When Did Jesus Receive The Aaronic And Melchizedek Priesthood?

Recommended Posts

Today in order to receive the priesthood there are certain basic requirements

1.  Have a physical body of flesh and bones (i.e. being born)

2.  Baptism

3.  Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost

When did Jesus receive the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthood?

1.  When he was an "intelligence"  (prior to his birth to Heavenly Mother)

2.  As a spirit child (after his birth to Heavenly Mother but before his physical birth)

3.  After his physical birth to Mary

Perhaps Christ held the Power of the priesthood without being ordained to an office. Similar to women.

Nice try. :good:  But as the teacher in my marriage/family class last year taught, "women are inherently more spiritual and righteous than men." "Even more than Christ?" I wanted to ask ....  but I miraculous lost my ability to breathe/speak when my wife anticipated my comment and stiffly elbowed me in the ribs. It's not the first time, and probably not the last, that the spirit has prompted her to save my bacon. She's well worth the rib I paid for her.

That sounds like unrighteous dominion.

When do you think Jesus received his Priesthood?

The source of power and authority does not receive it, he gives it.  The priesthood is "after the order of the son of God".  Our priesthood lineage goes back to Jesus Christ, period.  He is the "beginning".

I'm frequently amazed that so many LDS Church members will hastily answer questions such as these without consulting the scriptures.

Jesus was made a High Priest by God the Father, because no man -- including Christ -- can take the honor of holding the priesthood unto himself. And so we read:

And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that iscalled of God, as was Aaron.

5 So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he (the Father) that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. (Hebrews 5)

Also, Christ didn't have to be specifically ordained into the Aaronic Priesthood because the duties and authority of the Aaronic priesthood are subsumed within the power and authority of the Melchizedek Priesthood. As Joseph Smith himself said, "all priesthood is Melchizedek."

He began teaching at age 12. It's possible that He received it then. Another alternative is His forty days of fasting after His baptism.

those are my best guesses. Of course we don't have alot of info on it yet.

In Hebrews we read:

"And no man taketh this honour unto himself, but he that is called of God, as was Aaron.

So also Christ glorified not himself to be made an high priest; but he that said unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee.

As he saith also in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.

And being made perfect, he became the author of eternal salvation unto all them that obey him; Called of God an high priest after the order of Melchisedec." (Heb 5:4-6, 9-10)

According to Joseph Smith, before the world was created, Jesus Christ, the great Jehovah and firstborn of God the Father in the spirit world, covenanted to use the power he had obtained from the Father to implement God's program for the eternal happiness of all God's children (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 190)

So it appears from this and the Hebrews scripture, that Jesus received His priesthood authority from God the Father, which, according to Joseph Smith has "existed with God from eternity, and will to eternity, without beginning of days or end of years,…holding the keys of power and blessings." (TPJS, pp. 157, 322)

For us, Christ Himself is therefore the source of all true priesthood authority and power on this earth, having received it from His Father.

The Priesthood is his. The full name makes that clear. Everyone else gets it from him. He does not need ordination. He ordains.

To make what you imply explicit, it is The Holy Priesthood After the Order of the Son of God.  (Doctrine & Covenants 107:3).

Haven't read through the responses yet, but the thread title and OP remind me of the accusations and demands of the scribes and Pharisees that the Master tell them by what authority He acted.

Pogi put it well; I'll just add some emphasis: He is the Authority.

I see you beat me to it.  Props.  But I provided a reference. :)

Since when do you need a body, baptism, or the Holy Ghost to be ordained to the priesthood?

The Priesthood being the power and authority to act for God, the line of the Priesthood extending to Jesus, He didn't need an ordination to it.

Is God the Father's priesthood "after the order of the son of God" or does he have a different priesthood?

Since Jesus is God and the priesthood is simply an authority to act for him then I guess Jesus doesn't need the priesthood.  Is that a fair assessment of what you are saying?

Ask Jehovah- he knows.

Oh wait

He IS Jehovah.

So answer your own question.  How did God get his authority?  Who does he think he is anyway?  God?    ;)

So I take it that your position is that Jesus has always held the Priesthood--which means before his spiritual birth to Heavenly Mother (i.e. as an "intelligence")

Jesus received His authority from God the Father.

Jesus is the authorized representative of the Father to us.

Therefore, the source of the priesthood man receives is Jesus Himself.

It was by the power of the priesthood that all things were made.
