Popular Post Bernard Gui Posted January 7, 2017 Popular Post Posted January 7, 2017 (edited) A choir member takes a principaled, positive, and moral stand to explain why she will sing at the inauguration, citing the example of Black American vocalist Marian Anderson. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865670560/Mormon-Tabernacle-Choir-member-explains-in-Facebook-video-why-she-will-sing-at-Trump-inauguration.html?s_cid=Email-4 Quote “What I’m trying to do as a person is to be like Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ associated with prostitutes and liars and thieves and while he did not endorse what they were doing, he still didn’t hold his mission from them," Brazao said. "And my mission is one of love, peace and hope and I want to share that with others, even in the face of ridicule because that’s what Jesus Christ did.” Jesus even dined with sinners and Republicans! Let's not rehash the issue of the sister who refuses to perform, but some comments on this sister's thoughts might be appropriate. Edited January 7, 2017 by Bernard Gui 5

This kind of reasoning might help those who don't feel good about going to sing because of their opinion about the man Trump. But to label him a sinner might be considered a judgmental attitude to have. ("judge not that ye be not judged") The safer and most reasonable reason to go is that which was voiced by the church spokesperson.

I am pretty sure the way he bragged about his playboy past that suggesting he is a sinner is stating a fact and not making a judgement call. 5

("judge not that ye be not judged") I don't see her as labeling Trump or anyone else a sinner (though everyone has indeed sinned). I think she is speaking conceptually about showing love, charity and acceptance, even toward those of whose behavior one disapproves. Quote The safer and most reasonable reason to go is that which was voiced by the church spokesperson. I hate the term "spokesperson." If it's a man, call him a spokesman; if it's a woman, call her a spokeswoman. Or if gender is an issue, use "representative." (And no, it doesn't influence my thinking to know that Church Public Affairs sometimes uses the term "spokesperson." A lot of PR folk do. I still hate it.) 1

Obviously we aren't to condemn Trump but are we justifying his and his wife's salacious past? Are we losing moral high ground? Trump is not a moral man and doesn't seem repentant about it so why are we supporting him by singing to him or singing for a country that voted for him 1

Calm Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 (edited) "Mark 2:16 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?” 17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”" ---- The currently unrepentant are the ones that need help the most. If they aren't touched by the Spirit and their hearts softened, no glamour or power of this life will be hanging around them when they are consigned to hell. I think it is rather important we can say to God in that moment that, no, we were not ones who added to their burden of sin by rejection or mocking them, but we did our best to reach out. How wonderful would it be if an incoming administrative individual, obligated to be there and who would never have considered listening to a religious choir, felt the Spirit during the choir's presentation, pursued it, converted, and endeavored to appropriately apply their new understanding of Gospel principles to their government service. Regardless of that scenario playing out or not it is very likely good to have an opportunity to perform in front personnel (likewise obligated to be there) who are openly and/or secretly opposed to the Church. 4

His son just served his dad a golden opportunity to do that

This was during one of the presidential debates between him and Hillary. You are condemning the USA (and me) for voting for Trump. This reaction by the left is very astonishing. It reminds me of the extreme derangement we witnessed by the left against a previous president (by the name of George W. Bush who happened to be the very epitome of decency). No, I think the REAL reason is the left is scared to death that Trump will reform the government and restore Constitutional safeguards and undo the excesses of the previous administration.

HappyJackWagon Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 I am so offended that this choir member decided to grandstand and make a public statement about this. How dare she voice opposition to her former choir-mate and drag the choir further into an embarrassing public debate. It's just unconscionable. See how silly that is? Yet those things, and much worse, were said about Jan Chamberlin doing the same thing. Both people have an opinion. Both people are allowed to voice that opinion and neither are should be shamed or threatened because of it. 3
