Our Bishop sent me a text giving me permission to have our own family sacrament meeting which we did. He asked that I report back to him after we did it, which I did.
The kids actually had a good time and all participated.

We are doing our little family sacrament after dinner.   It will be interesting.

We had the lesson from the Come Follow Me manual, then we did the sacrament and then watched the Book of Mormon Video that goes along with the lesson.
All my young grandkids seemed to enjoy it. Made sure they all had something to do.

Same. And I had the same experience as you yesterday each time I blessed the emblems.

It was nice to get a big chunk of my favorite bread and a big swallow of water.

Same again. I bought a loaf of sourdough rye bead for use in my own home and made sure to break it into actual bites rather than nibbles. When others asked how much water they should put in each cup in their homes, I told them as much as they wanted to consume.

Now, the real question is, for how long? This whole panic is not sustainable. How long should classes be suspended? What else are we shutting down; theaters, supermarkets, factories, non-emergency care, government offices with high foot traffic?, banks?  At what point should a business owner defy the government "mandate" to stop operating before he/se faces bankruptcy?

Last year more than 34,000 people died of the flue in the US alone. Some 60 million suffered the flue and recovered, just like that majority of people with the COVID-10. Some 70,000 people have been infected and recovered from the Corona Virus ALREADY. This is a flu strain that produces the SAME symptoms as the H1N1, H3N2 and the influenza B strains. Even if you get vaccinated against the flu, you can still get it. Because these viruses mutate so quickly that scientists are always playing catch up. The risk factors are the same, the population at greater risk remains the same and precautions should be the same as with the influenza virus.

Notice that the media is fanning the flames and have nothing else to report. They seem invested is stoking the public into a panic and sink the economy and the country with it. I received an elite education in the former communist block and my paranoid credentials are impeccable. This media agitation is politically motivated. End of the story. Until the end of January there was absolutely nothing in the news cycles but the impeachment. Now Corona Virus. You would have thought that people were dropping like flies on the streets. All I see is a lot of agitation but very little factual information.

Diversify your news sources a little. I have been following the virus news since January. There is a lot of it. The idea that the US created a bunch of international news in nations across the globe for months to then spin it for political reasons is ridiculous unless you believe in a reptilian illuminati that controls everything in which case see a mental health professional.

You don't see the danger. Covid-19 is more lethal than influenza and no one has immunity so it can spread much more easily than a flu strain. Look at what is going on in Italy and will likely soon be the case across Europe and the United States:

https://theweek.com/speedreads/901695/seattlearea-hospital-italy-show-what-awaits-americas-health-care-system-coronavirus-surges

Those influenza cases you mention are still happening and flu season already takes the US hospital capacity to near its limit annually. Add in this virus that no one is immune to and there simply are not enough resources to treat them. Stretch resources too thin and you are left having to triage who lives and who dies.

Woman, 36 years old, two dependent children, no conditions making survival unlikely, she lives.

Man, 69, smoker, asthma, takes too much to save, he dies.

Woman, 75, without coronavirus comes in with heart condition that will require intensive surgery and a lot of attention, too much, she dies.

The purpose of distancing and shutting it down is not to stop the spread (impossible at this point) but to mitigate the damage by spreading out the cases so that we keep the number of infected small enough that those who get life threatening cases do not die because we just do not have enough doctors or enough equipment.

We are still in the early stages of this. While it is only guessing at this stage the estimated death toll in just the US is 200,000 at the low end and goes up to just under 2 million. That is in addition to the flu cases. That 34,000 who died of the flu begins to seem like a weak comparison. If you feel the business owner should stay in business at the cost of lives go ahead and state that outright but don't try to untruthfully cast it as a hoax or hysteria. There are parts of the world living our potential future. Denying that is wishful thinking. The threat is real.

Meanwhile we have a dullard at the helm spreading misinformation and lying repeatedly. According to him the virus is "under control". Idiot.

And then, there's this from Australia:     Greek Orthodox church says 'holy cup cannot carry disease', allows congregations to share spoon

Quote

Greek Orthodox churches across the country will allow congregations of hundreds of people to sip wine from the same spoon during mass because "the holy cup cannot carry disease," the Archdiocese said.

