Breaking news ... http://www.cnn.com/2017/10/11/us/boy-scouts-will-allow-girls-to-join/index.html

Interestingly, the article says the decision was unanimous by the BSA board. I'm not sure how many seats the church has on the board, but it has at least one.

Starting to sound more and more like Mutual.  Maybe the church left a little too soon.

I am counting down the days until the church leaves scouts all together.

We just got a Friends of Scouts campaign email and I was shocked I felt a surge of anger about it, it felt like the ward was asking people to throw their money away.  I lost my loyalty to the program 20 some years ago as an Akela when I had to shell out ridiculous money for badges and getting anything extra as rewards or to help the boys bond with the program was completely out of my or my ward's reach.  Training costs were ridiculous as well, so I never did more than the basics...and I needed it big time.  (I had volunteered when they couldn't find a man for the calling...12 boys, including two ADD and a no experience leader who was much better with junior Primary).  My son had a wonderful time, but besides his first den mother (we were in the States at that time) and first scout leader, the rest could have cared less about the ceremonial stuff and just put their effort into the doing aspect (ocean kayaking, mountain climbing, winter camps).

And most members have no idea that none of the money donated to FoS goes to the ward.    My husband refuses to donate to FoS anymore.  He'll donate to help boys in the ward with scout costs if needed, but not to the organization itself.

And the costs are insane!  The last time we were at the scout office we bought a book and some of that iron on sticking stuff for badges and it cost us $50!

I don't have any issues with girls joining the cub scout programs. The soils we learn in scouting would benefit girls as much as boys I'm curious how campouts would work since there is no way boys and girls will be going later.

I am surprised to hear about financing issues. It seems that these have started since they started compromising on standards. I could be wrong though.

If it what a girl wants to do ...I am all for it.  What most young LDS girls/young women need in the church (IMO) is more choices.  Doesn't bother me...I think it is great..but I was under the assumption that scouting was almost/near done away with.

Here is the church's response. Our girls are not joining, no surprise. But the tone seems to be fairly reasonable. I don't see this affecting much in my ward.

"The Activity Days and Personal Progress programs of the church have long been in place to meet the needs of girls and young women in these age groups, and no change will be made in church programs," said LDS Church spokesman Eric Hawkins. "We recognize that the desire of the BSA is to expand their programs to serve more young people in the United States. The church, too, continues to look at ways to serve the needs of our youth worldwide."
