bsjkki Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 This is sad. We have 3-4 officers in our ward and they all come to church armed. It makes me feel better. We recently discussed active shooter protocols for primary teachers/kids and evacuation plans in emergencies. Preparing for an active shooter at church is not something I like to think about but it is necessary in our day. 2

I do think in today's world of mass shootings we as wards should prepare for what to do in an active shooter situation.

The basic options are run, hide, or fight. The Church counsels members who find themselves in an active shooter situation at church to "flee immediately if a safe path is available" (and to "not carry anything that could be mistaken for a weapon by responding police"). If escape isn't possible, they should "hide out of sight of the assailant’s view." And if that isn't possible, "as a last resort . . . fight back against the assailant. Use anything available as a weapon, and fight to incapacitate the person. If others are present, organize to defend yourselves and to attack the assailant." The best preparation for being on the receiving end of a mass shooting is to live the gospel. 6

osteotome Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 A police officer friend once told me if a shooter entered the chapel the best defense would be for everyone to engage him such as everyone begin throwing hymn books, chairs etc at him and subduing him. Having people packing would also help.

RevTestament Posted July 23, 2018 Posted July 23, 2018 This is sad. Unfortunately, the situation suggests that O'Connor wanted to make some kind of statement with this act. It suggests some kind of motive connected to religion. He knew he would be seen. Rather than do it when Miller was leaving home, he purposefully chose this very public religious place. I'm almost scared to learn his motive. This is a tragedy that will be bad news in many ways I'm afraid. My condolences to the families involved. 1

Sounds like the guy was gone before anyone had time to react besides someone who was right next to him: Quote Both men were on the east side of the chapel when the shooting began. White said he looked up and saw a man in a dark blue shirt leave through the chapel doors on the west side of the building. He remembered greeting O'Connor in the hallway before the meeting and that O'Connor had been wearing a dark blue shirt... Witnesses and police said O’Connor pointed the gun at another ward member who confronted him, then walked back through the chapel door, out of the Fallon South Stake Center...
