Scott Lloyd Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) British reverse month and day compared to the US. Their way actually makes more sense going from smallest unit to largest.Yeah, but ours follows the more common (in the U.S., at least) textual format, i.e. "March 14, 2014." Avatar4321 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I once asked a church apologist why the church doesn't just give a more honest picture of its foundational stories when teaching investigators...to which he replied..."Don't be silly Craig, No one would join the church if we did that"... Seems like its coming back to bite 'em in the Arse So which Church did this apologist belong to?
Popular Post Avatar4321 Posted February 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted February 5, 2014 Has anyone every heard anyone argue for the payment of tithes because the Nauvoo Expositor needed to be destroyed for printing lies about Joseph Smith? Or any of the other points?I was always taught to pay tithes because God will bless me. And in my experience He does. 7
Scott Lloyd Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Church ought to embrace it. Let the Kangaroo Court proceed, Tom Philips will single-handedly discredit the whole antimo movement, and the smart ones realize this and are flaming him over at the mormon discussions forum. Mormon Think is already done as a legitimate web site.(Bolded emphasis mine.) You know an anti-Mormon move lacks merit when even that lot discredits it.
InactiveLDS141 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 So instead of presenting the First Vision, the Book of Mormon, and the Plan of Salvation, missionaries should teach investigators about discontinued polygamy, what Brigham Young said in a sacrament meeting in Salina, UT in 1856 about blood atonement, and possibly missing or not papyri? That's rich.Respectfully, since I have been out of the LDS Church for half a decade and really out of touch with her missionary practices for rather much longer: in a world where people interested in ANYTHING probably WILL use search engines to look up info on that topic, and where they therefore WILL BE EXPOSED to anti-LDS material: would it not make sense for the Church to have some materials available which broadly address some of the more-common issues brought forward?Sorry to derail the thread. Catholic converts spend a year going through RCIA and while catechetical materials are put together on a Diocese-by Diocese basis, centered around the Catechism of the Catholic Church--in regions where there is a lot of anti-Catholic sentiment, especially, materials which address matters such as the Inquisition, venal Popes, thorny Scriptural issues, and so forth, are part of the lesson plans. There is even a Catholic Apologetics Bible to help address some questions. A 'biggie' nowadays is to address the clergy abuse scandals.I still suspect the British, and any other courts, will ultimately decline to be the soapbox for what looks like a jab at your Prophet and the Church. Again, sorry this is going on.
why me Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 So instead of presenting the First Vision, the Book of Mormon, and the Plan of Salvation, missionaries should teach investigators about discontinued polygamy, what Brigham Young said in a sacrament meeting in Salina, UT in 1856 about blood atonement, and possibly missing or not papyri? That's rich. I think that it is amazing just what exmormons and critics wish the lds church to do. It becomes a little off centered after awhile and unrealistic. I know of no faith that teaches the complete history of their religion. History is written by historians and historians are more than free to write about the lds faith and its history.
The Nehor Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 So which Church did this apologist belong to?The Church of our Beloved Reptilian Overlords and Celestial Light Inc. 4
Scott Lloyd Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Respectfully, since I have been out of the LDS Church for half a decade and really out of touch with her missionary practices for rather much longer: in a world where people interested in ANYTHING probably WILL use search engines to look up info on that topic, and where they therefore WILL BE EXPOSED to anti-LDS material: would it not make sense for the Church to have some materials available which broadly address some of the more-common issues brought forward? On an official basis, the Church has already begun to address more fully some of these issues in the Gospel Topics section of its website. Unofficially, there are apologetics organizations that have been doing this for quite a while now, the most prominent of which is FairMormon. Others include "The Interpreter: a Journal of Mormon Scripture" and, until about a year and a half ago, the Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship.
