SmileyMcGee Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 (edited) During the Saturday morning session of conference, Elder Snow was talking about the first publication of the lds hymn book and said that many of the hymns were pulled from "other Protestant faiths." I think many of our views and traditions were inherited from Protestant faiths, but I have never heard a member, let alone a GA, imply that the Church is Protestant. Have you? No, from all the reading I've been doing the LDS Church considers itself Christian, but not part of the traditional branches of Christianity (Protestant, Catholic, Orthodox). That is an interesting reference, but I'm sure he didn't mean to imply that The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a Protestant denomination. 3
Calm Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 We are considered usually Restorationists, not Protestant if one uses such categories. Perhaps what he meant was other faiths and these were Protestant. 3
rpn Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 from other, protestant faiths. (Maybe he forgot the comma.) 2

And we still have plenty of great Protestant hymns in our hymnal, along with at least one Roman Catholic hymn (by Cardinal Newman).
PeterPear Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 Protestant = Protestors from the Catholic Church. Nope.
sunstoned Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I doubt many protestants would consider the LDS church protestant. They were protesting some of the tenets of the Catholic church, hence the name.
JAHS Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 You can watch it again here: https://www.lds.org/general-conference/2016/04/media/session_1_talk_10/4828241453001?lang=eng At the one minute mark: "Many of them were hymns from other Protestant faiths". I think he probably did mean for there to be a pause between other and Protestant, but when reading off a teleprompter one might not put the right inflection on phrases. 1
SeekerB Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 When I was in Basic Training in the mid 70s, the Army considered LDS to be Protestants.

As a Catholic, I consider LDS among the more consistent of Protestants, taking Protestantism to a more logical conclusion ecclesiastically than Luther and Calvin. Mormonism is certainly more ecclesiastically consistent than all these community churches we have today which begin and end in a lifetime with one charismatic guy or gal. Non-restorationist Protestants are, strangely enough (from my perspective), too Catholic in many ways. Edited April 3, 2016 by 3DOP 1

There was a joke I saw in the old British LDS publication, called The Millennial Star, that existed before The Ensign replaced it back in the late 60's. It went like this: A member of the LDS Church applied for a job with a firm in Northern Ireland. One of the questions asked what religion the applicant espoused, but only two alternatives presented were Protestant and Catholic. The applicant left this blank, but when he went to hand it in, the clerk objected to the non-answer. The applicant answered "But I'm a Mormon, and that isn't one of the choices!" Whereupon the clerk asked, "Well, are you a Protestant Mormon or a Catholic Mormon?" !!!! 3

But that was probably because they were being sloppy with the trainees. Later I got the first set replaced with one that had LDS on it.

I joined the church while in the army, having been Catholic (nominally) before. I did have my dog tags changed. However, LDS chaplains (yes, they do exist) are Protestant chaplains. I was very good friends with one, who later became my bishop. He had to take his turn doing the Protestant services on base about once a month, and was trained in general Protestant rituals. I should also note that I had another very good friend who was Methodist and his tag said Methodist - you could choose to be specific. Things may have changed since then because I know now there are Muslim chaplains and there were not at that time, but in the early 1980s Mormons were Protestant in the eyes of the army (right way, wrong way, or army way!). 1

The Nehor Posted April 3, 2016 Posted April 3, 2016 I hope not. I find protests boring and do not want to have to go to them.

And then there are Christmas carols- don't know how to classify those! I also remember "Faith of our Fathers" with some different, some the same, lyrics
