I know this isn't really an LDS topic but do any of y'all occasionally observe it?

When I lend something I say I lent it.  Otherwise I don't know much about what Lent is all about.

I admire your fortitude! I can't give up politics for any season! Too much is happening, and at the moment it is all fun and games. Namely, watching the clown show.  A laugh a minute!

Oh do tell.  What do I do without realizing what I am doing?  I observe Lent, you say?  Is this something I should Google for more information?

Ugh. it's depressing.  Not funny at all to me.  These are the people I have to choose from as the leader of our country.  Seriously.   No joke.  I'd rather just go somewhere else and do something else rather than engage in politics or hear those politicians speak.

No but I sometimes explain that the Word of wisdom is like a permanent Lent.

I taught at an Anglican school one year, and in the lead-up to Lent, the very devout principal called each staff member in to encourage us to observe the period by fasting from something. I told her I was willing to not consume any coffee or alcohol. I meant it as a joke, but she didn't get it and instead said that she was impressed, so I added that I would also refrain from all sexual behaviour too, thinking that would make my attempt at good-natured humour even more obvious. She told me I didn't need to do anything that extreme. At that point, I realised that, despite knowing my religious affiliation, she had no clue that we as Church members basically 'observe Lent' every day of the year, so I just left it at that.

I do wish you the best for the Lenten season!

At our school, students were banned from playing at recess during Lent, so it kind of just made us all cranky, including the teachers who were to enforce this rule. The kids were told to spend recess time contemplating their sinful natures instead. Not my favourite memory.

Gotta say my least favorite thing to contemplate is my sinful nature.

On an only slightly related note, I just watched a news conference with President Trump on the coronavirus. The news anchor on Fox had this very distracting black mark on his forehead. I only wondered for a moment before I Googled “Ash Wednesday” and learned that it is today.

Except that for me, it is no sacrifice. If the Church were to repeal the Word of Wisdom tomorrow, I would not have the least interest in those nasty substances.

I am not allowing myself any self-pity for 40 days. We'll see how it goes.

I would probably try a glass of wine at least.....just to see if I like it before the great feast in the Kingdom of Heaven where I hope to be offered it new with the Savior. :vader:

And I will give up my brain pills (which in most circumstances definitely fall under the Word of Wisdom) the minute someone heals my brain.

I agree that it is no sacrifice for you, then.  I, on the other hand, really enjoyed the taste of wine and beer and rum with Coke and several other mixed drinks, and coffee and iced tea and sometimes hot tea, so giving those up was a real sacrifice for me.

If those things are things you don't like anyway, you wouldn't be drinking them anyway, so it's really nothing to give up since you wouldn't be having those things anyway.

edited to add: and I was talking about drinks with the regular amount of alcohol in them.  I still drink beer and wine but only the very low or no alcohol versions, which are still okay to drink unless you're on a mission with very strict mission rules.

Oh wow......someone tossed in a derail grenade.

Yes, I do a lent observation. Lent is more about getting closer to God than "giving something up." You can give something up as part of your observance but the aim should be that whatever you give up brings you closer to God. Your example of giving up politics may well accomplish that purpose.

That would be you by quoting only that portion of what I said without connecting it to sacrificing some food or drinks like I was talking about.  :Lent is partially about sacrifice, as i understand it.

No, I think it was you stating unequivocally that low alcohol wine and beer are fine under the Word of Wisdom.

Do tell!

Um, beer or wine with any amount of alcohol are not OK to drink, mission rules or not.

You can expect to hear from Scott on that one.

You probably ought not vote, then.

Lent is the standard past tense of lend. This one time, Ahab is right. :P

What I’m triggered by is the outlandish assertion that near-beer is permissible under the Word of Wisdom.
