JLHPROF Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 https://2paragraphs.com/2015/10/sister-wives-madison-brown-rejected-from-mormon-lds-church/ Just days after announcing her engagement, Madison tweeted: “After being rejected from the LDS church because the public association with my family was too much controversy for the Mormon Church. Anybody buying this? I can't see the Church denying someone baptism/membership because of their family, even this one.Honestly, I'm calling BS on this one.
bluebell Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) If it did happen then I don't agree with it. We aren't Scientology. People shouldn't have to give up association with their family to be baptized. Especially when the family is supportive. Edited October 12, 2015 by bluebell
filovirus Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 If I were to guess, she was probably interviewed directly from the mission president of her area. She probably would not give up some of her beliefs that are contrary to the Gospel. Unfortunately we will probably never hear the other side of the story. We will be left only guessing. 1
JulieM Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Sounds fishy and I find her version hard to believe. There has to be more to it.
JAHS Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 The question is. Is the program real or is it fiction? If it's real there must be more issues regarding her "rejection" by the church that we don't know about. Oh My! I guess we are just going to have to watch the show to find out. Can you say "Baiting the audience"? 1
bluebell Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I'll be watching it later. I'll report if it says anything. I don't know if the story line has caught up to that point yet though. She announced weeks ago she was engaged but it hasn't come up in the show yet.
Storm Rider Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 So a young lady is engaged to a devout Christian....let me just take a shot in the dark and guess he is an Evangelical, but let's assume he is just a run-of-the-mill Protestant. Has anyone ever heard of a Protestant soon-to-be spouse not be interested or to have no opinion about their future spouse becoming a member of the Mormon Church? I see this as being almost an impossibility. They are either going to jointly join the Church or there will at least be an opinion about the viability of the future couple attending different churches. Me thinks something sounds off on this. It just does not pass the smell test. 2
JAHS Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Notice the tweet at the bottom in which Madison says: "Caleb is a devout Christian and we are not a part, nor will we be, of the LDS (Mormon) church." Sounds like his disapproval had a lot to do with it also. 1

Tacenda Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 The church made a big mistake as far good PR moves, big mistake. They told her she can continue attending but couldn't be baptised because of her family's polygamy and it's being so public, something like that. Just watched her and she was very authentic. She said she can't join any church now. She believes in the LDS church, but since they don't want to baptize her she doesn't want any church now, but keeps her belief in the Saviour. She was glad she found out now how the church works. Of course she'll have negative thoughts of the church now, and run to the EV boyfriend and where she'll feel accepted. She doesn't want to live as a polygamist. Where else should she turn? The church surely missed the boat on this one, pretty much blew it on national TV.
Calm Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) You have something besides the woman's description to support that the Church did that?Do you think they should accept everyone who wants to be baptized? That they should accept people based on how much PR damage will occur if they don't? Edited October 12, 2015 by Calm

I am sure the producers and writers try to spice things up with a little manufactured controversy every now and then.

Calm Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 I could see someone brought up in one of the offshoots thinking the only difference between theirs and our faith that matters was plural marriage in the here and now. If she is herself choosing monogamy because that is what she wants and she hasn't stated she does not believe the others' claim to authority is false orsome such thing, I can see her baptism would be put on hold. There could be also confusion due towhat she thinks LDS share with her group, yet they don't. Church leadership is very careful when it comes to individuals who have grown up in plural communities. There is a special section in the handbook about getting clearances from the First Presidency.
Tacenda Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) This was a duplicate post, but since I've run out of posts I'll use it to my advantage. I see that I'm only seeing the show's side or Madison and her family's side. And need to wait to hear the church's side. ETA: Wow, just now read Kenngo's post below...he's answering this post without his even reading it. Edited October 12, 2015 by Tacenda

It's like I've always said: Large, well-established, decades-old companies employ public-affairs-savvy folks, but the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? It employs hacks and bumpkins. (Michael Otterson is Exhibit A, and his ignorance and unsophistication were put on display ... at a FAIRMormon Conference, of all places!) And of course, the producers of this show want to give the Church of Jesus Christ equal time, want to ensure that it can tell its side of the story fully (even though that would probably entail breaking confidentiality, but hey! This is must-see TV!), and aren't interested at all in painting the Church in a bad light. After all, most of their viewers love the Church and are waiting with 'bated breath, on pins and needles, on the edge of their seats, for the Church's side of the story! You're right, Tacenda! Rain2 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Obviously not as well known since she wasn't on a TV show, but there was a sister in one of my wards whose father was one of well known polygamists in Utah (don't remember which one). So no, the church doesn't keep people out for having a well known polygamous family. She is one I personally know. She definitely isn't the only one - you just have to go to the library, read a paper or watch the news. 2

