Grudunza Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Watched Mr. Peabody and Sherman again last night with my girls and enjoyed it even more the second time. Sadly, I think this movie kind of flew under the radar for many, but I think it's one of the few Dreamworks animated films that can compare in quality to Pixar. Very entertaining with smartly absurd humor and excellent animation throughout.

The good Mrs. said go ahead, she has to pack....will leave after Mass tomorrow...We haven't been to the beach in a real long time. I have a surprise Monday off. Hoping to walk on the beach with my dearest before sundown at the "bar" of the D River. (Garden Girl's neighborhood). Anyway...its me and a weight watchers ice cream and a cup of coffee and Bobby Fischer (searching) tonight. Great new movie especially if you like good old movies. . 1

Hello 3DOP...Oh I hope you have a wonderful time...(Oh-oh... it may be raining and windy). In that case I hope you stay somewhere that has a fireplace and you can watch the waves and sit by the fire. There's something magical about the beach... I see it all the time. Couples, young and old, seem to hold hands almost without exception as they walk on the beach or window shop, etc. One caution however... don't forget about our "sneaker" waves if you walk along the shore. Always keep your eye on the ocean. It can look fairly calm with the waves rolling in as "normal"... then all of a sudden a larger, stronger wave will come in... one that can knock you off your feet as it goes high up onto the shore. And you may be familiar with the caution about never... never... standing or sitting on a log that is in the water along the shore. You've heard the term water logged... well the logs may look stable but they can roll in just a couple of inches of water even though they weigh a ton. Sadly, every now and then, in spite of posted warnings, someone plays on the logs and gets injured or killed when the log rolls, they fall off, and the log can roll onto them. Visitors forget that the beaches of the Pacific Northwest are not like beaches in Calif, Hawaii, etc. And our water is too cold for actual swimming... no more than just wading a little...Be safe... enjoy... with just a little caution you can have a wonderful time... Garden Girl Posted November 17, 2014 Posted November 17, 2014 I just watch the ending of "My Darling Clementine" ... a terrific movie I've seen before, starring Henry Fonda (as Wyatt Earp), Ward Bond (one of the Earp brothers), Victor Mature (as Doc Holladay). I say it is a terrific movie because it is... but it is totally false...Takes place in Tombstone, Arizona and ends with the gunfight at the OK Corral... in this and other movies that tell the OK Corral story, the gunfight is always depicted as this long, drawn out fight, ending with the death of Doc Holladay. I've been to Tombstone, and to the OK Corral, to the museum and read the news accounts, and also to the Crystal Palace saloon where Wyatt played poker. The "gunfight" lasted all of about 30 seconds... all those involved did come to the Corral... but they stood in close proximity to each other and simply drew their guns and started shooting at each other. It ended when most of the participants were dead... except Wyatt and Doc and a couple of others. I forget where Doc ended up (Colorado I believe) where he died of TB, which he had suffered from for a number of years.Wyatt ended up having a colorful life in Calif and other places... was a sports caster/writer, a detective, hobnobbed with some of the Hollywood elites, etc. So while "My Darling Clementine" was very entertaining... it was just that, entertaining... certainly not based on fact. And remember a General Conference or Christmas Devotional where one of the GA's or one of the First Presidency mentioned it being a wonderful movie. Back when I thought they probably rarely watched a movie, because of there not being many that were very appropiate, I sort of put them on a different plane than everyone else.

There have been other Wyatt Earp movies that were somewhat more truthful. Gunfights were rarely more than a few seconds long and this business of 2 opponents standing a block away from each other is silly. They were close and dirty. Firing a pistol from the hip with accuracy at a target over 50 feet away is quite difficult. In Hollywood only the good guys can do it. The bad guys, even with machine guns , are lousy shots. 2
Garden Girl Posted November 18, 2014 Posted November 18, 2014 (edited) I just watched one of my favorite "lawyer" movies -- The Rainmaker... starring a very young Matt Damon from I think 1997. He plays a lawyer right out of law school, who gets involved with a colorful, questionable, ambulance chasing lawyer and his partner (Danny DeVito). Matt takes on this case of an low-income family suing a big insurance company. Danny Glover plays the judge who is bemused by the naive Matt, but sympaththetic at the same time. A really terrific film.Another favorite is "The Verdict" starring Paul Newman as a boozy has-been lawyer taking on a big hospital in a wrongful death suit.Of course the lawyer of all lawyers is Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird... We watched that for the first time with our family this weekend as well. We enjoyed it! I don't know how it would hold up under repeat viewings, and the thought, "Wo unto them who call evil good and good evil," came to mind more than once, but definitely enjoyable. I particularly liked the film's definition of true love.

Pleasantly surprised, but I still love the original voice so very much more....that was so very perfect in dripping sarcasm...Beautiful sets, scenery, graphics, whatever you call it...I think I would be happy watching it with just music and no live actors. Garden Girl Posted November 21, 2014 Posted November 21, 2014 I rented two movies today... 1) And So It Goes... starring Diane Keaton and Michael Douglas... a delightful comedy in the same vein as When Harry Met Sally and You've Got Mail. Directed by Rob Reiner... Very good. 2) The Giver... starring Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep... and some young actors I can't remember their names. I wasn't familiar with this story, but apparently it's been around for many years, and was also a children's book/story. A Sci-Fi story about a future world after the earth was free of war, stress, envy, crime or love... because everyone became alike... for instance no one stood out from anyone else because that might arouse feelings of envy or jealousy, etc etc. Very good story... Last night we watched Jack the Giant Killer and the night before Maleficent. She loved Maleficent. We like sci fi and fantasy and end of the world movies. I grew up with love of such things when I read my first sci-fi book "When Worlds Collide." They made a movie of the book but it wasn't that good. I would love to see a movie today of that book and it's sequel "After Worlds Collide" With special effects today it could be so spectacular.

But a word of warning-it is a difficult movie to watch if you have a baby. The movie pulls no punches and there are still two scenes that I am struggling to deal with.

I really liked the 3 seasons of Sherlock Holmes on the Beeb. You know, the one with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock. Did I already mention that Guardians of the Galaxy was totally awesome -- against all my expectations?

It was a mixed bag... but overall a good movie... some of the special effects are awesome, like the "rock people." People who expect any biblical accuracy will be somewhat disappointed... but a good story in spite of that... GG

Garden Girl Posted November 29, 2014 Posted November 29, 2014 During this Thanksgiving weekend, I'm getting a couple of the premium channels for free, so I've enjoyed a couple of movies (surprising how many that are available that I care to watch)... anyway, one of my favorites came on... Baby Boom, starring Diane Keaton and Sam Shepherd... a wonderful comedy about a "tiger lady" (Keaton) of the advertising/marketing world of Madison Ave/New York.When an accident takes the life of a distant relative and his wife, she "inherits" their two year old daughter, Elizabeth, who turns Keaton's life upside down... the rest is pure delight... GG
