That's what Cecil B. DeMille did with his "Ten Commandments," with Yule Brynner and Charlton Heston eating the scenery.  And the public loved it.

Actually we could depict them as archeologists would according to time and place.  Israelites in Jerusalem about 600 BC can be well imagined based on what we know of their DNA.

Even if they didn't seem to paint themselves, the Egyptians did - although most of that seems to have been in the previous millennia. Nevertheless, thanks to the Egyptians we know very well what Semites looked like - they looked like Joseph in the amazing technicolor dreamcoat.... ;) To a lesser extent we can get some idea from Assyrian art as well.

I"m not a qualified critic of such things, but I'm feeling like you and I watched different things.  All I saw was cheesy, low-productions value, bad acting, and something that was really painful to watch.  Ah well, we're all different, I guess.

I think it's at least an improvement over what we've had in the past.  Many here (and I'm sure other members) seem to really love these and those people will be their audience.

They looked like Donny Osmond?

One of my favorite films is "Last of the Mohicans" (1992), which used actual Amerinds.

And is one of the few examples of the film being better than the book.

So you would have them exclude the book of Ether?

No, this is “from when I understand”, the “first” of a series of films. Was I mistaken?

But these are Book of Mormon videos, and would this include the Brother of Jared’s adventures. The comment I responded to included elements from the Book of Ether.

I understood this to be the “first in a series”, am I incorrect? I very often am, but I thought this film only covered the exodus for Jerusalem, and trip to the sea? Which, btw covers a whole lot of “ground”, so to speak, literally and metaphorically.

But that’s what we were talking about. We can’t wait to see these elements (cureloms and bees in a submarine) on screen. We weren’t referencing this particular video. We know this video alone is only about Lehi and his family. The Book of Mormon series videos will eventually cover everything from 1 Nephi to Moroni.

ETA:  Captain Moroni, of course.

Exactly like him.

Of course, if my quick mental calculation is correct, Mitt would have been a pre-teen when this painting was done.

I think that we ought to put our best foot forward in such a missionary effort, for the same reason that other churches should also do their very best:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=50_3J6Go5Ng&list=RD50_3J6Go5Ng&start_radio=1&t=29  .  It is less about us than it is about the real value of our efforts -- spending tithing money.

I once asked Jerry Johnston, Deseret News columnist and one whose literary acumen I admire, his opinion of Charles D i  c kens as an author. Jerry rattled off a few technical reasons why D i c kens could not be considered a good writer. Then, Jerry finished his sentence with these words: “and he’s one of the greatest authors who ever lived.”

I think Laman and Lemuel were attractive and charming ... to people who wanted to be attracted and charmed by them. ;):D   I think it all depends upon by whom, and, perhaps more to the point, upon by what, one wishes to be attracted and charmed.  You might be repulsed by something which "attracts" and "charms" me, and, conversely, I might be repulsed by something which "attracts" and "charms" you.  We're all "attracted" and "charmed" by whatever spirit we "list to obey." That's rather the way life in this fallen world works, I think.

True. To each his/her own. I think we can agree though that the actors thus far are not portraying their characters as either attractive or charming.  😄 Just to be clear, I don't equate attractiveness with handsomeness or beauty. Some of the most attractive people I know are neither handsome or pretty.  It's more of an aura or energy and  I want to spend time with them.

Good point, even though it does not respond to my objection that our Church has sponsored an amateur effort -- even if well-meaning or well-intentioned.  This is especially sad, given that we know so much more about the actual mise en scène of those first chapters than we do of the New World which comes later.  We should at least try to get it right.  We should also get first rate screen writers and cinematographers.  I see no evidence of any of that in this first installment.

I was under the impression that they are covering the entire Book of Mormon, in installments.

“We”, I not sure who the “we”, is? I only commented on “your statement”, as it relates to “this film”, concerning Lehi and his family. There is no “we” in anything I said, nor implied. So, you have kind of lost me at on this point and this post. Maybe a reread, of my comment would be helpful for you at this point, or any others who wish to continue to question both my comment, or purpose for it.

Of course not, I did not, nor was I trying to imply any such thing. I would both suppose and expect it to be in any future films, should the “series” catch on and reach the Book of Ether.

The Beni Hasan Tomb painting of a Semitic clan entering Egypt comes from the time of Abraham, so does apply to possible design of Joseph's coat.

However, the Assyrian reliefs of conquest of part of Judah does fit the Lehi period, even if from a century earlier.  Here are Jews taken captive from Lachish going into exile:

The Church isn't waiting to see if this catches on.  A decision was made and much of the filming has already taken place.

I believe “season 2” has already begin filming, or close.

edit: the second season already filmed and finished last June.

Cureloms and Cumoms and elephants were likely native to the New World. Bees were brought in the boats but there were probably only a few. Don't need many to restart a hive and it would be a bother to have 10,000 bees buzzing. The guy who drew the short straw and was assigned to the " flocks and herds boat " ...oh my!

Poor guy that was stuck with the bees in the submarine.

OK, but it would seem you both misread, or I miswrote a one or two line post. Maybe I should reread it, no...I am sure I was clearly addressing your comment, as to why it did not belong in the featured film.

Now that I am recalling the actual image (Captain Moroni being stern, tough, resolute, faithful - - -) it is striking how Romney's mug was disturbingly milquetoast and patrician in softness and privilege.  Not suited for the rough times the captain lived through.