Greek Orthodox priests dip a spoon into a chalice of wine and place it into the mouths of parishioners, as part of communion during mass. The spoon and chalice remain the same throughout the ceremony.

A spokesperson for the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, Steven Scoutas, said anyone showing signs of illness should stay away from church gatherings.

"But once we decide to go to church, we believe there is absolutely no possibility of contracting disease from the holy cup," he said.

"We believe that no disease or illness can exist in holy communion, which we believe is the body and blood of Christ," Reverend Scoutas said

Do we just lack faith?  Or maybe we just need to go back to high-alcohol content wine instead of water?

I say none of the above.  I think we have the right idea, and it probably doesn't hurt that our prophet is a trained medical professional.  But after participating in a couple of meetings today using virtual conference meeting technology instead of meeting in person, I could get used to this virtual meeting stuff for church really quick.

Data mining algorithms  (SNV and NLP) showed that until January 22, 2020, some 80% of the news coverage was directed at the impeachment subject across all the networks. The percentage was lower for online media sources. So I stand on that statement.

The lethality of the virus has not been determined yet. You would need a significantly greater sample to determine that with a high degree of statistical certainty. As of right now some 60 people have died of the disease in the US. Based on last years influenza stats, you would need some 2500 death per month just to match the common flue death count from the 2018-2019 season (between 34,000 and 41,000). Since 1990, the median number of death by influenza is 39,000/year. So, your assertion that COVID-19 has a higher mortality rate or lethality is unfounded.

As to the competency of the handling of the White House of the crisis, your comment seems politically tainted rather than a statement of facts.

Just in the US. Other than the UK and Australia, the US political process does not attracts much attention elsewhere.

And I stand by my statement to diversify your news sources. Calling television news “news” at this point is a bit of a stretch. It is more akin to film critics arguing how many stars to give the latest hearing or whatever. The 24 hour news cycle continues to be a bad idea.

You do not understand how pandemics work. Of course the deaths are low now. The first death in the US was only two weeks ago. It is going to increase. Look at Italy. The first death in Italy was on February 22nd. Less then a month later their daily death count was 368 and there is no reason to believe that is going to slow. Iran reported 145 total deaths on March 7 and is reporting 853 total deaths today and they are probably downplaying the numbers.

Your statement about lethality is woefully ignorant. To test lethality you need to base it on how many people were infected and how many people died. Would you argue Ebola has a low lethality because the number of people who died from it was lower than other causes of death and ignore that fewer people caught it in the first place? I would be pleasantly shocked if the US has fewer than 2000 total coronavirus deaths by mid April and fewer than 20,000 by mid May.

The optimistic estimate is that around 100,000 people worldwide have been infected. Most of those are not far enough along to have seen whether they are fatal. Projections are around half of the world’s populations will get it in the next year. Your complacency is ill-founded. I am not suggesting panic is a good response but a lot of people are going to die and taking steps to slow the spread will save lives. The reality is almost everyone is going to know and care about some of the people who die. The US Surgeon General just said today that we are where Italy was two weeks ago.

Saying that the President has been saying objectively untrue things is not evidence of political taint. It is just true. I hate this post-truth world and I hope when we are done burying the dead that we will decide the whole concept was a bad idea.

In our stake, we are strictly following the social distancing and personal hygiene guidelines provided by both local and national health authorities. (Social distancing is not at all the same as quarantine -- which is why I'm at work this morning, in our parliament building, along with dozens of other workers.) We are also responding to personal requests from families/individuals regarding desired contact.

You live in a truly marvelous stake HT. My wife insisted our minister come over to help give her a blessing yesterday for an upcoming surgery she is having. He offered to provide the sacrament while he was there also to which my wife agreed. So between the sacrament, with the minister saying both blessings directly over the bread and water, and his hands on her head during the blessing, social distancing was out the window.

The risk factors are the same, the population at greater risk remains the same and precautions should be the same as with the influenza virus.

First, covid-19 is not a flu virus.  Coronavirus are known to cause the common cold as well as other well known diseases, such as SARS and MERS.  It is nothing like the H1N1, H3N2 or any of the other influenza strains.  The flu vaccine has nothing to do with covid-19.

