahahaha!Agreed, Nehor! Doesn't the UK also abide by freedom of religion? They don't require everyone to be Catholic even though that is the prevalent religion there. If they did, the missionaries wouldn't be able to preach in the UK. I don't see how there is anything fraudulent that can be proven. The Church attorneys will be all over this. I don't think it really stands much of a chance of going anywhere, except possibly inconveniencing President Monson in having to travel to the UK. Hasn't he been a little more frail physically? Could he make that type of a trip? 1

Some will be crafty and cunning and still come to naught and some of those hands will be attached to a body with a brain the size of a walnut and entertain the saints with their clown antics. 2

Just to clarify, the UK has a state religion, the Church of England, and it's not Catholic (the whole Henry VIII divorce thing...). 9
ALarson Posted February 4, 2014 Author Posted February 4, 2014 I hope this doesn't get much media attention as that could actually do some harm. Is there anyone on here who knows UK law?Can President Monson really be forced to appear or can the church send someone younger and in better health? I'd imagine they've named President Monson because he is the CEO of the corporation, but what if he's physically unable to appear?
Sleeper Cell Posted February 4, 2014 Posted February 4, 2014 Failure to attend [appear in London before a Magistrate’s Court] may result in a warrant being issued for your arrest. Among other problems, it might be a tad difficult to serve such a warrant in Utah. On the other hand, the Tower of London is far more classy than Liberty Jail. 1
