provoman Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 With the instruction from President Nelson, should we as members of the Church treat the nickname "Mormon" as derogatory or does context matter? How would affect usage of the name in tge public sphere or even in the workplace?
Popular Post MustardSeed Posted November 25, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 25, 2018 I still use it sometimes. My Protestant boss was chastised by an lds friend for saying Mormon and I think that’s a shame. i don’t like to add to extreme pc. But when possible I use the full name now. 5

How would affect usage of the name in tge public sphere or even in the workplace? I don't think he gave any instruction at all about taking or treating it as derogatory. I think the style guide refers to contexts for still using it. His counsel to us is to magnify the name of the Lord by using the commanded name of the Church, and by naming ourselves accordingly. This opens many doors on many levels. In General Conference he gave a couple of examples on how we can inform, educate and promote the name of the Lord when "Mormon" is used by others in our everyday conversation. 1
Prof Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 Often nowadays, people are easily offended. For me in this case, since I have used the term myself for over 50 years, I will take no offense by anyone else using it. 4

Popular Post pogi Posted November 25, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 25, 2018 If we are quick to take offense by it, it will quickly become a derogatory term. I hope we don’t let it get there. I have quite fond sentiments about the term, I hope that it doesn’t become soured by our own people. 5

President Nelson says that when we use the name Mormon Satan has victory and Jesus is offended: https://www.sltrib.com/religion/2018/10/07/members-offend-jesus/ “When the savior clearly states what the name of his church should be, and even precedes his declaration with, ‘Thus shall my church be called,' he is serious. And if we allow nicknames to be used and adopt or even sponsor those nicknames ourselves, he is offended.” Using common nicknames such as “Mormon church,” “LDS Church” or the “Church of the Latter-day Saints,” Nelson said, “... is a major victory for Satan.” I guess all the other Prophet, Seers and Revelators were not listening for the past 150 years. 🤣🤣😂 Honestly, and this won't be popular here, it seems to me that if this is the most important thing that has been weighing on the new Prophet's mind and he is ratcheting it up, well, wow, what pablum we get from the modern LDS Prophets. Storm Rider Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 I have generally felt that most groups that demand a new name or a new way of identifying them border on the obnoxious and far too self-important for my taste. Yes, I understand why using the whole name is good; No, I am not that interested that my non-Mormon friends begin to call me something else other than Mormon or by just calling me by my first name. 1
MustardSeed Posted November 25, 2018 Posted November 25, 2018 I love how we the people turned a soft drink into a devils beverage. Let’s not do that with Mormons

I personally dont need to be offended for Jesus. 32 minutes ago, Teancum said: I guess all the other Prophet, Seers and Revelators were not listening for the past 150 years. 🤣🤣😂 Or, perhaps they weren’t pondering/asking about this very specific issue. Don’t make this into an issue of incompetence, it’s not. Edited November 25, 2018 by pogi 2
Popular Post cinepro Posted November 25, 2018 Popular Post Posted November 25, 2018 (edited) I haven't changed my usage of it. If, sometime in my lifetime, I use the word "Mormon" (in reference to the church I belong to) and someone asks "what is that?" and I say "it's the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" and they go "oh, that church", then I'll stop using it. Until then, I consider language to be a means of communicating with other people, and that word is still the best way to identify the church I belong to. Edited November 25, 2018 by cinepro 6
JAHS Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 Is the label Mormon now or always been derogatory? It was, then it wasn't, now it is again. I think the church has established itself well enough in the world that we can now try to educate the world on what Christ's church should be called. 7 Therefore, whatsoever ye shall do, ye shall do it in my name; therefore ye shall call the church in my name; and ye shall call upon the Father in my name that he will bless the church for my sake. 8 And how be it my church save it be called in my name? For if a church be called in Moses’ name then it be Moses’ church; or if it be called in the name of a man then it be the church of a man; but if it be called in my name then it is my church, if it so be that they are built upon my gospel. 9 Verily I say unto you, that ye are built upon my gospel; therefore ye shall call whatsoever things ye do call, in my name; therefore if ye call upon the Father, for the church, if it be in my name the Father will hear you; (3 Nephi 27: 7-9) Or if a church be called in Mormon's then it be Mormon's church.
rodheadlee Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 No, I don't think so. But the problem is it's not very descriptive of what the Church is. I grew up Holiday Protestant and had traveled with my family through Utah several times on our way to Montana from So Cali. and I had no clue what the Church really was until I went to an exhibit at the World's fair in Spokane, Wa. 1
Storm Rider Posted November 26, 2018 Posted November 26, 2018 I think another angle to consider is how others outside the Church of Jesus Christ viewed the term Mormon. If the type of things said during Senator-elect Mitt Romney's run for president are used as an example, then the term has an unequivocal poor reputation for a label. If non using the name can change how people feel about members of the Church, then I can easily support it. 2

The church specifically stated that this is absolutely not about rebranding. I’m not sure I trust that but “ok.” For sure, people outside the church, both who sort of know about us and who know a lot about us think we are oddballs. We bring bring it on ourselves , so changing the name won’t help that part. I used to think that my friends were 100 percent cool with my mormonness. Then I got old and my friends got honest. 2

I’d say the problem is more actually that we don’t live enough in a way that people see us as Christian enough to maintain the nickname effectively and not continue to alienate folks! Or, at least, I don’t. Working on it 😕

In the old days I had no clue what a "Mormon" was, just that they worshiped some Indian saints, one named Moroni on the top of their temples. Between that and the lack of a cross clearly they weren't Christian. The change will help a lot and probably be shocking to many people that don't even know we have anything to do with Jesus Christ. 3

Comes under the heading of "compelled speech." "Mormon" has now become a trigger-word, causing the victims to run and hide, seeking a "safe space" somewhere. Canada even has a new law telling people not only what they can and can't say, but also what they must say.

Is it possible that we are not being given the full story? Is there a hidden agenda, or a substantive issue that we have not yet addressed in this matter? Because I am having a very hard time figuring this all out. I'm feeling that I just don't get it. That this whole matter is beyond my ability to deal with it as a practical reality. How does one actually implement the Prophet's request/admonition? As a practical matter. Am I now in league with Satan whenever I use the "M"-word?
