Folllowing the success of it's recent smash global hit, Walt Disney Feature Animation announced today it's developing a sequel to it's wildly successful animated film based on it's first Nephite Princess!

Many fans noted that "Moana" didn't include a love interest, and today, the film's directors, Ron Clements and John Musker, shed some new light on the subject, saying,

"We felt we wanted to introduce families to Moana's Pacific-Island home and the seafaring aspects of her culture, as well as establishing herself in her own right, before introducing her potential love interest.

"With the success of the film, we're excited to share that Moana's story will continue in Moana 2: Journey to the Promise Land, where she'll finally meet her handsome prince, none-other than the famous ship-builder, Hagoth!"

The filmmakers included some early concept art for the upcoming film, seen below...

The directors also said they hope to collaborate closely with BYU Hawaii's 'Polynesian Cultural Center' in accurately crafting elements of the film.

The LDS church wasn't available for comment at the time of this release.

All kidding aside, if you haven't seen it yet, get out there and go see Moana.... It's phenomenal! ;)

And despite my lame attempt at humor, I smiled at how I caught myself thinking how many of the images of the film reminded me of elements of The Book of Mormon, The Testaments movie, etc.  Especially the headdresses, clothes, ships, and other artifacts depicted when showing Moana's sea-faring ancestors.  Funny how our culture influences how we can see the world!

This isn't the first time the Church colloborated with Disney, i'm thinking Fantasia, the Temple and the 1950s-60's

As an aside, I am watching a series on the SYFY channel. There are a couple of scenes with Mormon missionaries and there is a huge space ship being built by Mormons for a trip to colonize another planet. It is  played for comic relief. It is quite bloody .

Another interesting article about Moana that makes note of the influence of BYU Hawaii's "Polynesian Cultural Center" from SLATE Magazine can be found here:

Consider the Coconut: How Moana uses Polynesian culture to create a prototypical Disney story  (Please note, there are some pretty major spoilers for the film in the article, so don't read it unless you've seen it).

But it didn’t escape my notice that the support structure for native Hawaiian culture, and the broader Pacific Islander culture, was often commercial, linked to the tourist economy. I saw a lot of hip-swiveling Tahitian dances and warriorlike Samoan slap and fire knife dances—whenever my parents took a mainland visitor to a luau or to a Vegas-style dinner revue like the Magic of Polynesia. Many island tour packages include a visit to the Polynesian Cultural Center, a theme park on Oahu’s north shore, owned not by Disney but rather the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—another institution with deep pockets, inscrutable governance, and a fastidiously wholesome image.

Once you HAVE seen the film, I HIGHLY recommend reading this review... It also gives away very major plot spoilers, but reviews the impact and importance of Moana as a heroine that's fairly uncommon and unique, as well as a departure even from more recent 'spunky' princesses into a full-fledged heroine who's both a leader and a deliberate female savior of her people and others (albeit not in a religious sense)....
