David O. Mckay And Speeding

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I have no intention of criticizing David O., he was a well liked president.  I have heard rumors of how he liked to speed in his auto and wondered if anyone has the accurate facts.  My brother used to live near someone in Layton who claimed to have been David O's driver and related that David liked to speed.  He would time himself driving from his home in Hyrum? above Ogden and see if he could break his fastest time.  When time came to buy a new Cadillac he wanted the biggest engine available.

Years ago I was telling someone about this and he said that he remembered that in conference David O. had apologized and said that he had been criticized by the brethren or someone and he wanted to make it right.  This is all second hand.  Does someone know more about it.  I think it's humorous.

I don't know if that was when David O. was president or before that time.

Edit to add:  This is not to be taken too serious or critical.

If this guy is claiming to have been Pres. McKay's driver then he would be guilty of speeding, not Pres. McKay or any other passengers

This website has some interesting stuff.  They say the story that David O. McKay liked Coca Cola is true.   :)

It was quoted in the book called "David O. McKay and the Rise of Modern Mormonism" page 23.

ETA - Comment deleted - misquoted.

And I love "holyfetch.com".

If David O. McKay did the Coke thing it was probably done in emulation of Joseph Smith who also preached a sermon on the Word of Wisdom and then smoked a cigar riding down mainstreet.

When you're a serious prophet all the time you have to make your own fun I guess.

Hey, they raised the speed limit in Utah on I-15, it was 85mph the last time I drove south out of STL.

yeah, but they drop it down to 60 in some spots for a few miles. lookout- they got me!!

It never fails to amaze me when people find out and try to prove that the leaders of the church are just human.  They put their pants on the same as each one of us does.  They were young men, got married, had children, taught lessons, sinned, and remain very human.

Exactly what is the deal to learn that they really are human?

Speculation that he was a secret polygamist was also in that book...not sure what that says about its reliability.

Wait...what?  I read it and don't remember that.

Relax, I think some people think it's a little humorous that a church president is trying to speed and acting like a youngster.

I confess that speeding is ( scratch that ) was one of my many sins. We have a lot of wide open country where the deer and the antelope play and I have seen the odd " impala " breaking triple digits. Speeding fines have recently nearly doubled here so I am grateful for cruise control which has dampened my impulse control.

I do remember the request by some for " the Lord to take us speedily to His Bosom " upon death .

Maybe speeding is in the Lord's methods .

I read that book, it is fascinating.  It really gives the details behind the scenes at church headquarters.  I think the author is/was LDS and he asked someone if he should just relate the history as he saw it and was told, yes, just give the truth.  But it's been many years since I've read it.  I recommend it to anyone.

Thanks Tacenda.

He was the prophet when I was a youngster, I'll always remember learning about him in Primary when I was 5.  My mom met him once and said she felt like he knew everything about her.  Isn't it interesting that many people say this when meeting a prophet?  Also, I've heard he really liked his clothes to look nice, remember his white suits?  And his beautiful white wavy hair.

I went to a dinner put on by Zion's bank when wifey worked for that bank and McKay set the next table over.  That's as close as I'll ever get to a Prophet.  Probably on top of the Hotel Utah, I don't remember.  But that's not too impressive I guess.

I worked for Zion's in the late seventies early eighties at their main office and 1st South office. And remember Zion's Bank's dinners.

That's where wifey work but that was around 1960 when they handled the checks and recorded them by hand and used ten key adding machines.  She often talked about that.  She went back in the spring of 1968 for a few months when the system had been upgraded.

My apologies - that speculation was actually in a Sunstone review of the book, not in the book itself.

I deleted my comment.

If President McKay ordered his driver to speed, he might be guilty of neglecting the safety of others and also encouraging someone else to break the law.  I drove the German autobahn recently, and in some places I'm allowed to go as fast as my car will go without breaking a law, but it doesn't make me blameless before God.

That said, I echo a previous poster's sentiment about acknowledging the humanity of our prophets. It's not testimony-shattering to me to know that they can be frail and sin.

Pepsi in a large cup of ice, with a straw.  And a little chocolatey something on the side.  While watching Star Trek.

President McKay's appreciation for cars was no secret.  My uncle was even a "car service" driver in Salt Lake City for a while in the 1960s, and he drove President McKay many times.  Interestingly, there were even a few times when President McKay expressed reticence that he couldn't drive around like he used to, so my uncle would let him drive the car (even wearing the driver's cap).  So of course, on one evening President McKay in a bit of whimsy tells my uncle to get in the back and President McKay will drive him!  He gets to be chauffered by the Prophet!  Well, sure enough on the I-15, President McKay is going to fast and gets pulled over by Utah's finest.  The patrolman asks the driver to roll down his window, and is just stunned to see the unmistakeable President McKay sitting there, smiling, and he gently asks "Is there a problem officer?"  So the officer goes back to his car and radios in and says "I've got a problem.  I just pulled over someone big."  The dispatcher asks who it is, and the officer replied "Actually I'm not sure, but President McKay is his driver!"

True story.

I've heard that story many times, applied in different ways and always have thought it was an old wives tale. Nice to know your uncle was part of it.
