Besides, you can print a lot of names on a piece of paper: especially if you use a very small font. 

Or, what if technology continues to make advances and we are able to store the names of everyone on the entire planet onto a few strands of DNA? We could just pipe that into a new vile daily and then every person in every temple could be praying for everyone on the planet on any given day. I suppose something like that might be possible - it just seems to be out of alignment with the smaller, personal nature of the event. 

Yes, we could print names in microdots to save space.  The problem I foresee is that the new online guidelines will overwhelm the capacity of the two packets now used for the handwritten names, which are regularly replaced (is it two weeks?).  We need a practical alternative.

Those considerations are very nice, but what about very specific liturgical prayer?  Why do they exist?  And, even when there is a good deal of leeway in the content of some prayers, they often have very specific openings and closings, along with some very specific actions.  These include baptism, confirmation, ordination, setting apart, sacrament of the Lord's Supper, washing, anointing, healing, endowment oaths & covenants etc.

I agree.

I ask in part because I've noticed in the past how some members seem to dismiss certain types of prayers. The idea of offering a rote prayer, for example, may get a chuckle from some as being ineffective, unless of course they are talking about prayers/ordinances in which we've been taught to be very specific- baptism, sacrament etc. I've even noticed some members scoff at the idea of prayer groups, or even the response "I'll pray for you" when the individual doesn't really even know the needs of the person being prayed for, as if such a prayer would be ineffectual without the specifics. In any case, I'm of the opinion that God uses prayer to help us be thoughtful of others and him. IMO a prayer is a prayer is a prayer so I don't get excited just because it is a "worldwide day of prayer and fasting" or a praying for those whose names are on temple roles. I see those as good things, but not some kind of ultra-powerful "We really mean it" kind of prayer of which God will take special notice.

I've been checking my ldstools since the announcement but haven't found it yet.    They must be either rolling it out, or I don't know where to find it?

A physical prayer roll is an integral part of the endowment ceremony. I don’t see that as changing. But then, I haven’t been to the temple to work my shift since it was closed several months ago due to the CCP virus pandemic.
