Does this make three Apostles since last conference?

Yep.  Three need to be replaced, though there is no rule that I'm aware of that it needs to happen all at once, i.e., at the same Conference: President Packer, Elder Perry, and Elder Scott.  Rest in Peace, Gentlemen: Returned With Honor, Well Done. :)

Of course, I don't know what change there will be or if that will happen.

But yesterday someone posted on another forum (who claims to have inside information) that the 3 have already been "identified" and are younger (I thought, "of course, they're younger!").

Here's a quote from them:

"My sources tell me the 3 new ones have already been identified and are ready to go. I can't give names or reveal my source other than to say it won't be a surprise if you have your ear to the ground.  According to my source, the message and tone of general conference will be that of "whom the Lord calls, the Lord qualifies." Change is in the air and the intent is for the younger faction to push ahead much needed change and progressive thinking to retain the youth. This is a pivotal time in the modern history of the church."

With all due respect, I wouldn't trust that person's sources as far as I could throw them, if I were so inclined. :nea: <_<

Agreed. No one really knows anything about the process, let alone who is on any hypothetical short list. I was thinking this morning that it's likely that there will be an apostle called who was born in the 1960s, which would be a first, would it not?

Thanks for that. As I said earlier, it's sad that people want to take time at a man's death to spread unfounded rumors about him. I suppose it's human nature, but it's not right. I have no doubt he was a good man with a good heart.

I demand only founded rumors!

Oh, I agree.  It's just interesting to see the speculation that goes on when I have to believe this is all done with the utmost confidentiality and in the proper way.

Edited to add that I think I remember this same person posting that he works at the C.O.B. so maybe he's just repeating rumors that he's heard?

I think that's fairly safe to at least consider.  When this person predicted someone "younger", I had to smile though.  Younger than who? I think the youngest apostle now is David Bednar and he's 63, IIRC.  That's young to some :)

The one I spoke to you mean? Or the one whom the rumor is about?

The one I interviewed gave every indication he is active.

I guess I was conflating the two?! so his adopted son is gay and active? am I understanding this correctly?

Yes.

Wow, usually they choose for the President of the Secenty...that would mean most half...have they called anyone for the two who passed away earlier, or will they wait until Conference to announce all three in a couple of weeks?

In that event, he would be the first apostle in my lifetime to be younger than I.

Which wouldn't be too big of a crisis. I began to reconcile myself to the passage of time about 10 years ago when I went to Denny's while on a business trip and found to my shock that I was eligible to order off the senior menu.

All three of his living sons are adopted.

I have no knowledge as to whether any are gay; I've only seen that rumor here on this thread, in fact.

The only one of his five living children who is not adopted is his eldest child, a daughter.

Neither President Packer nor Elder Perry have been replaced yet.

I got my AARP invitation late last year. My wife asked me if it made me feel old, and I said that a man with 5 adult children should feel old. It would be weird not to.

he died exactly at the same time that Pope Francis arrived to the USA. Perhaps God wants Pope Francis to become the next apostle?

Elder Scott died at 1:45 p.m. MDT, about the same time that Pope Francis arrived.

AARP starts early. I thought I had gotten onto their list by mistake the first time I received a mailing from them.

Hopefully I didn't perpetuate the rumor, just wanted to clear it up and set the person straight on FB.  This board is my go- to board sometimes. Nothing in my googling brought it up either.

:D:rofl::D   Yep.  Of all of the things over which we can exercise little or no control, the simple passage of time has to be at the top of the list.  The minute we're born, we begin getting older, no matter what.

I wrote the following a few years ago:

Another day has come and gone; time is simply flying.

It goes and goes, and to slow it down, all I can do is keep trying.

I try as I can to keep yesterday straight from today and tomorrow,

And all the meanwhile, I'm just looking for time; looking for time to borrow.

But time cannot be sold nor bought nor begged nor borrowed nor any such thing,

For day by day, we trade our today for whatever tomorrow will bring.

"Was it a fair trade?" I ask myself as I drift off to sleep every night.

By the time I decide, tomorrow is here, and today has just vanished from sight.

The moral I've learned from the Sage Father Time is simply this, my dear friends:

Use what he gives you wisely and well, because, ere you know it, it ends.

P.S.: It was quite an eye-opener to me to find out, in my first year of law school, that one of my professors at the time was younger than I was.  We were discussing a certain case, and she wrote dates in a timeline involving the case, one of which was a date in September of 1972.  We discussed each of the milestones that occurred in the case, and that date seemed as though it should fit, but nobody could figure out what happened on that day in the case.  "It's a very important day," she insisted.  But still, no one could figure out why.  Finally, she said, "It's my birthday!"  It was pretty funny. :)

"intent is for the younger faction to push ahead much"

As soon as I see "faction" in reference to the 12, I'd throw out the source as bogus.

He served his mission in Uruguay and was a mission president in Argentina. So that accounts for the Spanish.

I can only assume he picked up Portuguese along the way in the course of his ministry due in part to its similarity to Spanish.

Well, now, Portuguese is to Spanish as Dutch is to German. I do speak German, and listening to Dutch-speakers can make my tongue get twisted up and my ears cry piteously. I listened to my grandson after his mission to Brazil bear his testimony in Portugeuse. It hardly sounded at all like Spanish. And I can do a bit of Spanish.

Wasn't there a story of how some President of the church advised a group of leaders to learn another language, and one of them was Elder Scott? And so he took the advice to heart? Or am I thinking of someone else?

37 years ago, President Kimball counseled leaders to learn Mandarin. And Elder Nelson and his wife wheeled into formation and did.

I've never taken seriously the prediction that within an arbitrarily chosen 40-year time frame, the law of chastity will be rescinded with respect to homosexual behavior.

But for those who are hoping/expecting that to happen, they might be eager to see whether one or more of the newly called apostles would be apt to bring that about when he ascends to the presidency of the Church -- which might be roughly within that 40 years.

Incidentally, the countdown clock on that prediction currently stands at 39 years, 4 months, 2 weeks, 3 days, 9 hours, 15 minutes and 54 seconds.

Yes, it's true that all of the five surviving Scott children except the eldest were adopted.

I'll have more about that in the story I'm writing from my interview this morning. I'll try to remember to post a link.

As promised, here is a link to my story, as it is now online.

Portuguese and Spanish are so close they can almost be considered a different dialect rather than a different language.

I learned Portuguese in Brazil and upon attending college in Utah began studying Spanish.

The University I attended did not offer any courses in Portuguese so I signed up for the upper division Spanish course regularly taken by returned missionaries.

Everyone in the class was fluent in Spanish and not a single word of English was spoken the entire semester. From day one I understood nearly everything, and by the end of the semester I had the highest grade in the class.

I dare say this would be nearly impossible for any other language pair, even Dutch and German.

I was privileged to hear Elder Scott speak twice in Portuguese in Brazil. The first time was not long after he began learning Portuguese. He spoke with a Spanish accent, but spoke well. A large portion of his talk was given in English with a Portuguese translator at his side.

The second time was a few years later at a large regional gathering. He gave nearly his entire talk in Portuguese, and was very well spoken. Towards the end he did use a translator when he was bearing his testimony.

What I remember the most about his talks was how funny he was. I recently read an interview with his son where he mentioned that most people didn't realize his dad had such a good sense of humor.

He managed to make us all laugh even in a foreign language, and that is not a feat easily accomplished.
