The First Presidency has announced that an online system has been created to allow members to send the names of family or friends to the temple, where those names will be placed on the prayer roll. Requests to place a name on the temple prayer rolls can now be made by visiting any temple’s information page and clicking the prayer roll link. Requests can also be made through the “Temples” section of the Member Tools mobile app (beginning August 25, 2020 for Android and September 1, 2020 for iOS). Once the names are entered, they will be sent to that temple (or to the nearest operating temple if that temple is closed).

I submitted some names and voila! it worked! You could always do it online, just email the specific temple and ask them to do it and they'd do it.

The Jews also have a prayer roll at the synagogue.

What I am wondering, with all these high tech advances, is Can the prayer roll now be kept on a thumbdrive for our prayers?

I sleep till noon or later these days, so easy to beat me if something happens after 6 am to probably 2 pm most days. Not an early riser here. :)

I want it on an actual scroll myself.

I would assume they would still print them out. Maybe a regular temple worker could find out for us.

Mind you though who is going to be praying over these names?

I'm assuming they'll be sent to those temples that are now doing endowment sessions.

After the names are submitted online for the prayer roll, does someone cut out the names on paper and put them in the little name satchel? Or, do they keep them electronic and just slide an iPad into the name satchel?

I was thinking of practical limitations on space if too many requests came in

Do they allow you to submit usernames from Internet discussion forums if you don't know their actual names?  There are few posters here I'm worried about...

:) That's pretty good!

I'm curious about this. Is there any reason to think that the method of placing the names on the alter really makes a difference?

For that matter, how is a person whose name is placed on a prayer roll and prayed over in a temple blessed any more than a person who is prayed over by a parent at the dinner table? The concept of the prayer roll doesn't make a ton of sense to me. It seems less personal. Is it a super powered prayer because it's in the temple? Is a temple prayer more powerful than a prayer accompanied by fasting, or a blessing, or a standard nightly prayer. Or is placing a name on a prayer roll more of a cultural tradition?

I wouldn’t think so, I just like the image of a scroll on the altar.

The names are placed in a bag, right?  So I don’t see what difference what they are written on would make, whether individual strips or on a sheet full of emailed names.

I think it is effective in the sense of the community coming together to pray for someone. I love the idea as I think feeling one belongs to our community is very important and this is something that can help strengthen the bond, but don’t see it as more powerful than other forms of prayer, but just another way to communicate caring and seek out God’s will for us and add sacredness to our lives.

So would you view a prayer in sacrament meeting for a specific person or purpose to be equally beneficial from the community building perspective?

It might be considered a more powerful prayer because it includes the combined faith of thousands of temple patrons in all temples praying for the individuals whose names are on all the the alters of all the temples.

So more like praying for a person or specific need in General Conference because more people are involved and joining in faith?

I find the hierarchy of prayers to be a strange thing. Where does a child's prayer fall into the hierarchy?

Child's prayer- God listens and is pleased with the child. God's will be done.

Mother's prayer- God listens and is pleased but God's will be done.

Father's blessing- God listens and is pleased but God's will be done

Priesthood blessing (essentially a prayer with anointed oil)- God listens and is pleased but God's will be done

Apostolic Blessing- God listens and is pleased but God's will be done

Communal prayer in Church class, Sacrament meeting, or conference- God listens and is pleased but God's will be done

Communal prayer in the temple for names on prayer rolls- God listens and is pleased. God's will be done.

Does anyone really feel like one prayer is more powerful than another. If so, why? Is there a difference in the result of different types of prayers, based on their power level?

OR is it not about level of power at all, but rather about God giving multiple people multiple types of opportunities to be involved in prayer? If that is the case, should one type of prayer be considered to be higher/better/more effective than another?

I think prayer depends a great deal not only on those offering the prayer, but the one receiving it. What this means to them likely affects how beneficial the prayer is the most (outside of the Lord’s will).

But I see talking about the power of prayer through comparison of forms of prayer as somewhat illogical because I don’t see prayer working in such a fashion. The prayer of a small child given in absolute trust might be given more power by the Lord than a worldwide fast by Saints in the sense of achieving the righteous desires of the one who is praying and placing their faith and hope in the Lord’s hands.  Each situation is unique and complicated and therefore impossible to label that way.

Equally beneficial doesn’t logically make sense to me therefore as you are using it  It seems too much like approaching prayer as a formula.

And unnecessary in my view. Better to use the forms of prayer available to one as move upon by the Spirit and let the Lord act on those rather than worrying if the effort was enough or that somehow if we could just get more people working on it, the Lord will be persuaded to help where he resisted before.

Interesting thought. Something to consider though: Typically, when you delete data from a hard (or solid state) drive, the data isn't actually deleted - it just marks locations with existing data which can then be written over later. But if you don't actually overwrite it with new data, the old information is still present. So, unless we do like the government and require zeros to be written to every sector of the device before reformatting it and then adding new names, we would end up with chunks of people who are just constantly being prayed for over-and-over in each session.

There might be some other logistical issues with flash drives as well - such as how to tell if there is actually anything on the drive to begin with (would the person officiating need a way to verify data is present on the device before beginning the prayer)? Or, on a possibly related note, how do you ensure that you have got enough temple workers who are tech savvy enough to make use of the new high-tech solutions?

Besides, you can print a lot of names on a piece of paper: especially if you use a very small font.

Or, what if technology continues to make advances and we are able to store the names of everyone on the entire planet onto a few strands of DNA? We could just pipe that into a new vile daily and then every person in every temple could be praying for everyone on the planet on any given day. I suppose something like that might be possible - it just seems to be out of alignment with the smaller, personal nature of the event.
