The Second Coming Won't Happen In Our Lifetime

I really don't understand the fanatical claims this topic evokes from members. Ever since Christ was crucified the world has been awaiting his return and expecting it would be soon. Paul wrote about being present at the second coming. He hardly expected it would be 2000+ years. The early saints were also millenialists, expecting the 2nd coming was imminent in their lifetimes. Many patriarchal blessings promised individuals who have now been dead 100 years that they would live to see the 2nd coming. It didn't happen.

Big deal.

It could happen later today. It could happen within 10 or 100 or 2000 years. We don't know so there's no use being fanatical about preparations or getting upset with other if they don't believe the made up timeline we happen to ascribe to. It doesn't matter. We will all be judged one day after we die, which could happen today or in 10 years etc. We need to personally prepare in a prudent way but not in a fearful, fanatical, panicky kind of way.

The scriptures say that no one knows the hour in which he will return. I'm willing to take the scriptures at face value on this one because no one does know, although speculation would indicate otherwise.

Who knows when it will happen. Does not really matter on an individual level. I would be surprised if it happens within the next 100 years. I would be starting to worry if it did not happen within 300 years from now. Either way I'll be dead and life will go on. How's that for being optimistic!!

I've been thinking of the Second Coming lately and I've concluded that it won't happen in our lifetime, I predict another 100 years or more. Some prophecies are already being fulfilled though like wars and rumours of wars and earthquakes but the world is not fully ripe yet in my view - families are still the fundamental unit in society and people are still very much generally good - if it happened now it would be unfair (I think). The possibility for good is still so great and society is not so evil yet to warrant such mass destruction and loss of life. Also some prophecies allude to the joining of the continents and if that was to happen, I seriously doubt that it will happen within a hundred years or am I just too optimistic or naive to the evils out there?

Oh good, that means I have more time to sin before I have to repent...

(sarcasm folks, sarcasm...)

Just curious, is there something that teaches the LDS to stock up on ammo and guns?

No.  However if one lives in an area where it is possible and have the skills and physical ability to supplement the family food supply with hunting it is not a bad idea.

I personally like what Brigham said (although I can't find the quote). He said something about continuing to plant crops but keeping the wagon hitched and ready to go.

Personally, I'd rather be surprised when it doesn't happen than surprised when it does. I know which would require me to prepare myself.

Pres. Woodruff talked about how the second coming could happen soon, but he was still planting cherry trees.

For some, the Millennium has aready begun.: “When Satan is bound in a single home—when Satan is bound in a single life—the Millennium has already begun in that home, in that life” (The Teachings of Spencer W. Kimball, 172).

but sadly most LDS think it is a political hoax.

If humans create Artificial intelligence, humans will be smart enough to make it safe. If artificial intelligence becomes a reality, it will likely not have free will.

There is no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon. Mossad  (Israel Intelligence) stated "Iran at this stage is not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons, it is working to close gaps in areas that appear legitimate such as enrichment, reactors, which will reduce the time required to produce weapons from the time the instruction is actually given."

I don't think Iran is going to become a nuclear power in the near future, by the time Iran becomes a nuclear power the USA will create Artificial intelligence and a army of robots. The USA will certainly have a Hypersonic Weapon System (HWS) and a Airborne Laser anti-ballistic missile weapons system.

It is unlikely that aliens will attack us. If you travel to another planet and find living beings, will you attack them?

That is why NASA needs more funding, but senior people are more worried about Iran when the intelligence says there are not creating a weapon.

All it would take is a radical Islamic take over of Pakistan's  nukes .

God can easily bring to pass all those "major events" in a week if he wanted.

As for "height of wickedness", I hear this claim all the time.  Exactly what wickedness from the days of Noah isn't being done in some way today?  Really not sure what wickedness we are waiting on.

I think it has more to do with the widespread acceptance of evil, rather than the widespread existence of evil.  Including in that the widespread disbelief in God.  Both of these are relatively modern in comparison to past ages when it was kept pretty much under the table.

And in this theory, we are getting very close indeed.

Such a happy thought!

Second Coming predictions are fun but are largely pointless.

I know ... God's so ... stubborn ... that way! <_<

I would say the same thing about predictions that the Second Coming won't be soon.

Sorry, but your saying things like this are as bad as people saying that it WILL happen right away in our lifetimes.  I'm tired of it all and just grumpy about either getting too excited or too depressed with guessing.  I'm content to let alone what I do not know now, and I'm tired of speculation on either side of the guessing game.  I'll watch the signs, and die of old age or be twinkled.  I guess its all the same, because I'll be alive at the second coming either way.  Either mortal or resurrected.  The Lord will hopefully have use for me in whichever state he allows me to be in.

FWIW, this is the greatest talk on the second coming ever given:

The Glass is Half Full

I love this story:

My generation was not immune either from the effects of what I call Second-Coming fever. As young missionaries, some of us serving in the Italy Milan Mission speculated that 1974 would be a critical year—and possibly the very year of the Second Coming. We were highly imaginative as we wove together a tapestry of various bits of data, including the facts that the April annual general conference that year was to be the 144th annual conference of the Church and President Spencer W. Kimball, the twelfth president of the Church, would be sustained as prophet, seer, and revelator in a special solemn assembly to be held on April 6. What better day than this, a day filled with historical tradition and scripturally significant numbers such as 12 and 144, for the Lord to return to earth to begin His millennial reign? You may laugh, but we took our wild speculation very seriously. Of course that historic and spiritually uplifting conference has come and gone, and we are still here. (See CR, April 1974, or Ensign, May 1974.)

Even today I encounter scores of people who believe they will witness the Second Coming in their lifetime. For my part, I am now somewhat reserved and wiser. I teach my students these guiding principles: prepare a will, buy life insurance, put funds away in a retirement program, and, if they really want to be nice to their family, purchase a pre-need funeral program that includes a cemetery plot! For many of my students, this last bit of advice is a little morbid, but it makes my point. Live today as if you will meet Jesus this evening, but plan your life as though you will live to be 100 years old.

Yeah, I looked for that to post here. A dose of sanity and hope. Doomsday preppers hate this kind of stuff.

The Lord's second coming really has nothing to do with preparing.  To become converted to preparation just watch a little world news

If one has a functioning food storage program(I don't) you can live aprox. 15% more economically than if you don't.  You are always eating at last years costs.

I wish more people were converted to the idea that food storage is to feed you and your family and those less fortunate or prepared around you in the even of a disaster and not to be hoarded in your bunker while you pick off starving marauding hordes with your sniper rifle.

I don't get my info from partisan news, I get it from the intelligence report, but you are so convinced about your own beliefs, you can't be wrong.

You get your information from a classified intelligence report? Do tell...

Related to this is the fact that Second Coming promises in patriarchal blessings go unfulfilled sometimes where people just die.  So I have to wonder why the Lord allows those kinds of things to be said in the first place.  If it is just to be fulfilled in the resurrection, which is the only option left in those cases, then why even make a promise at all?

Mr Kettle I certainly could be wrong but it has been awhile since I was.
