The Second Coming Won't Happen In Our Lifetime

And you base that on what?  Dead reckoning?

Matthew 24: 32 Now learn a parable of the afig tree; When his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh:

33 So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that ait is near, even at the bdoors.
34 Verily I say unto you, This ageneration shall not pass, till all these bthings be cfulfilled.

I can't believe this was actually taught in GD, just yesterday!  Yes, maybe in the time of JS when that's all they were thinking about nearly, I'm dumbfounded.  What about the youth?  Now they're going to get it from their parents.  Some young adults, (my nephew by marriage), thinks we have maybe 5 years at best before the world ends.  He isn't pursuing his life's dreams in the same way now.  Whoever put forth that we need to pray for the 2nd coming, is way off base.  That lesson, was perhaps overlooked by the leaders of the church, or if it was ok'd then the leaders are off base.  I know one leader, Boyd K. Packer, that would disagree.  And like I said in another post, it's cultish, IMO.  If we are praying for the Second Coming, aren't we stunting our growth?  Are we concerned with the earth?  Are we concerned about our future?  Or are we trying to bring about the Second Coming by living a law based religion?  Are we leaving it in the hands of the Lord?  What should we do, start a 3rd world war? That might bump it up, set off nuclear attacks?  This is so upsetting to me.

I don't get this. Christ's return is a good thing. Why would it be bad to pray for it?

2Nephi 8:  11 Therefore, the aredeemed of the Lord shall breturn, and come with csinging unto Zion; and everlasting joy and holiness shall be upon their heads; and they shall obtain gladness and joy; sorrow and dmourning shall flee away.

2Nephi 12: 2 And it shall come to pass in the last days, awhen the bmountain of the Lord’s chouse shall be established in the top of the dmountains, and shall be exalted above the hills, and all nations shall flow unto it.

3 And many apeople shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the bmountain of the Lord, to the chouse of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will dwalk in his paths; for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.

I believe it well happen in my lifetime. If I live as old as my father who is now 95 I believe I will see the coming of the Lord in the flesh. I am still counting on the date I speculated on a few years ago 2020 but it could be longer but not 100 years longer! Either way we should watch and be ready.

Is there anything like this in the Bible? Also this is where my nephew is getting the idea perhaps. He is preparing..he has guns, food stuff, equipment etc., I'm sure he read Julie Rowe's book. So it's ok that he puts his energy into this? I might be exaggerating, I hope. My thought process is that we will bring about the end through wars, or lack of care for the planet. Does that mean I'm an Atheist? I don't have a lot of trust in men's words in the BoM or Bible, but do believe in a Supreme being. Also, still it seems every man for himself in these preparations. Is there anything like this in the Bible?

2 Nephi 8 - comes from Isaiah 51-52

2 Nephi 12 - comes from Isaiah 2

So yes, this is Biblical as well as being in the Book of Mormon.

(Perhaps this thread should be moved to the other forum?)

Preparedness isn't just for disaster at least not if you look at provident living and the things shared in conference. It is also preparing for the future - getting your education etc. It is preparing yourself spiritually. It is preparing yourself socially - to be able to work with people in all walks of life. It is preparing as a family - strengthening family bonds. Preparing financially - both short term and long term.

Preparing ourselves against disaster is short sighted. Preparing ourselves to meet the Lord means nit only being ready for emergencies, but changing our hearts and developing talents and gaining knowledge so we can be more like Him.

Trust in the Lord and do good, that is Psalms 37:3

Isaiah 2:   2 And it shall come to pass in the alast days, that the bmountain of the Lord’s chouse shall be destablished in the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills; and all enations shall flow unto it.

3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us ago up to the bmountain of the Lord, to the chouse of the God of Jacob; and he will dteach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of eZion shall go forth the flaw, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem.
4 And he shall ajudge among the nations, and shall rebuke many people: and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears intopruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn bwar any more.
5 O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us awalk in the blight of the Lord.

Somebody has been watching too many Zombie movies. If one is familiar with the typical survivalist, if that is the type of person who remains after society has imploded, may the Lord have mercy.

I hesitate to point this out, but Bangladesh has been drowning since I was a lad. 50 million people died in the 1918 flu epidemic. Wars in the 20th century have claimed a couple of hundred million lives. Today we get apoplectic when a few dozen people succumb to Ebola. Polar bears have survived much warmer climates. More people die every year from car accidents than did in most recent wars.

Please, let's see the larger picture. As has been said, prepare yourself to meet Christ for it will happen to us all sometime in our life. Buy insurance.

