Mahoneymoriancumer Posted October 27, 2014 Posted October 27, 2014 My kids wanted to see a scary movie this weekend for Halloween, so I gave Son of Frankenstein a spin. It stars Basil Rathbone and Bela Lugosi, and is the second sequel to the Boris Karloff Frankenstein, after Bride of Frankenstein. Outstanding set design and great framing, pretty over dramatic, but my four year old and seven year old liked it!
Mahoneymoriancumer Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 One more- does anyone remember The Changeling with George C. Scott? It's a ghost story/mystery, came out in 1980. It gave me goosebumps, and I don't scare easily.
bluebell Posted October 28, 2014 Posted October 28, 2014 I watched "The Way Way Back" this morning and loved it.

seriously honestly Posted October 29, 2014 Posted October 29, 2014 Oh Tacenda...my sister and I just watched all three episodes of season 5 yesterday, and I'm pretty sure my heart is still bleeding slowly from how many times that show ripped it out and stitched it back together again.

It gave me goosebumps, and I don't scare easily. That was a big one when I was a teenager! Along with your Christopher Reeve avatar!! Maybe you remember this one, this was one when I was possibly a pre-teen. I think it was called "I Know Who You Are and Saw What You Did". These girls would prank call people's homes and say that. But it just so happens the guy they call, really did do something bad, maybe murder someone, and somehow he tracks them down and they are all alone having a sleepover I think. Just wondering if this rings a bell for anyone.

Just wondering if this rings a bell for anyone. I remember that one... but don't remember seeing it... the one I do remember is one where this girl is babysitting and the kids are in bed asleep upstairs, and the phone rings and this man's creepy voice asks "Have you checked the children?" she goes to the bottom of the stairs and stops and listens... all is quiet... so she goes back to the living room... A few minutes later the phone rings..."Have you checked the children?" I may be mixing this one up with another one, but IIRC she reports the calls to the police and they say they'll check it out. Finally the police call back and tell her the calls are coming from inside the house and she should get out fast... I don't remember how that happened, or what happened next...All I know is that today, I cannot stand to watch a scary movie... I just can't. The kind with the phone calls or unseen menace scare me more than those with bloody action... GG
Tacenda Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 I watched "The Way Way Back" this morning and loved it. Me too!!
Deborah Posted October 30, 2014 Posted October 30, 2014 Big Walking Dead fan. I love how it presents issues of morality and sacrifice and how the characters have changed over what they have experienced. It also shows that humans can be scarier than the monsters.

I vaguely remember... and recall it was a good film. GG

I vaguely remember... and recall it was a good film. GG That's the one! I didn't see it when it originally came out, I was 5 at the time, thank goodness Mom and Dad kept it out of reach. I hadn't seen it in about 15 years, but remembered it a couple of weeks ago and picked it up on Amazon. Serious goosebumps! Tacenda, I've never seen I Know Who You Are and What You Did, but I'll be looking for it now.
Garden Girl Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I watched "Capote" starring Phillip Seymour Hoffman... what an actor he was... in his role as Truman Capote he fully captured the voice and mannerisms of Capote... This movie centers on the case of the 1959 murder of the four members of the Clutter family in their rural Kansas farmhouse... Capote went on to write about the case and the two young perpretators in his book "In Cold Blood." One of the men, Hickok, was a cell mate with a person who had worked for the Clutters, and who told Hickok that the Clutters had a safe in the house where they kept large amounts of cash until they could get to the bank. So Hickok got a friend, Perry Smith, and the two of them went to the Clutters in Nov 1959 where they kept asking about the safe... Mr. Clutter told them there was no safe (and there wasn't) and it finally ended with the murder of the family (the parents, and their teenage son and daughter).I remember this case well because it was in all of the newspapers and I remember reading about it... I was 18 at the time. It was shocking because things like that were rare... not like today... There was another movie made about the case and it was titled "In Cold Blood" (after Capote's book) and starred Robert Blake as Perry Smith... GG
bluebell Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 I watched Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter last night after recording it off the tv a few days ago. It was dumb. So very dumb. The history it teaches was atrocious, which could have been over looked if the actual plot and special effects hadn't have been so horrible as well. I can't believe it got two stars.

I read the book, and rather enjoyed it, except for the ending. It was the same author who wrote Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, which I thought was a brilliant satire and very fun, especially for a fan of the original Pride and Prejudice like myself. I have to agree with you on the movie. At the point where they were battling on horseback, literally, I think I audibly said, "Really?!"

I have to agree with you on the movie. At the point where they were battling on horseback, literally, I think I audibly said, "Really?!"Yes! The horseback thing!!My 12 year old son walked in at that part and asked us why we were watching a cartoon. That's a special effects fail if there ever was one. I could see how the book is probably better (did they make Lincoln a life long abolitionist in it though, that drove me nuts about the movie as well! Lincoln didn't care about freeing the slaves, he just wanted to keep the country from tearing itself apart over the issue. Hello people!).
Mahoneymoriancumer Posted October 31, 2014 Posted October 31, 2014 It's been a couple of years since I read it, but if I recall correctly, Lincoln is considered an abolitionist from early adulthood in the book, but because the slave trade is being used to provide vampires with food, not because of the degradation of man. The book moves with good pacing, but seemed very hurried toward the end, which was my biggest complaint.
Deborah Posted November 1, 2014 Posted November 1, 2014 I enjoyed ALVH as a fun alternate take on history. Yes, some impossible scenes. My daughter however didn't like how Lincoln was portrayed, lol.
halconero Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Interstellar. Great visuals, moving score by Zimmerman, and an enjoyable plot..
Deborah Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 I want to go see Interstellar but I can't sit 3 hours without rushing to the bathroom! Also Michael Medved said it was a disappointment. But I still want to see.
Silhouette Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 The Mummy with Boris Karloff, presented by Svengoolie. A wonderful black and white classic! 1
Grudunza Posted November 9, 2014 Posted November 9, 2014 Big Hero 6. Enjoyed it. Got some mediocre reviews, but I thought it was quite entertaining. Makers of Wreck-it Ralph and Frozen... won't compare to either of those, but still solid.
Deborah Posted November 10, 2014 Posted November 10, 2014 I re-watched "Maleficent." Love that movie. Angelina Jolie is perfect in the role and plays the emotional swings so well.

I'm going to be purchasing it to add to my collection of faves.
Mahoneymoriancumer Posted November 11, 2014 Posted November 11, 2014 My wife and I re-watched It Happened One Night this weekend, with Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. I always love that movie, although my wife doesn't like the way Grant treats Colbert before falling in love with her. It's the original spoiled princess falls in love with a gruff commoner flick. I also am working my way through the extended edition of The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug. All of the Lord of the Rings moves are great, but take me several days to get through, since I don't have 4 hours at a time to sit and watch.
Garden Girl Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Because of the comments here, yesterday I rented "Maleficent" and was thoroughly delighted... I did one of my favorite things... after being out and about running errands, etc., stopping at the store to pick up a few items... We have a kiosk for movie rentals ($1.20) which stocks all the latest movies as soon as they are available to rent, usually within a couple weeks of their theatre run... and they also carry a few "oldies." Anyway, so I rented the movie, went home, got into my jammies, fed the Beast, and then settled down to watch... and it was very enjoyable. I agree about Jolie's performance. GG
