Duncan Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 What do you think of the phrase you sometimes hear around the Church that every member is a Mission President? I think meaning you are a little critical of the local missionaries, how the mission is run etc. Thoughts?

halconero Posted July 9, 2013 Posted July 9, 2013 I've heard it. I can see both sides personally. Sometimes people want run the missionaries in their area as if they were the stewards over them.I do think though, that there is nothing wrong with counseling the missionaries in the area where you live, especially if you're the Bishop or Ward Mission Leader. Letting them know what's going well, what is not going well, giving them tasks (go visit Brother So-and-so, do some service here, take this member to a lesson, etc). If a missionary really screws the pooch on a lesson or obedience issue, I don't think it's wrong to talk to them about it.There are certain topics, among them companionship issues, morality, etc that should primarily be left to the mission presidents. The idea though, that members in a ward should be completely hands off with regards to the missionaries is a damaging one to the work. The Elders and Sisters are wedded to the ward. They counsel with it, but are not run by their "partner" in the work. 1

And yes, that was the implied meaning of it.

I played mission president once, and I am.sure the missionaries were annoyed, I felt justified as I was not imposing my mission rules.

We had members in my mission area that would call the mission to report we were breaking the 'rules', only to learn that doing such and such wasn't against the rules in our mission like it was in the mission of whoever was calling. We even had members calling to report a rogue missionary, when it was actually a missionary who had finished his mission and then returned to visit and happened to have been shopping at the mall on a *gasp* Thursday! 2