Talk to people on reality shows and they will tell you of directors who urge the people to have disagreements, be more dramatic than normal, just do anything to keep viewers watching. I'm sure that happens more IRL when the characters are on for several seasons verses the people I've read who were only on one episode. We really don't have any idea what happened.
Calm Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 What are the instances that the church won't baptize someone? Which one is Madison's?Lack of belief in the Gospel or too much belief in other stuff. I would suspect if she still believes in some of the stuff she grew up with, it falls under belieiving too much in the wrong stuff...perhaps she thinks people should be allowed to marry plurally if they want?
Flyonthewall Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 Anyone who has or has had teenage kids, or been around teenagers(and it is not limited to teenagers, just more common) knows things can get lost in translation. Could asking her to disavow polygamy be turned into condeming her family? I can see it. 4
Tacenda Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 (edited) Obviously not as well known since she wasn't on a TV show, but there was a sister in one of my wards whose father was one of well known polygamists in Utah (don't remember which one). So no, the church doesn't keep people out for having a well known polygamous family. She is one I personally know. She definitely isn't the only one - you just have to go to the library, read a paper or watch the news. You're right, my niece on my husband's side married a man who joined the church and served a mission. He grew up in a polygamist family, and has parents who are still living it, even visited Short Creek as a child. How come he could be a member? It must be because Sister Wives is on TV. But why should that scare the church, especially when the church's purpose is as stated below. It's very disappointing if it's nothing on her part. “The great mission of the Church must always be to bring all men into a knowledge and acceptance of the truth. This is the cementing purpose of the Church.” John A. Widtsoe, Rational Theology, pg 122 “The whole purpose of the Church is to qualify individuals to return to the presence of God. ” Howard W. Hunter, Teachings of Howard W. Hunter, pg 218“…the purpose of the Church is to do something for people, to bring them happiness in this life and salvation and glory in the life to come. We might state it this way: The purpose of the Church is the purpose of the Gospel; the purpose of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is to help men achieve the very purpose of life. The purpose of life is joy through self-realization of our full nature as a child of God.” Lowell L. Bennion, Introduction to the Gospel, pg 209 “When all is said and done, there is one purpose for this Church, and that is to assist our Father in Heaven in bringing to pass the immortality and eternal life of His sons and daughters. The only reason for its being is to build faith in things that are eternal. So many times we get lost in the details of administration that we forget the spirit of the work. Gordon B. Hinckley, Berlin Germany Regional Conference, priesthood leadership session, June 15, 1996 as quoted in Teachings of Gordon B. Hinckley,” pg 117 “Longtime Mormons sense that although the central purpose of the Church is to help one another, they need to reach out and share the gospel through missionary work and exemplary service, and they also have a responsibility to establish eternal family ties. Through reviewing this threefold mission of the Church (Proclaim the Gospel, Perfect the Saints, Redeem the dead) we come to appreciate how united and loving dedication helps Christ’s kingdom on earth fulfill its special destiny.” Victor L. Ludlow, Principles and Practices of the Restored Gospel, pg 58 “This gospel in its purity, now restored to the earth, is intended to reach all of our Father’s children, and what a glorious thing it is to be permitted to participate in it! ‘This is my work and my glory-to bring to pass the immortality and eternal life of man’ (Moses 1:39). That is the whole purpose of the Church, the whole purpose of the program, the whole purpose of missionary service, and we are called to help carry that out.” Ezra Taft Benson, God, Family, Country, pp. 58-59 as quoted in Teachings of Ezra Taft Benson, page 177Some would say the overarching purpose of the Church is to: “invite all to come unto Christ, and be perfected in him.”(Moroni 10:32) Edited October 12, 2015 by Tacenda
Rain2 Posted October 12, 2015 Posted October 12, 2015 You may have missed it, but this sister's dad was well known. He was in the news (newspaper and TV) all over the place for awhile. Honestly, it just makes no sense to say the church wouldn't let her join because her family were on TV polygamists. 1