Popular Post koawinter Posted February 5, 2014 Popular Post Posted February 5, 2014 First post here. And the only reason I found this site is because of this story that was originally on WorldNews on Reddit. My dad always said that you can leave the church, but you can't ever leave it alone. And what's interesting about this is that there are 3x as many subscribers on exmormon (reddit again) than there are exchristians (for their reddit). This man is not only bitter, but he has become obsessed with dismantling others beliefs. Also, I've noticed a lot of individuals who think for some reason that the church is directed only by men, and not apostles or prophets who receive revelation that is similar to how Joseph Smith received revelation when he was told NOT to continue the translation of the Book of Lehi. I just believe that God works will not be frustrated and that he knows whats happening. This will not work, and this man will continue down his own destruction. 7

Well, not to burst your bubble but I've asked my local ward several times, to please not send the missionaries up here, since I know they are co-ordinating with their ward mission leader (they told me they were) and lo and behold last week here they came again. We had an "interesting" discussion. So who's not leaving who alone?????????

rpn Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 The address of the administration building (which is where the leaders have had their office) is 47 East North Temple Street. So yes the street address is incorrect, but it isn't main street.
canard78 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 I don't even know where to begin with the errors and unfounded speculation evinced so far. I live in the UK, I'm an active Mormon and I'm a criminal lawyer who has worked for over 25 years in Magistrates' Courts and this is very unlikely to go anywhere. -SNIP- Thank you. I'm only sorry I can only give you 1 rep point. Fantastic post. I hope you don't mind, I've copy-pasted it on a few other places (linking back to your original post). I think it's really important that your voice of reason is heard more widely among the babble of amateur lawyers ("I watched a season of Law & Order and in one episode..."). If you object to that, let me know and I'll go and remove it from the other boards. 3
Gohan Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Well, not to burst your bubble but I've asked my local ward several times, to please not send the missionaries up here, since I know they are co-ordinating with their ward mission leader (they told me they were) and lo and behold last week here they came again. We had an "interesting" discussion. So who's not leaving who alone?????????Missionaries come and go in an area, as you well know. If the area book isn't kept up-to-date - specifically notes like DNC on the ward directories being transferred to the new ones - then after a few months or so, you're probably going to have a new set of elders knocking. I made a special effort to note the DNCs in one of my areas, and after six months there I was still getting chewed out by new ones that I'd find. And since I wasn't - and am still not - the most Christlike person when it comes to that, I tended to bite back if they gave me crap for something I had no control over. If that's what your "interesting" discussion with the missionaries meant, you're probably not going to help your own case. If not, I apologize I suppose. And, so my post isn't completely off-topic, I'm hedging my bet on this backfiring tremendously and MormonThink losing a lot of their "credibility" along with it. 1
CMZ Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 (edited) Initial random thoughts:Sounds like the person Phillips really should be calling to trial is Joseph Smith, not because Jospeh Smith was a fraud (he wasn't), but because he's talking about stuff that mostly happened well before President Monson was even born.I have also been wondering lately if there'd be a time soon when a prophet or apostle was threatened with imprisonment.Wouldn't his suit be against any religion? I'm pretty sure 100% of all religions out there believe in things that can't be demonstrably proven. And typing this up really quick I don't have access to a gospel library but numerous LDS writers (I believe including general authorities) have said that the creation was very likely to have been longer than 6,000 years. I believe McConkie said each "day" of Creation was whatever length of "time" was needed to complete those specific tasks.President Monson is a prophet but he also does not like to make a big deal about it. From the time of his calling as an apostle (and maybe even as a young bishop then mission president) until now he has always seemed to me like he'd be perfectly willing to step out of the limelight but that he was also not going to shirk his duty and turn down calls. Everything I've ever seen of him, in person, at General Conference, at the press conference announcing him as the new prophet, at basketball games, etc., confirms this. I believe (somebody correct me) that he is also the President who has asked the most that prayers be said for him in being able to fulfill his calling. Edited February 5, 2014 by CMZ
rongo Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 Tom Phillips is no longer a member, right? I didn't think so, but then, I'm not sure.
Kenngo1969 Posted February 5, 2014 Posted February 5, 2014 The address of the administration building (which is where the leaders have had their office) is 47 East North Temple Street. So yes the street address is incorrect, but it isn't main street.Right. What I was getting at is that technically, "East Temple Street," to which the summons is addressed, actually is Main Street. (In fact, I don't have a reference, but it used to be called "East Temple Street." Just sayin'!
