Doesn't bother me...I think it is great..but I was under the assumption that scouting was almost/near done away with.

Not yet. So far the only programs we have officially parted ways with the BSA on are the Varsity and Venturing programs, and I don't think those are very common. For example, in my whole life, I have only ever been in one ward that actually had a Venture Crew. It's possible that those changes were a signal about the church's eventual complete exit from the program, but I suspect that (should it ever come about) is still a ways off.

And most members have no idea that none of the money donated to FoS goes to the ward.    My husband refuses to donate to FoS anymore.  He'll donate to help boys in the ward with scout costs if needed, but not to the organization itself.

Same here.

Perhaps a survival move to bring in more registrations, preparing for the time when the Church pulls out altogether as a chartering organization. That's bound to have a potentially devastating impact.

From today's Deseret News:

Quote

The Girl Scouts of the USA criticized the initiative, saying it strained the century-old bond between the two organizations. Girl Scout officials have suggested the BSA's move was driven partly by financial problems and a need to boost revenue.

I agree with the Girl Scouts.

Hmm. I guess I will have to stop putting news item in the News section where they belong.

The reality is that if you want optimum visibility for your thread, you don't hide it in the "In the News" section. I rarely go there anymore.

Scott and I agree... the planets must be aligned!

p.s. Scott -- cool news that you broke with your article on Vincenzo de Francesca's hand-written testimony.  I loved playing that movie for people during my mission!

This coming from a man who writes news stories in a newspaper. ;-)

We've discontinued for a few years now, and I had the same experience when I was in charge of awards for the cub scouts. I couldn't believe how much money they wanted for badges, pins etc. It seemed like a big money making biz, maybe they want to include the girl scouts to recoup some money that FoS has lost over the years. I think the downfall for me came when I found out how much executives of the boy scouts company make. http://www.ocregister.com/2009/08/07/national-boy-scouts-explain-16-million-salary-for-top-exec-2/
