Last Movie You Watched

I haven't seen it.  I usually don't watch rated R movies but will make exceptions for things that I believe serve a greater good and that I can learn from.  War is ugly, and it's a part of our world, so i don't have a problem watching war movies when they try to be true to life and not gratuitous.

 

So i'll probably see it when it comes to On Demand. 

 

It always amazes me what people will take their children to.  It would be interesting to see what their reasoning skills were.

Saw American Sniper. Real war. Be warned lots of 4 letter words but it was part of who these guys were. Showed the emotional toll this takes on soldiers.

But the young people in my industry have learned from Hollywood, or from somewhere, to use the F word in every sentence, without any reference to what the F word originally meant. We did fire a guy recently because customers complained that he was always swearing and he had been suspended for swearing at the customers already. There is no wit. Not amusing. Not anything except filthy, foul, ugly, stupid ways of trying to communicate.

Raingirl...amazing...from law firms (you and supposedly smart people) to trucking (me and supposedly "less than smart" people)...it isn't that it is filthy only...but it is cheap. It shows such a lack of vocabulary. Such a lack of wit. Nowadays, we can't seem to express ourselves with emphasis unless it is with filth. Whatever happened to words that could show strength without being dirty?

I've noticed younger people use such language more and more and I think it is partly from the influence of movies, music, etc. 

I started noticing it while still working at San Fran State Univ...  now it's even more prevalent...

 

One of my favorites to watch is To Kill A Mockingbird... among several others... I never get tired of them...

A friend gave my husband and I tickets to the Sundance Film Festival going on in Utah right now, to see the film, "A Walk in the Woods" with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. It was a movie about author Bill Bryson's journey of walking the Appalachian Trail with he and an old friend. It wasn't at all what I thought it would be, since going in I'd never heard of the book or guy. The funny things they did, along with the dangers that came their way. It got somewhat raunchy in parts, Nick's part, but such a good movie overall.

I've been under the weather with a bad cold... and I'm hoping it doesn't turn into anything more serious... so I've been stuck in the house for three days... So I snuggled down and have watched a couple of my favorite movies... today I watched "Sense and Sensibility" starring Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson... I love the story first of all... and then when I watch a movie I like to be able to notice the background... the location... the clothes... the furnishings, etc etc., and S&S is wonderful in that it is filmed in the English Countryside (perhaps it is Ireland, but I think English).  So green and beautiful with the fields divided by hedgerows.  Then the estates are really wonderful with huge 1800's multi-story homes, the walls filled with paintings, large fireplaces, period furniture, etc etc.  Truly a visual treat.

I tried reading the book out loud once to my wife and couldn't make it through. I didn't like it. Years ago. I didn't like the characters. Maybe we'll have to try again. It is a favorite movie now for us too. I love the uncomfortable scenes. "F major"? How about when Emma realizes the understandable mistake she had made about Mr. Faros? He is free! Delightful in all the ways you mention too...Great taste GG as always! I sure hope you feel better.

I watched Prometheus (it was on t.v.) the other day.  It's a very well made movie and it draws you right in with a very interesting story, but like the Alien movies the body count is very high and even with the t.v. editing it was plenty gross.  Plus, not a lot of it made sense.  It needed more explanation and was unsatisfying in that it brings up a bunch of questions and you don't hardly any answers.  

 

It's dark and depressing, and like i said, a bit frustrating.  The kind of film you think about for a few days afterwards but not in a good way.

Isn't there supposed to be a sequel that provides some answers at least?

I think so. I think it's tenetively scheduled for 2016.

Prometheus is actually a prequel to the Alien films (though not necessarily of that story). I like it because I like that type of space movie. It definitely needs a sequel.

Saw Warm Bodies last night and walked out of the theater with a big smile on my face. That sounds corny and I know parts of this review may sound corny, but I kinda loved this movie: the acting was spot-on (Nicholas Hoult and especially Rob Corddry were both terrific), the premise was fresh and clever, and the story has equal amounts of tongue-in-cheek humor and mostly perfectly executed (though sometimes sappy) romance that make it worth a watch. And what's more is that this is a romantic comedy that's actually both heartwarming and genuinely funny, which is a rare find these days. I'd even say it's hilarious. The smart, almost satirical humor had me laughing out loud several times. Oh yeah, and Theresa Palmer is gorgeous.

Seriously, though, go find a date and watch this movie. Best film of the year so far. I know that's not saying much but it's better than a lot of movies that came out last year too.

When I heard what it was about I had absolutely no interest in it. Just none. The rest of the family felt the same way except for my teenage son. Then we all went to a movie together and saw the trailer. That sparked our interest enough that we saw it. We liked it enough that we have seen it several times since and that is something because I rarely like seeing movies more than once.

It seems to be my dirty little secret though because the whole concept is just so not me (zombies) that I am a little embarrassed to recommend it. Yet any time I hear about it again I start thinking about seeing it again.

I'm with that faction of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that's on the "wrong" side of history with respect to same-sex marriage.  (I think there are differences between that issue and racial equality, but I certainly don't want to turn this into the Board's 50,500,250,125,062,500th same-sex marriage thread ... ... especially not here in Social Hall) ... Given what some of the Brethren at the time said about the Civil Rights Movement, as much as I'd like to think I would've been on the "right" side of history with regard to it, I do wonder ...

 

And, while I suppose sufficient conflict has to be at the heart of any good drama (and whatever other disagreements I might've had with President Johnson, because I do lean conservative), I don't particularly like how the movie rewrote history by making President Johnson much more reticent to support voting rights and civil rights legislation than he actually was.

I put aside my aversion to the language... in fact under the circumstances of men and war, it didn't seem gratuitous.  We here in this country have no concept of war in our streets and cities... too often we forget to stop and think about how fortunate we have been and are... I can't say too much here because it could quickly turn political. 

At Church, my friend's son is a sniper who has received numerous commendations for his service... his nickname is Stormin' Mormon... there's a person who used to post on this board with that as a screen name and at first I thought it might be the same person, but it was/is not. 

Anyway, the movie is worth seeing...

A friend that had heard I went to the movie, called to ask if she should go, her husband wanted to see it. I told her I went despite hearing about the extreme use of the f-bomb in it, and told her I must be desensitization because in this movie I barely remember that many, it may be because of doing as you said. When speaking to her afterwards she wasn't too excited about the movie because of the language,and probably looked at it differently than we did. It made me feel even better now that you said it's a good movie.

The other day. I read a post on FB from a guy that refuses to watch it until he can watch on his Clear Play, a device that takes the swearing out. I think it might not play that well with this movie. Oh and another reason I thought it'd be good to go is because Glenn Beck was taking his teenaged daughter so I thought it can't be that bad.