It ok to pray for the Second Coming, but not say when it's going to happen, like saying it's in our children's lifetimes. I am fearful somewhat of it happening. It just doesn't seem like it'll be the same, like no opposition. How will we feel joy if we don't feel sorrow? Too many things to list.

I taught the second coming in Gospel Principles last week. I wasn't real excited about it since I also taught it last year. This year though while studying I finally caught onto the idea that the calamities that happen before the second coming are NOT the second coming. I think we get in that mindset because they are always taught together. It becomes cause and effect in our minds.

I think you are so right.  I also was one of those people who confused the events or signs of the second coming (or leading up to it anyway) with the actual second coming.  As if Jesus's return was what was going to make everything fall to pieces.

In reality though, as you said, everything is going to be falling to pieces, and Jesus's return is going to be what fixes it.

How will we feel joy in Heaven?  There is no sorrow there.

We will know joy having experienced sorrow.

Are you only happy now when you also have sad things happening around you? Or does the painful times being in the past, getting a respite from the suffering make the joy of the moment even sweeter?

We will not have forgotten our mortal existence and what sorrow was for us in heaven, but like the rest of mortal disabilities through God's love we will have been able to put it aside.

I don't see any issue with this state of joy starting in the confines of any truly Zion society, assuming the usual pains of mortality are relieved through healing and other acts of faith and God's blessings.

Kind of crazy huh. I guess fear of the unknown. And maybe not having my family with me. My mom's friend would constantly say how bad she wanted the Second Coming, she suffered so much with plantars warts, I think, and it was painful for her to walk. She lost a lot of weight so the pressure wouldn't be so bad. So I can see how if you are promised a renewed body, that would be something, and the thought of being in the presence of Deity and passed on loved ones, for sure!!

What is nice about family is that you can include as many as you want in your own, they don't have to have blood ties. You can just choose to love them.

Not that such stops you from missing others who you have loved, but you need not be afraid of being alone and unloved or without family ever if you are capable of reaching out with love yourself (and being patient at times in finding others willing to do the same, but I don't think that will still be an issue after Christ comes and takes charge).

I agree.  Why else do we have the very early Christian prayer and Aramaic liturgical phrase, Maranatha "Oh Lord, Come!" (I Corinthians 16:22, Revelation 22:20)

.............................................................

This is another very important and early Christian liturgical phrase in Greek: Kyrie eleison "Lord have mercy!"

You can hear it in Gregorian chant, here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3ETFI2U9RA .

Mr Mister also put out a wonderful rock version of it at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=belrNpqqA2g .

That almost convinces me to lay aside some grudges I harbor about our previous dealings with one another here on the Board. ;)

I think it's problematic either to say, “Stock up on food, clothing, supplies, fuel, ammo, and guns, because it's 'at the doors,'” on the one hand, or to say, on the other, “Meh! Won't happen in my lifetime, or my children's. See Matthew 24:48, 3 Nephi 29:2.

Just curious, is there something that teaches the LDS to stock up on ammo and guns?

1. global warming, resulting in

     (a) major flooding of low-lying areas of the planet, including Holland and Bangladesh, in which large populations exist now.

     (b) major drought in large areas over long periods, killing plant, animal, and human life

© lack of snow pack and glaciers in major mountain chains (Himalayas, Rockies, etc.) resulting in dry rivers, mass death, and war

but sadly most LDS think it is a political hoax.

2. computers smarter than humans, which will take over the planet within 15 years, and exterminate useless humans

If humans create Artificial intelligence, humans will be smart enough to make it safe. If artificial intelligence becomes a reality, it will likely not have free will.

3. terrorists obtain weapons of mass destruction (biological and atomic weapons) and use them

There is no evidence that Iran is building a nuclear weapon. Mossad  (Israel Intelligence) stated "Iran at this stage is not performing the activity necessary to produce weapons, it is working to close gaps in areas that appear legitimate such as enrichment, reactors, which will reduce the time required to produce weapons from the time the instruction is actually given."

I don't think Iran is going to become a nuclear power in the near future, by the time Iran becomes a nuclear power the USA will create Artificial intelligence and a army of robots. The USA will certainly have a Hypersonic Weapon System (HWS) and a Airborne Laser anti-ballistic missile weapons system.

4. alien invasion of planet

It is unlikely that aliens will attack us. If you travel to another planet and find living beings, will you attack them?

5. large asteroid collision with Earth

That is why NASA needs more funding, but senior people are more worried about Iran when the intelligence says there are not creating a weapon.

I personally like what Brigham said (although I can't find the quote).  He said something about continuing to plant crops but keeping the wagon hitched and ready to go.

Personally, I'd rather be surprised when it doesn't happen than surprised when it does.  I know which would require me to prepare myself.
