I just watched "Captain America: The Winter Soldier"... well, I thought I'd give it a try because someone on here said it  was a great action movie... it certainly had a lot of action!  I usually do not watch such films because I really don't care for all the crashing, flashing, wham bam... I found the story hard to follow, i.e., who were the good guys vs the bad guys.  It wasn't until about half way through that I really understood the plot, etc.

People who like lots of action, who are used to playing action games on their tech items or computer will like this film I'm sure.  I say it will be a long time before I watch another such film... but that's just me.  Old woman that I am...

I think the struggle with any of the Marvel movies if one hasn't seen most of them is that they are building upon one another.  It saves a lot of time from a point of exposition, allowing the viewer to get right into the plot, but it does create a lot of holes if you haven't seen what came before.  Probably my favorite moment in Winter Soldier was the conversation at the bedside with Captain America and Peggy, the old woman.  If you haven't seen the first film, or the Avengers, for that matter, you'd have no idea that this was a great unrequited love story, that this was Cap's long lost love, and that he was still trying to find a way for a 1940's guy to live in the 21st century.  Without knowledge of the other films, however, you just get a nice young man talking to a nice older woman.

The movie "Guardians of the Galaxy" is a Marvel movie, and that has held me back despite seeing the high ratings.  I keep holding off until I take my grandsons.  I wonder if that movie is good despite that it's a Marvel.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a good movie, period. It's a sci-fi adventure, not a superhero movie, and you don't need to have read the comics it's based on or seen any previous Marvel movie to understand this one. It's a very funny and heartfelt movie, one of 2014's best.

I did understand that part... but have no idea what happened to him that he was still young and she old...

The serum that was given to him in the first movie allowed him to survive being frozen in ice all those years, which kept him from aging. That's the explanation given in The Avengers.

I do enjoy them, don't know why I feel the need to only go with my grandsons. I guess my husband and I have been to these types w/o them before. Just thought some are geared toward the younger aged kids. But apparently that's not always so.

Guardians of the Galaxy is a movie kids can enjoy, but there's a bit more language and innuendo than in previous Marvel movies. So be aware of that.

It helps to have seen the first one. It definitely is a sequel. My wife really liked the movie. It is quit the action film. I thought the story line was awesome too, and it was really quit a twist to me.

I think though, for the year, my favorite movie was Marvel's other production. I really like Guardians of the Galaxy. I really like the movie overall. It was just a good flick. I think I was thinking it was going to be dumb, so I was really surprised at how good it was.

Marvel is Money right, they produce nothing that sucks.

On another note I watch The Hobbit and Tron. Both are in 3D, I have to say that the new Hobbit films are really quit nice. I really like the picture quality of the Hobbit. In fact it is almost hard to watch the Lord of the Rings movies. It is amazing what a 11 year spread does in technology. And the 3D is really well done. Tron was Shot with the 3D cameras so it looks really good.

I guess the Hobbit was shot with some nice Red Epic Cameras, not really familiar with them, but they sounds impressive and they used some interesting ideas to get the 3D. Any good times.

I should rephrase that, despite the usual intended audience. I guess in my head I think of super hero action figures etc. And have to admit I'm not a huge Sci-fi moviegoer. But liked "The Giver" and a few others. Edited by Tacenda

Gone with the wind the book is WAY better than the movie!!

(Though I love both. :D )

I read the book when I was in high school and have probably read it 5 or 6 times since then.

I agree about Wuthering Heights though. I read that a few years ago and I still have no idea what is supposed to be so awesome about it.

I am sure my "private authority" only read it (GWTW) once. Deference to you. I am glad you approve of the movie. I like it a lot too. What a huge production. Those flaming words going across the screen with that unforgettable music theme. Shoot. They predispose you to love it before a word is spoken! I remember when they used to show it on TV once a year. Maybe they used two nights. The Ten Commandments the same way. Nothing like these days when we can watch virtually anything we want anytime.

Have you seen Wuthering, the movie? Good scenery. The wind. The heather. The moors. M. Oberon is rather lovely, and I suppose a young Olivier isn't the worst scenery for you gals. A very young David Niven doesn't stand a real chance. I ought to review the movie again. Its been twenty years or more. I liked it then, but as I already admitted, the book just didn't work for me.

I saw Atlas Shrugged 3. The best of all the movies but it would have been nice if they had kept the the same actors through the whole series. Of course the book is one of my favorites, read multiple times. What they need is a tV miniseries that can cover the expanse of the book,.

That's interesting that you would say the "best of them".  The reviewer Michael Medved was not very kind to it at all.  He gave it one star and said to honor the memory of Ayn Rand by not seeing it.

I have enjoyed all of the Marvel movies, to one degree or another, but Guardians was the absolute best of them. Tastes vary, but I suspect you will enjoy it.

I always find things out late, and I had not known that Benedict Cumberbatch (the voice of Smaug the dragon in The Hobbit, and Khan in rebooted Star Trek 2) was Sherlock Holmes (to Martin Freeman's Dr. Watson) in the now 4-season long BBC Sherlock.  I saw some clips on YouTube and really liked them (it's updated to modern day with cell phones, etc) -- then I discovered I could buy episodes or full seasons on YouTube!!  So I got seasons 1 and 2.  These things are movie-length, by the way, and there are only three episodes per season, but they are really good!

Best show going right now, in many ways; writing, directing, acting. Only three seasons, though, of three episodes each. But yes, each of them is movie length, and very dense. I rewatched them all three times now, and still appreciate them.

Godzilla.

Cheesy as the old ones, but then I liked the old cheesy ones. Special Effects are good. Turn off your brain, and enjoy the ride. ^_^

I'm glad to hear it wasn't just me!  I got my 4 year old addicted to the old Godzilla movies.  What struck me about the new one is how much it follows the pattern of the classic Toho films; a teaser of the monster near the beginning, followed by a big bad enemy, and Godzilla showing up toward the end to save the day.

I really like the first season, not so much the other two.

I think it's gotten better and better (though I didn't care too much for the Hound of the Baskervilles episode from season 2).

If you haven't seen the first Captain you really don't understand the relationship between the Captain and the Winter Soldier. I loved the first one and enjoyed the second one also and in fact have the DVD to watch again.

Guardians was very entertaining and fun and I went by myself.

I think I'll go see The Giver today. I've hesitated because I've heard so many mixed reviews. I also want to go see The Maze Runner but I'll wait another week to avoid the crowds.

Currently I'm watching the TV series Veronica Mars. Love the wit and the characters. On season 3. Then I need to watch the movie again because I had forgotten some of the characters.