Second, according to a study done based on the Diamond Princess cruise, the R0 (reproduction rate) was calculated to be about 2.2 (see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19545404).  The Diamond Princess cruise gives us an excellent example of what the virus does when there is little to no containment.  The seasonal flu, on the other hand, has an R0 of 1.3 (see https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19545404).  That means that covid-19 is more infectious than the season flu if left alone.  So the risk factors aren't the same.  Also, many of us have natural immunity to the flu or we have been vaccinated against it which gives some herd immunity to the rest of the population.  We have nothing like that for covid-19.

Both covid-19 and the flu grow exponentially (technically, they grow and then slow down once they have infected a large majority of the population)  But covid-19 has a lot more space to grow than the flu.  Right now, it looks like the US is doubling every 4 days (https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus#growth-country-by-country-view).  So, we'll have over 60 million cases in the US by the middle of May if the growth rate continues (which it will if we don't do any containment).

The case fatality rate (CFR) of covid-19 is currently calculated to be around 3.5% (https://ourworldindata.org/coronavirus#global-case-fatality-rate-of-covid-19).  I think everyone hopes that number goes down.  China initially had an extremely high CFR but now they are around 3.9%.

If the CFR drops down to 1%, then out of the 60 million cases, we'll have 600,000 deaths.  Even if the CFR drops down to .5%, we'll still have 300,000 deaths.

I agree the panic is going to hurt.  The world is going to have a hard time coming out of this.  But if we don't do things to stop the spread, we'll have a lot more deaths than the flu.

Just to reiterate the point and staying away from qualifiers. It is a verifiable fact that news coverage (regardless of political inclination) was focused on the impeachment proceeding, by far, until about January 22nd. You can access research with a credit card at lexisnexis.com

Second, let's not argue as to my qualifications in the medical field to render a measured opinion on the current situation. It will surprise you who I am and what I do but I will resist the temptation. The fact remains that using contagion and mortality rates across continents is faulty methodology. There are 100 other countries with higher mortality rates for influenza than the US year after year. Using Italy as a point of comparison would lead you to a flawed result. There are issues relating to population density, mode of transportation, vaccination rates, access to prophylactics and generalized use of universal precautions that influence the outcome of epidemics. Speculating or theorizing is a poor substitute for real science and statistical reality. Again 70,000 people have recovered already from COVID-19 in the US. Really assessing  how lethal this virus will turn out to be requires a bit more time. So far, there is no real evidence that it is more so than previously known strains of influenza based on the current (preliminary) mortality rates. Most of the data we have comes from China and its reliability is suspect. They are notorious for manipulating such data (e.g the avian flue and swine flue outbreaks in years past).

Here is a short, fairly informative and clear summary of the subject by a researcher that hopefully enlightens a few people. And would be my last post on the subject.

I am sure that is true about the impeachment but again, diversify news sources if you want to be informed. If you get all your news from watching CNN or Fox News you are going to miss a lot and get virtually no international news.

No one was arguing your credentials but it is kind of cute that you decided to share them without being invited. It kind of cute to see the old “I am secretly an authority on this but I am not going to tell you how” card and then duck out. A common internet parting shot to insinuate victory. Boring.

It is way too late to implement the measures Singapore did, the political will is not there to implement them, and the US public would be unlikely to obey those measures if they were implemented. Singapore was hit hard by SARs and has more of a culture of compliance. When their first cases popped up they quickly developed chains of transmission and relentlessly tested everyone. They quarantined everyone who they thought might have it on site and had test results in three hours. While they were tracking it relentlessly and identifying who had it the US at the same early stage did not even have working tests due to refusal to accept tests from the WHO, the CDC test being flawed, and draconian rules on test use that restricted it to only extreme cases and sometimes not even then. There was an overt effort to keep reported cases low by denying testing.

It is also worth noting that it is still not completely contained in Singapore. We will see how it goes.

As someone who is steeling himself for a pretty high likelihood of seeing one or more loved ones buried soon due to what I am complaining about I consider my comment morbid but fair. If it hurts some politician’s feelings that I said it then good. Maybe they will go cry in their room about how mean everyone is and those in positions of responsibility who are taking action to try to save lives can get on with it without interference.
